Gameplay Nivalis Nights' gameplay loop is structured very similarly to Stardew Valley: each day you have a limited amount of time (measured in realtime, paused in conversations and menus) to accomplish whatever tasks you decide you want to do, which will involve making money by running your business(es) and/or completing quests. The primary difference here is that, instead of a hard "bedtime" at the end of the day, there's a curfew that you can either choose to abide by or not. If you don't, the game suddenly changes into a stealth game and you can get up to whatever sort of hijinks you can figure out how to accomplish in whatever zone you're in, as long as you can dodge the security cameras. You are eventually forced to go to bed somewhere to end the day, but otherwise the night is yours to do with as you wish. Oh, and you're drowning in debt and potentially being hunted by a seemingly untraceable serial killer while being constantly pressured to keep growing your business empire. Woohoo! Even beyond that stuff (ostensibly the main questline), the game has what seems like a neverending firehose of stories to tell every day, so many in fact that I have found it nearly impossible to chase them all down and just prioritize the ones that I can get to as I get to them. I have yet to scratch the surface of this game, and I already understand how deep this rabbit hole goes. There are so many layers here that can be engaged with and so much time that you can spend drenched in the environment, and the scary part is that you can spend so much time in just the first few zones that you may not even find enough time to go exploring for quite a while. And here's where my few criticisms will start to come in. The pacing of the game seems brutally fast. I never feel as if I have nearly enough time in a given day to do even a few things of note in a zone that isn't one of the starter zones without having pre-mapped a route to a sleeping room in my head (which is a nightmare in some of the zones... screw you, Docks). This is especially painful when you explore a new zone for the first time and don't necessarily know where those sleeping rooms are right away. Also, the AI for your employees is kinda terribad at the moment. Pay them well, give them but one job to do so they do it with smiles on their faces, make sure they're not overworked so they go home happy... and still they wipe a countertop right next to a dirty ramen bowl. Managers seem especially bad at their jobs as any time I visit Ramen Noir I inevitably have both a "Restock" alert and my dumb Manager sitting there patiently waiting for me to take care of the problem when I arrive. Last but definitely NOT least (for me personally, but YMMV here), placing objects on the ground doesn't have any sort of grid snapping, which means sweet baby jeebus help you if you pick something up and need to put it back and want it to line up again. SIGH. BUT... having said all of that, the game is still an absolute delight to play. The gameplay loop, while stressful at times (just like Stardew, for me at least), has so much character and vibe to it that I just find myself thinking about which stories and goals I'm looking forward to chasing after next. From Cloudpunk to Nivalis Nights Stylistically, the DNA the two games share is undeniable from the jump, and I won't lie, I found myself grinning a bit when the first HOVA cutscene hit and I got that nostalgia rush from my time in Cloudpunk. Much ado was made in advance about the lack of HOVA driving in Nivalis Nights since it was such an undeniably key part of what made Cloudpunk great, but after having played NN for a bit now, I can honestly say I do not miss my old HOVA in the slightest. First of all, I don't have time to get good at driving a HOVA these days, people... I have a ramen stall to run, a serial killer to find and/or avoid, CorpSec to appease, and a Manager that can't figure out how to buy enough ramen noodles to keep things running the way I like them. Who's got time to race HOVAs these days?! Besides, there's a replacement mechanic: a boat you get to sail around for fishing and exploration purposes. You can fish up your own ingredients for the restaurant, find lost treasures, and go places you can't get to any other way. Cool, huh? The music is just as good as the first game, maybe better. The voice acting? Eh... some of it is pretty great, some of it seems a little iffy. So far there hasn't been an iconic voice that's stuck out to me the way Rania, Camus, Huxley, and Control did for me in the first game. The writing is good, though, so generally I don't mind so much, and what's there is passable enough. I have a personal conspiracy theory about how NN is structured compared to Cloudpunk. I read quite a few reviews of Cloudpunk that essentially boiled down to "great vibes, just not a lot to do" and I think the devs took that criticism to heart and overcompensated a bit: there's almost too much to do here. I sometimes have to just catch my breath and sit in a menu for a second to let my brain recalibrate to what I need to do next in the limited amount of time I have remaining today, and that could not be more opposite from the vibes of Cloudpunk where visiting your apartment was almost entirely optional and time was rarely an issue. Conclusion So, do you like being immersed in cyberpunk vibes while playing Stardew Valley (and sometimes a stealth game)? Stardew kinda stressed me out when I played it multiplayer with my friends, but this game, while undeniably stressful at times (stupid MANAGERS!), is just so delightfully immersive and full of charm and story that it feels like a rabbit hole I want to keep going down. It's not perfect, not yet, but neither was Cloudpunk, and I still loved it, and they're still updating this one. Nivalis Nights brings that same voxel immersion Cloudpunk introduced us to into a more dynamic sim environment and gives me SO much more to do that it feels like I'm doing the game an injustice by not doing it all at once. Solid recommend, especially at the price point. These are the kinds of games that should get brighter lights shined on them. (edited to fix grammatical mistakes and to clarify a point in the Cloudpunk comparison section)

update a week after launch: theres been 3 fix updates now, and the games performance has improved a lot! I get a little under double what I did on launch day. so averaging about 100 in general, or 40-50ish when looking at crowded areas now. still not perfect but theyve done a lot of work to make it better -------------- this is one of the coolest games ive ever seen but the performance is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ MISERABLE they need to optimize this game so bad how do I get worse frames on this than cyberpunk2077 at psycho RT

God I love this game but it needs work. 1) It throws way too much at you at the beginning - start the noodle cafe, talk to 3000 npcs, which tell you to talk to 3000 more. All that while time is running every day and u have to keep the cafe stocked. 2) Something's wrong with "happiness indicator" of the customers. No matter how fast I serve the dish - they are always unhappy, but can still leave a 4-5* review. 3) Staff. This is a big one. They are slow af. Picking up one plate as a waiter is laughable. Don't get me started on managers...Further on them below. 4) Managers/Restocking: Managers need to prioritize what you're growing in the greenhouses. This needs to be somehow automated. I'm on day 20 with 4 businesses and those mf are sucking my pockets dry. I physically can't restock everything possible myself in the morning and they can apparently only buy stuff from vendors. What's the point of growing smth then? I want to be able to automate the venues and have time for story/fishing/discovering. 5) Optimization. Frames drop constantly in different areas or during specific actions like cleaning or farming. It drops to 30-40 sometimes on my RTX 5080 and it's frustrating. 6) For me personally I would love to have more detailed statistics. What customers with to change about the venue? What dishes are popular in which areas. What f managers spend my money on. etc. On a good note. Love the vibe, love the graphics, the ambience. Story...could be better, but that's not why I play this game so for me it's enough.

I wanted to update my review to let others know, in the time the game has been out the devs have put out 2 patches already and it runs perfectly, they've also noted some additional bug fixes they're aware of and working on. It's clear the team cares about the game. It's been such a blast getting to know this city and the characters in it. I usually pay attention to reviews but for some reason having waited for this game for so long I went ahead and tried it. I had a feeling the reviews were exaggerating and I was right. Yes, there are some frame drops here and there in very crowded areas, but it is by no means "unplayable." Anyway, I'm glad I ignored those reviews, and well if your system looks anything like mine, I'm sure you'll be able to enjoy it. I'm looking forward to the time I will spend with this game

Contra: - No active HOVA control - No familiar characters like Rania or Camus :-( - apparently performance issues with some rigs (mine runs the game maxed out smoothly) Pro: - Cyberpunk! Let me tell you, THIS IS IT! Dirty, vast, solitude, Neon lights, endless rails, rain ... always this soothing rain - Live simulation. The city districts breathe, everything moves, people carry their crosses and you find a way to interact at every corner. - Run your own restaurant (hey, this is always fun anyway) - Escape your boring reallife, feal the Saudade, breathe in the dirt, obey to corporate oppression, dive into the future, dream of electric sheep This game was long awaited and though it has issues and glitches it's a gem already, a star on the digital gaming firmament. If you love flying cars, if you crave Cyberpunk, if you fell for Blade Runner and Vangelis you definitely need to give Nivalis Nights a chance.
