Complex, difficult and addictive. Unlike other tower defense games, NORDHOLD truly allows for a variety of different strategies. It encourages experimentation. My best game so far in regular mode was wave 37 which I managed to repeat multiple times. But even after 100 hours I did not get any further than that, unfortunately. I don't have time to hang around Youtube or Discord to learn intricate M.E.T.A. tactics, so maybe in the future I might find builds on my own which work better. The only downside of the game is that it does not guide or help players in trying to improve. Statistics are only available after the monsters broke into your city.

One of the best tower defense games I have ever played. As I have gotten older I have found myself spending more time looking at games rather than playing them. My wishlist is full of random things I think I would possibly like but rarely do I ever purchase them. Occasionally a steam sale will get me to pull the trigger and buy one and I often spend a couple hours playtesting the game only to never pursue it again. Games just don't really "capture" me like they used to. I find myself playing Slay the Spire with the occasional playthrough of Kenshi or Stellaris. Fall of 2024 I stumbled upon the free preview version of Nordhold and it was a blast! I was cautiously optimistic when the full version launched that the full product would be as balanced and polished as the demo- and it is! I am delighted to say that I have finally found a game that "captures" me again. I think about it when I am not playing it- constantly trying out new strategies and combinations. The game has a near perfect blend of consistency, randomness, tactics, meta progression, and difficulty curve that I am having a hard time putting it down. There are a few minor balance tweaks that I think could improve the game but I find myself having so much fun from playthrough to playthrough that none of that matters. I actually enjoy the game well enough that I would recommend it even for its full price (and I am a cheapskate). If you like tower defense games and/or the roguelite genre, I would whole heartedly recommend Nordhold.

Excellent tower defense. It's base difficulty is quite hard so that's where the negative reviews come from. Also big tip, you CAN build towers on squares that don't have a number/height modifier on them. Don't know why I didn't try that for so long, but I'm positive I'm not the only one and ignoring that really limits your ability to burst down some later enemies. The most unique part of this game is how well it does "economy" or "macro" like in a traditional RTS. The beginning of the game you have so many different things you can invest in, making those choices are the funnest part of the run imo and add so much depth. After that a significant part of how late you get is based on the map you draft. A nice double back in particular completely transforms the run, but you have to adapt to what you have which is neat. Towers and "banners" aren't perfectly balanced, but arguably they shouldn't be. It is a little odd though considering how well balanced the economy/macro side is.

I should have recommended this far before now. It's very good. Todays major update brings a prettier look and feel and I'm absolutely loving this game and the updates. I love a game that allows me to pause, take a smoke break and ponder the choices before me. This game does this perfectly. Do yourself a favor and check it out. Even if you aren't a tower defense person 'like me'. (I'm now a tower defense person).

A Tower Defense Gem with Brains, Banners, and Just a Hint of Chaos Score: 8.5/10 Let me start by saying this game is a standout in the tower defense genre. From the first run, it’s clear the devs aimed above industry standard—and hit their mark. At first glance, you might feel overwhelmed by the sheer number of options thrown your way. But stick with it. That feeling of “too much” quickly turns into “wait… do I actually need more?” It’s a clever sleight of hand that unfolds as you play a few rounds and begin to see the real depth under the hood. The complexity is spot-on. It’s deep without being a doctoral thesis. The way towers interact—both individually and through the banner system—is where the real magic happens. There’s synergy here, and not the corporate meeting kind. Real, satisfying synergy that makes you feel smart when things click and humble when they don’t. Map layouts change each run, which keeps things fresh and forces you to adapt. Every map feels like a new puzzle with its own rhythm and set of challenges. You’ll find yourself planning early game placements while also plotting late-game doomsday setups—and grinning like a maniac when they work. Then there’s the town building, outposts, and spell system. Sounds like a lot, right? On paper, sure. But in practice? It’s the perfect amount of extra—like icing on an already-good cake. It adds just enough strategic flavor without turning the whole thing into spreadsheet simulator 9000. Unlocking buildings through honor points is actually a genius move. It paces the content in a way that feels rewarding and earned, especially around the 15-hour mark, when you start to appreciate the slow-drip design. If I had to throw a dart at something, it’d be the economy system. Now don’t get me wrong—I want it to be complex. I’m not asking for a coloring book here. But the way economic choices are presented sometimes feels... vague. You’ll make a decision that seems good in the moment, only to realize 20 minutes later that you accidentally sabotaged your own run. That’s not complexity; that’s sneak-attack regret. A little more clarity or feedback in this area would go a long way. Despite that gripe, this game is a home run. The replayability is phenomenal. Leaderboards give you that little endorphin boost as you compare your strategy to the community’s best (or worst, no shame). And I love that it gives you a clear goal—beat the game in a set number of rounds—but also encourages you to push further and really test yourself for that extra payoff. In short: smart design, great pacing, satisfying depth, and just enough room for chaos to make each run feel different. This one’s a keeper.
