Good game, heaps of replay value, dev's are inactive but it can also run with mods via manual installation or a mod manager (I use Thunderstore). The mods greatly improve quality of life; I would suggest getting; - Speed controls: Pause, 2x and 3x speed - Refund Upgrades: if you upgraded a tower accidentally or want to get the money back you can. - Better Pause Menu: Pause and quick restart. - Banish Cards: Remove certain cards from being drawn again if they are showing up and ruining you runs plans. - Fixed First Split: First lane split happens at lvl 20 to give you a more solid build prior to the chaos. - Dark Mode: Changes the background from bright white to dark, essentially night mode. - QoL Changes: Tower Range circles/squares on hover, Default Tower Settings, Priority Coloring of Towers, Copy Tower Settings (to new towers of the same type), Copy/Paste Tower Settings, Display Tower Range in Build Mode. I play this when I have the tv going or just wanna chill an play something easy going and at my own pace. Also it has 140 achievements which is wild for the achievement hunters. Solid 7.8 / 10
It is lacking in some features. "save and quit" being one I would love... However I do come back to this game fairly often while I'm on the phone or something. Since I'm not frantically placing towers the entire time. I just accept some rounds I'll lose because that's how the cards rolled or it's my build idk. I would love to see another from this developer with again some more features and options.
From a game design perspective this is the best tower defense game I have played so far. You get a variety of towers to pick from - some are really basic and can be found in any TD game while others are unique to Rogue Tower only. You have to unlock them one after another though, so the game doesn't overwhelm you with too much at once which is good I think. It my not look like it at first but the mechanics offer A LOT of depth and possibilities. You get elevations with range and attack bonuses, Mana which can be gained and spent in different ways, three different "health" types in enemies, several ways to gain gold which is your only resource to buy and upgrade towers and more including random and progressive map generation, random enemy units, bosses, etc. So its not like other TD games where you can basically follow one simple strategy per map which will work every single time but you have to adapt to the always changing situations. The achievements are exceptionally hard but personally this is what I look for in games. The hardest achievement (not rarest though) which I recently got after trying for many many hours involves a lot of luck. I don't know if this is a good thing or not since it can get frustrating. But if you want to go after that you have to invest a ton of hours and bring plenty of patience. The only things which really bugged me (not counting the luck factor) are two things. 1) You can't rotate the map. Some tiles are inaccessible sometimes to build on because they are blocked by other taller tiles. 2) The graphics could really use some more love. I guess the current state is fine considering one person developed the game (I think) but a well designed game like this deserves better graphics. Initially I thought the pricing was a bit high after watching the videos showcasing the poor graphics but as of now my money was totally worth it and there is always a sale around the corner ;) I can only highly recommend playing this if you like Tower Defense.
