Normal Golf Game is mechanically brilliant from start to finish. The whole game is designed around managing separate parts of your golf game simultaneously, including your swing, stance, aim and even the orientation of your club’s face. At the same time, you must account for factors like the wind, trees, and the shape of the course itself. Your club’s face needs constant correction as it will perpetually drift in somewhat of a hilarious fashion. While maintaining its alignment you must also ensure that your swing makes good contact with the ball or you run the risk of botching your shot. All the pieces have to come together just like in regular golf, and the payoff is a fantastic feeling swing. The design of this game is nothing short of genius and while I felt like the importance of stance, foot position, and swing follow through are not fully explored, it manages to capture the essence of being an amateur golfer. The challenge and reward of golf is what makes it so compelling and that is what Normal Golf Game understands. There is a significant learning curve, I fear many may bounce off the game, but I urge you to stick with it because there is so much to enjoy when you get into the swing of things. The plot is simple and intriguing, your money is taken, your car is incinerated, and you are compelled to do one thing and one thing only, golf. This whole situation has been engineered by a mysterious man who constantly monitors you for some unknown reason. There is real charm to the opening of the game, unfortunately the writing did not elevate the central premise to anything spectacular beyond that. I usually do not mind when characters are not voiced, but in this case, it really is a shame that your abductor does not have one. Normal Golf Game has an excellent design but does not flesh out a lot of its ancillary elements. The scope of the game is quite small. The entirety of the game takes place on one 9-hole golf course. Most of what you will be doing is completing challenges, not outright golfing. I would have loved more courses, more joy of exploration, but the game is also incredibly cheap at 10 dollars and with gameplay this good I do not feel slighted by the narrow scope at all. Unfortunately, I am also not in love with the aesthetic. It has a retro feel to it with ugly copy and pasted trees, simple textures, and a lack of creativity. This is all clearly by design, but the fact remains that I just did not enjoy looking at Normal Golf Game as much as I wanted to. As you are stuck in one location the entire game it would have been a great benefit for more visual diversity. The gameplay loop is so addicting this game could easily have been evergreen, but I fear that many will grow bored of the standard looking course. However, for all of its flaws you will still get many hours out of Normal Golf Game because it includes many "bounties" which are often eccentric challenges that are designed to force players to engage with every element of their golf game. Some of my favorite bounties include making crazy curved shots into doorways, hitting balls onto narrow islands or greens, or sinking consecutive putts. To reach the “final boss” you only have to do a fraction of these challenges, but I was constantly detouring from the “main quest” which mostly has you collecting the five different clubs and learning how to use them. Every aspect of these bounties seems designed to encourage players to fully understand the games mechanics and create a constant sense of improvement and achievement. At no point during my time with Normal Golf Game did I not deeply enjoy swinging my golf club over and over. You can hit a golf ball practically everywhere and at anything. I was consistently challenged and found immense joy in elevating separate parts of my game so that I could go continuously through all nine holes with minimal errors. There is an irreverence to the plot which is pleasant if not expounded upon in interesting ways. It would be a real shame if this game does not receive an update or two with more courses and a multiplayer component because it is so well engineered and dedicated to capturing what a fight it is to learn how to golf. The title Normal Golf Game is obviously meant to be sarcastic, but it ends up being incredibly fitting. This is the most golf feeling golf game I have ever played, and for all the craziness of its challenges it nails the simple feeling of hitting an exhilarating shot.

Actually my favorite golf game of all time. After hundreds of hours in 2K im basically a god in that game even on the hardest settings. This game is more like golfing irl, i can hit great shots and with enough tries i can beat most challenges but stringing together consistent shots is super tough, this is perfect imo, hitting a pure shot feels so incredibly rewarding. My hope is endless amounts of dlc courses, challenges, and multi-player because i'll happily play this forever.
