A decade on, Nuclear Throne still prompts an interesting philosophical question: is it rage-quitting if the only time you ever quit is in a rage? It's a masterclass in lean, cruel arcade design from Vlambeer, a studio so committed to difficulty they apparently refused to budget for adding i-frames. Here, in this wasteland, everything hurts. While its contemporaries reward tactics and planning around RNG, Nuclear Throne demands you become an aggressive hose of bullets, rapidly oscillating between patience and "blow up everything on screen" panic. The game isn't unfair, but it is exceptionally easy to be unlucky. Taking damage means swift deletion, often before you have any chance to react. A slippery enemy, a stray bullet, your own astoundingly stupid grenade ricochet - all immediate run-killers that will leave you staring at the death screen wondering how it all went wrong so quickly. The creative direction and presentation still shines, with sharp pixel art and a soundtrack of crunchy guitar riffs with drifter-Western atmosphere that perfectly suits this irradiated hellscape. It's the kind of music that stays with you between runs, which is greatly appreciated given how many runs you'll be making. With the recent Update 100, four-player co-op and a 13th playable character have been added. To do this 8 years on from the last update shows commendable devotion to a world that is always fun to revisit. Nuclear Throne is a dangerous classic that tastes like a rat kebab marinated in tears, cooked to perfection on the Elephant's Foot. If you're tired of survivor-likes and want a short, punchy arcade-style roguelike that values aggression over dignity, you can't go wrong with this deserved indie darling. You will resent this world and everything in it, but you will still want more.

Damn! A content update in THIS day and age?! I probably should have left a review a decade ago. I've been playing Nuclear Throne since the Greenlight pre-release (anyone remember greenlight?), and have multiple thousands of hours in this game (way more than it shows in my profile because progress was reset on official launch). I don't play EVERY day, but I do play MOST days. The daily challenge gives a great reason to return. While I exclusively play as Robot, there are loads of interesting characters, each with their own cool mechanics, so there's guaranteed to be a playstyle that matches your personality. Great art and sound design, CHALLENGING game play that makes you want to try again and again. Lacks a lot of the depth you tend to see in other rogue-likes, but the stripped down gameplay lends itself to arcade-style score-chasing. Great to pick-up-and-play. you can play for 5 mins, or hours. I cannot recommend this game enough! After 10 years, I'm still playing, and the new character and a new skin for my fave character will guarantee I'll keep playing (I would've anyway). Thanks Vlambeer, this game is easily one of my favorites of all time! Lastly, if you're still reading this, my band wrote a song about NT called "If Fish Could Walk." You can listen to it for free on our bandcamp (forgive the recording quality, we're a small local band without much of a budget) so please give it a listen if you like Nuclear Throne! https://theparaplegics2001.bandcamp.com/track/if-fish-could-walk Thanks again to Vlambeer!

Pirated this game like 9 years ago in highschool, so i have like a bajillion hours actually, played quite consistently since then. I litteraly just bought it because at some point it felt ugly not giving the devs my money, they kinda deserve like a piece of my soul or one of my kidneys Its good It's hard The soundtrack is fire It has the JUICE The modding community is very good And the first time you get to loop 3 or further you kinda achieve nirvana, unlock the secrets of the universe, see images of venus, and get the capacity to speak to shovels. Also, new update in 2 days, good stuff

Criminally underrated in indie roguelike/roguelite circles. People are quick to point to TBOI or Hades as the definitive indie roguelike, but this game usually isn't talked about as much, which is a shame, because the balancing and tightness of design in Nuclear Throne is unparalleled. A lot of roguelikes sell themselves on the idea that "every run is different" because there are so many items and abilities. Some even actually succeed to deliver on that huge scope, and, when done well, can result in a pretty good game. TBOI is a good example of this. There are a huge amount of items, and it really is true that every run is different. However, that isn't always an upside. Sometimes "every run being different" can mean you get horrible luck and the run feels unwinnable, or largely stacked against you. Nuclear Throne avoids this approach almost entirely, which is rare for a roguelike. There's a good handful of abilities and weapons, plenty enough to keep things interesting, but it doesn't have the range and crazy run variety of something like TBOI. On paper, that sounds like a bad thing, and it would be, if it didn't mean Nuclear Throne can focus so much more on refining its basic gameplay. There are VERY few truly bad weapons in this game. The same is true for the abilities (mutations) you get as you level up. There's some variance of course, but almost every run can reliably get good enough mutations to make it at least to the "end" of the game, and quite often a decent bit further. (More on that later) The characters in Nuclear Throne are particularly well designed, having not only great character designs, a lot of charm and personality, but also being wildly different, all very fun to play, and all very well balanced in comparison to each other. Every character has unique active and passive abilities, a unique variant of a mutation that upgrades your active ability, and 2 character-specific ultra mutations that function as a way to lean further into either your active ability or passive ability as you get deeper into the run. Unbalanced options between characters exist, but are few and far between, and a lot of it can often come down to personal preference. The enemies, bosses and area hazards in Nuclear Throne are all pretty much perfect. There aren't any enemies at all that feel unfair or badly designed. Not only are the bosses and enemies well designed, but it never feels like you're at a disadvantage when it comes to health or firepower. Nearly everything in this game is a glass cannon, including yourself. Most bosses can be killed in a matter of seconds if you know what you're doing, and even the harder and tankier bosses will only take an experienced player a minute or two at most. Enemies follow the same concept, being extremely powerful and dangerous but only ever surviving a couple of seconds of concentrated assault. Naturally, this also means you die extremely easily, but the game has such a fast reload that you can get right back into your next run in less than a couple of seconds. This all lends itself to being incredibly addicting, and contributing to that intoxicating "one more run" feeling. Finally, even after thinking you've beaten the game, Nuclear Throne isn't over. If you're up for the challenge, the game doesn't technically HAVE an end. Once you discover how to loop the game, you can continue fighting through increasingly large and difficult hoards of enemies, forcing you to refine your strategies and weapon/mutation choices even further. Looping also doesn't feel unfair or uninteresting. You continue to improve and push past the seemingly insurmountable odds until loops feel like normal gameplay. It's a difficult challenge, but one that is extremely gratifying and rewards the player fine-tuning their skills and their use of the tools available to them. In summary, Nuclear Throne has an amazing core gameplay loop, backed by a killer soundtrack and great sound effects, outstanding character and location designs, and extremely indepth item and ability balancing, making use of a smaller but more focused group of weapons and upgrades. also it has yv in it #verifyvenuz
