Counting Squirrels Don't it always seem to go That you don't know what you got 'til it's gone? They paved paradise and put up a parking lot Ooh, bop-bop-bop. Ooh, bop-bop-bop (na-na-na-na-na) ~ Counting Crows 2002 That's about enough of a clue that' won't spoil this game for you as I can manage. This game has everything, or not. Beans You will be camping, there will be tinned beans, coffee, and tinned tuna, but no tin opener. There is a fax machine, you will learn to use it. Also a small petrol generator, it's your lifeline. For me the big downside is that all the movable junk in the game has no real gameplay purpose. Which is probably a good thing, because the game is very focused on the mission, a mission to save an ancient and beautiful forest. It is all however very basic, basic soundscape and very basic graphics. Just enough to tell the story. Slow to get going NUTS is deceptively slow-paced and drags it's heels initially. NUTS is also graphically taxing on the eyes, very monochrome. Once you realise that the slow start is merely a tutorial that gets you used to the key mechanic of the game; and that is to place trail cams, then it all speeds up. Each night you have to place a trail cam to capture something, and each night you will have to move the camera a bit. You will find yourself taking a gamble on trail-camera placement, but it never seems to work out. As you get more trail cameras, the number of things to track grows. And the difficulty just keeps ramping up as you have to move faster and you have to rely on memory more and more. All the time tension builds. Who is crooked? I really enjoyed this game, can you tell? And not just because it has squirrels, but because if you decide to trust no-one, then the immersion becomes so so deep. Is your employer crooked, is the property giant greedy or malicious too? What exactly are the damn squirrels up to? I don't know if I can even trust the squirrels, they certainly are making my life hard. The squirrels in NUTS reminded me of Puzzle Agent and the little-people of Scoggins. A game that grows on you till eventually the stark monochrome line-art style starts to look quite atmospheric. Probably one of the most visually impressive, and unique gameplay I had alongside with satisfying interactions. Will make you doubt that it's a horror game, but rest assured, there are no horror elements other than my anticipation for a non-existent jumpscare. A great example for environmental story-telling.

It’s important to mention right at the beginning: 1. I bought this game for only 2.45€ 2. I hadn’t seen the trailer beforehand, so I was literally no expectation. I spent a lot of time after finishing the game reading reviews, mainly the negative ones. And I have to admit, I agreed with most of them completely. For me, this game stood out simply because I managed to get it for a very low price, and for some reason I happened to be in the kind of mood where a simple little game could completely pull me in. The photography mechanic kept me engaged, and although there was a weak storyline behind it, it didn’t involve me emotionally that much. So yes, the ending was flat and wrapped up quickly, but I didn’t really mind. But it’s also true that the atmosphere is very reminiscent of Firewatch, and maybe because of that, people naturally expect more from the game. Long story short: in my opinion, the original €24.5 price is absolutely not worth it. What I can recommend is: don’t take the game too seriously, try to buy it during a sale, and definitely read the negative reviews as well, because in this case they are surprisingly detailed and well-written.

So, I enjoyed NUTS! It landed right at the intersection of things I like: light puzzle mechanics, environmental storytelling, and a first-person perspective that doesn’t require horror to stay engaging. The rhythm of placing cameras, reviewing the footage, and slowly narrowing in on the goal was super satisfying. I felt like a little private eye spying on those squirrels! The limited color palette for each chapter worked well overall, though one chapter had a day-to-night transition that strained my eyes enough to require a short break. That aside, the visual style was clean and tactile, and the variation between chapters kept the game-play from getting repetitive. While the narrative doesn’t wrap up in a traditional sense, I didn’t really mind. The overall experience felt complete in its own way. Perfect length for a single afternoon or evening. Would recommend if you're into slow-paced, observational games that give you a small world to pay close attention to and explore.

Love love love this game! Perfect mix of environmental exploration and intrigue. The art style is phenomenal too, it's a nice break from all the gritty realism around these days and it's got its own unique voice. It took me until halfway through the game to realize I could 1.) Zoom in on the TV footage and 2.) Take pictures with the handheld camera. Oops.
