Here, the reviews surprisingly didn't lie, this is absolute perfection) The whole point of the game is figuring out how 60 guys and gals on the "Obra Dinn" met their demise. The gameplay here is extremely non-standard. You basically watch people die and try to identify who's who FROM SCRATCH. When you suddenly catch some tiny detail you missed earlier, your brain gets a pure hit of dopamine. You gotta pay close attention here: look at who's standing with whom, who shoved who, who's looking where, where someone ran off to or where they're located at a different point in "time". All those tiny details. But some deaths are such ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ that you sit there for ten minutes staring at a skeleton thinking: "Well, you either died of old age or died laughing because a donkey ate a fig." There's relief in getting confirmation every three guessed fates... awesome feature, but it kind of ruins the atmosphere a bit. Because instead of that detective high, you start brute-forcing combinations like a high schooler on a test. Though without it, you'd rot in this game. Guessing everything from scratch is straight-up necromancer magic))) The game even warns you about it. You have a notebook with a roster of everyone on board. And a sketch with their faces. Your job is to figure out who is who and how they kicked the bucket. The beauty is that every puzzle can be solved in different ways: an accent, the shape of a cap, THE SHAPE OF A SKULL))))), a word in dialogue, a shadow in the sketch, nationality, tattoos.... Sometimes everything clicks purely by accident, and you sit there feeling like a genius even though you just guessed at random. Another cool feature - you can "jump" between deaths and rewatch previous scenes. Adds serious depth. Like not just "who died", but "how the hell did we even get here". And overall, the game goes in reverse. You start from the end and slowly unspool this bloody knot backwards. Which is pretty symbolic: you're not just investigating, you're literally digging graves to piece together the story from bones. All the best.
I previously tried to complete this game once a few years ago, but I let the game slip away from me and ended up too disconnected from the progress I had made to continue. More recently (a year ago at this point), I had a roommate with whom I played this game to completion alongside. He and I both sat on the couch for a few nights in a row making verbal deductions and piecing together the story--and we were both hooked. By the time it was over, we were both left shocked in absence of its continuation. My roommate was not someone who played games ever and so he asked if there was another title like this to play. Naively I thought we could recapture the magic of investigating the Obra Dinn with another game, but I have yet to find anything that is quite as enthralling as this story. He moved out once the semester was over; this game was the highlight of all the media I had consumed throughout that time. My recommendation cannot be more glowing. This game is one of the best titles out there--across any genre.

Pros & cons: ++ What begins as a bureaucratic routine for an East India Company insurance investigator on a ghost ship soon develops into the uncovering of an unlikely chain of events full of heroism, murder, mutiny and theft, including some maritime horror stories. ++ The actual gameplay consists of identifying the crew members through astute deductions based on clue fragments and a process of elimination. And it is precisely at this point, dear reader, that you will experience an unprecedented feeling of accomplishment. o During my second playthrough, I would have liked the option to skip the dialogue and cutscenes. For it would have significantly shortened my work as a corrupt investigator, accusing the captain of being a savage cannibal responsible for the cascade of misfortunate events. Summary: The depth of the investigations on board this cursed vessel completely surprised me, and presented an originality that my cold, logical heart had long forgotten. Towards the end, I became obsessed with finding out what ill omen had befallen the Obra Dinn and its crew.
