July 2025
In the category of "low(er) budget games I've never heard anyone ever mention", Observation is one of the best I've played. I was pleasantly surprised throughout and very satisfied in the end. There is respect to be found for a game that knows exactly what story it wants to tell and how; does so great, and then ends just when it has to, without dragging feet or milking anything for more. Its a clever little ~8 hour narrative+puzzle game with a good story - you can think of it as a miniseries of a TV show - but the thing it really shines in is the environment and atmosphere. I'm no spaceman, but the space station the game takes place in feels so handcrafted and real; it makes the whole ride feel very authentic; and all of that is then added to by some really good voice acting. There are some narrative whiplash moments when the pacing and jumps between scenes disorient you even more than flying the drone on XYZ axis and then some bugs detracted from the experience (characters losing their pathing and gliding through walls or teleporting around a bit; event trigger (once) bugging out and needing a game restart). There are no questmarkers or highlights so at some points the game gives you too little to go by, resulting in you pixelhunting the actionable item for 10 minutes, which is frustrating. But all these issues personally I could overlook and enjoy the game for what it is. It's not going to be for everyone, but if you're a sucker like me some for realistic space sci-fi setting and reverse-engineering a well written and believable mystery story from audio logs and notes, you should like this one.

[url=https://store.steampowered.com/app/906100/Observation/]Observation is a unique story-driven sci-fi thriller, with an immersive and eerie atmosphere that draws inspiration from [url=https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0062622/]2001: A Space Odyssey, and some elements from [url=https://store.steampowered.com/app/17470/Dead_Space_2008/]Dead Space , creating an authentic futuristic setting. The game places you behind the lens of S ystems A dministration & M aintenance (S.A.M.), the artificial intelligence controlling a drifting space station. You'll interact with cameras, system logs, airlocks, and various onboard systems to guide astronaut Dr. Emma Fisher as she investigates what went wrong aboard the drifting station. It doesn't take long before it becomes clear that an unexplained and inexplicable event has occurred. Gameplay revolves around a series of system-based puzzles, such as locating crew members, rerouting power, diagnosing problems, and occasionally navigating the station's exterior. Each of these tasks reinforces your role as S.A.M., helping you feel like a part of the station. What stood out most were the aesthetics of the space station, which feels convincingly used and lived-in, with environmental details that ground it in realism. Subtle visual effects like screen tearing and video glitches add authenticity to S.A.M.'s perspective. Navigation can feel a bit disorienting at first, but once mastered, it adds to the immersion. I played the game on the [URL=https://store.steampowered.com/steamdeck/]Steam Deck , where it worked perfectly. The game was relatively short, with a handful of achievements, some of which are easy to miss. I may come back to it another time to collect the ones I missed. Even though the ending left me with questions, and a desire for more closure, the journey itself was enjoyable. If you're into story-driven sci-fi mysteries, Observation is absolutely worth your time! 9/10

I recommend Observation purely for its unique premise, atmosphere, and suspenseful mystery, and not for its gameplay, which I thought was mostly tedious. Watch the full review here: https://youtu.be/zgD4jaU5feQ

Excellent, Beautiful, Immersive. Gripping Narrative. Believable near future hard sci-fi that can stand toe to toe with Stanislaw Lem. Instills a great desire for the betterment of humanity. Wonderful voice acting, great pacing. Interesting puzzles that remind you of the good days of Riven without being too obtuse. The game requires your attention which fosters more immersion. If you're stuck, breathe, all of the answers are logically in front of you; this is not moon logic. The controls are better than reviewers led me to believe; however, a controller is strongly recommended. TECHNICAL PROBLEMS: To launch the game I had to set Compatibility Mode to "Windows 8" and to get more than 6 fps, I had to use DXVK to change the API to Vulkan (drag and drop 2 files in directory(dxgi.dll and d3d11.dll) - easy) 21:9 Ultrawide Support: Game does not support, but ROSE has two fixes linked on Observations' PCGamingWiki page. One can remove cinematic letterboxing, but it returns midway through and re enables towards the end. I want more.
