This is “Nintendo hard “ not that artificial hollow knight difficulty but that fair old school challenge. I can definitely see bits of gargoyles quest and ghosts and goblins and castlevania especially the more Arcady haunted castle. The crt is effect and graphics kicks me right back to my childhood in the late 80s and early 90s It also runs great on the steam deck despite saying unsupported. The only thing you need to do is set native resolution and it works perfectly out of the box other wise. Recommended.
Stick with it. Seemed to really click the second time I booted it up. Excellent sense of adventure with multiple branching paths that really get you hyped. The upgrades can be genuinely very rewarding. Using the overworld map to avoid much of the metroidvania backtracking and create chapters that you can complete in an evening was brilliant game design. Update: Quit at 7.6 hours in. Got to a few areas with frustrating puzzles like the teeth doors and damage sponge bosses. Not sure if I was supposed to find other items by this point to make the bosses more manageable or it's a skill issue. Likely both. Still would give it a thumbs up overall.
Odallus: The Dark Call is a pretty great dark fantasy 2D action platforming Metroidvania. The graphics, controls, music, sound effects and cutscenes are exactly like what you'd see in an NES game from the early 90's, JoyMasher have nailed the execution perfectly. It's Ghouls 'n' Ghosts crossed with Castlevania and the art design and monsters are clearly inspired by Berserk. The gameplay is fun, addictive and difficult but not quite as frustrating to become "NES hard". It's always clear where you're supposed to go next and once you try and die to a boss a few times you will beat them without too much trouble. I did find the final boss to be very hard and annoying though but i am fat and old. Definitely worth it if you like retro games but with a modern level of polish.
