This 84-year-old guy can play this game. But beware, it needs a lot of patience. It is not a wham-bam thank you game. The graphics are very good. The buildings even better. You do need to be a good planner (which I am not) if you want a super doopa looking village (Town). If you feed them and see to their wants you will be OK. Grumpy's verdict 9/10

Everything in the game feels intentional and purposeful. Resource and production chains, even when they are complicated, make sense. Jobs are logically assigned and carried out. Needs from villagers make sense. If you're into simulations that actually simulate real life, you'll find it here. The graphics aren't mind-blowing (this is a one-person studio in a country at war, after all), but animations are entertaining, it renders really well even as your city and your geographic footprint expands, and the balance of textures and tones adds to the semi-cozy vibe. Updates are frequent, the creator is a regular and vocal presence in the community, and I have a high degree of confidence that whatever his eventual roadmap is, Ostriv will reach those goals. I was a Kickstarter supporter of Banished many years ago, and Ostriv is what Banished could have been if it had a theme to tie it together and ten more years worth of engaging technical progressions. It's worthy of your time, and the dev is worthy of our support. Slava Ukrayini!

Probably the most realistic settlement building I've ever played. The seasonal harvesting, food scarcity and struggle to satisfy people needs feels really authentic Another huge plus is how lovingly and accurate the game recreates the Ukrainian aesthetics. From music and clothing to architecture and overall village "vibes". I've absolutely enjoed seeing my small ten families hutor grow into an actual village, with founding families becoming wealthy and proud pillars of community, and tracing generations of villagers up to one small family who one day chose to call my settlement home. I love this game, always eagerly awaiting the next update and what changes and improvements it will bring to my cities.

Ostriv is a good game that has some nice innovate mechanics. It's not perfect and has flaws, unfortunately. It's simply too slow and undeveloped right now to be a superior medieval city simulator. What I now wish every game had was vector flexible buildings. There is no grid or fixed placement of buildings and crop fields, what a damn joy it is to have a wedge shaped building in a narrow fork in the road! I think the game is on a good path. Quicker development (devs are working in Ukraine, so no fault their nation is invaded), stronger economics and mods would make this game edge out Foundations, Farthest Frontier, and Manor Lords. 6.5/10

The flexibility in creating housing plots, decorative options, family heritage, and unique Ukranian setting add a lot to the experience. I found myself constantly wanting to go back to Ostriv while playing Manor Lords, as there's just much more depth here in terms of resource logistics to enjoy. If you enjoy Banished and Manor Lords, chances are you'll enjoy this one as well!
