Otome * Domain is an entertaining VN that has the protagonist become an impostor among girls through him crossdressing his way into an all maidenly school. Thankfully, wearing the clothes of the opposite gender doesn’t come as a logistical problem to our dear Minato, since he’s the girliest man to ever exist, beating out all the competition with his culinary prowess alone. The only problem is how he’s not fond of wearing women's clothes. This is understandable due to his pride as a man, even if his entire skillset and appearance betrays the ideal male stereotype within his ideals. It’s something he has to grow accustomed to. Suffice to say it’s a wacky dilemma he has to live through. Point being is that he eventually falls in love. Leaving the flood gates open up for three routes. The three fortunate To start I’ll rank the routes from best to worst. [*]Yuzu (Equivocal Girl Failure) [*]Hinata (Edgelord Chuunibyou) [*]Kazari (Pee Girl) Personally, I liked all three routes even if they were cursed in their own special way. An example of this is Kazari with her golden child stresses. The way it manifests is through her inability to take care of herself to the point where she is unable to go to a restroom somehow, since Kazari tends to wet herself, Ironically enough, unless she does her business post haste with the help of a handy bottle. Or the magnanimous Kyouma… err… I meant Hinata with her demon general status and quips about how she’ll dominate over the entire world. The cursed part is how she is in the dark on Minato’s true gender for a good while, especially while they’re dating and have done a few H-scenes together. So yeah… For the Girl Failure Yuzu, she’s more of a tomboy who cartoonishly can’t cook. Doesn’t help that it’s an overplayed trope that doesn’t add substance to Yuzu’s character, with her being the butt of the majority of jokes. The sole exception to finally building from this trope is when she tries to improve in her route. And overall it’s the strongest storyline at showing Otome*s strengths, all in part due to it managing to flesh out the other two girls. (This is in contrast to the other laser focused routes) My thoughts One of my bigger criticism of Otome * Domain lies in how the visual novel opens with it flashing you with Kazari doing her “business”. This is an unusual cheap shot at shock value or well it’s how I would describe it. since it’s a weird hook that is specifically made to get you to find out more about Kazari’s gross and unfathomable incompetence. Ultimately, the scene ends up being a great turnoff to anyone curious enough to check the Visual novel out. a friend quickly dropped this VN due to it. As for me, I weathered through the initial golden opening and was able to experience the VN without much further hiccups. The story itself is entertaining with Minato trying to blend in, all-the-while having his ideal view of the opposite gender broken by his infiltration. Thankfully, Minato isn’t that much of a creep and is quite respectful to the others. Although, he does go all horn dog the moment a route is in full force. Overall, Otome * Domain manages to deliver meaningful teachings pertaining to certain groups of people. Be it finding a way to break through gender stereotypes and finding meaning in your person through improvement. Wanting to be truly understood, yet being hard to get due to putting up an edgelord persona, and filtering out all the poor normies just trying to get to know you. Or failing to live up to the expectations of your perceived value or status, and managing to cleave your own slice to make yourself you. It’s humanizing to see these topics between each route, and I applaud Otome * Domain to be able to take me to those highs. The one thing I did notice between all the girls is a formula, specifically with the routes consistently having two fitting H-scenes that end up making sense and are a great payoff in the context of the romance. Otherwise, they sort of get lost in their own degeneracy where a lot of them feel unnecessary past the initial two scenes. It doesn’t help that the characters’ appearance make them look like they’re 12-14 years old. The other problem I find with the formula would be how it builds to a climax, only for the conflict to get resolved in record time. To put this into perspective these boiling points get resolved faster than the other conflict in the common route. The reveal of Minato’s gender varies between the three lucky girls, and not when they’re about to get into an H-scene. (Thank heavens) And on a final note I’ll say the biggest reason that I liked Yuzu’s route is due to Minato getting the spotlight. The VN manages to show Minato’s efforts for what he does to care for all the three girls in the dormitory, with him not being taken for granted. A few misconceptions Otome * Domain’s run time isn’t 24 hours. It’s more accurate to say it’s around 50 or so hours. You might not care if you’re only in it to do one route which would cost you 24 hours, but it would be weird to not check out the rest of the content. This realization made me consume the VN slower with me taking over 2 years to finally read it, truth be told. I spent 58 hours reading, so yay… I was unsure when it was gonna end, so I was scared to touch the VN, or at least distracted to put my foot down and commit. I’ll say that the H-scenes are a bit of a handful sometimes due to how we get to hear Minato's inner thoughts. They are ramblings on how he’s uncontrollable and “an animal”, which makes it a chore to read. Thankfully, it does eventually stop, but nevertheless, his thoughts can be too much to the point where I’m mentally checked out after the flurry of H-scenes start. Just beware that everyone is voice in this VN so you’ll be hearing Minato and whoever is involved. So prepare your ears or mute the voices. Final notes Otome * Domain is a cute visual novel. Minato is a great main character since he has to grapple with a few of his flaws and come to terms with him being the girliest man. Where his story is genuinely humanizes I’d give it around a 7/10. Since there are a few hiccups here and there but I relatively had fun with the VN. Be sure to install the patch from the publisher Shiravune to access any missing content. This includes the H-scenes. Also there’s a few grammar and spelling mistakes but nothing too egregious to take you out. Thanks for reading my review!
