I think this was Wolfires one entire attempt to make a game that wasn't just a "concept" but like, an actual game . I don't think a single game had me invested in its future as much as this one did, the art-style was incredible, combat was fun and intense, gore was brutal and unique. There wasn't a game that felt more samurai than this one (except for maybe Kenshi), even Ghosts of Tsushima doesn't give me that underdog badass in a brutal world feeling, despite being a literal samurai game. I even read the entire webcomic, I was invested in the world and I constantly checked for updates. But alas it was abandoned, much like this game. Not to be too harsh, even if I feel the end product is underwhelming compared to my expectations, this is still a 20 dollar game from wolfire. Was I expecting a LOTR level of lore and media to made about a game with anthro animals brutally murdering each other? The game was in development for years feeling like it had a long road ahead until suddenly boom, "final update: theirs a "story" now bye bye"! And that was that. As much as I may shit on the frankly depressing loss of interest the dev studio had, it was probably our fault in equal parts, for expecting so much more. Idk if wolfire is even around anymore so i shouldn't get my hopes up for 3rd game in this series. Look I've yapped long enough on how i wish we got more but, this review is still postive. Because i cant deny that even as bare-bones and "conceptual" this game is, its still a blast to place a few dudes down in a sandbox map and hit a meaty dropkick right on their stupid face. Its also hilarious to try another dropkick just for the enemy to see it coming and let you whiff it completely, resulting in you crumpling up like a wet rag. I wish someone bought the rights to overgrowth and made a dark souls esq adventure with it, but there technically isn't anything stopping you from doing that for free. The sandbox editor is pretty straightforward. Theirs even plenty of pretty decently high quality mods out there, maybe not on the level of Skyrims modding scene... but still pretty good. Tl;dr: Maybe someday I can get a full overgrowth game that maximizes the potential of this world, but for now you got a 20 dollar concept title that offers surprisingly a lot for just a concept, with a easy sandbox editor that you can use to become a part of a old but gold modding scene. If you like samurai games, with brutal and lightning fast combat, then you found a home.

Watched a couple Youtubers play this game when I was a kid. I just got a job and this was the first game i thought to buy. It was wonderful. This is the kind of gameplay i thought it would be when i was a kid. Very Free moving and the almost janky physics and the way you sometimes just dont grab the ledge for absolutely no reason feels a lot like real parkour. 9/10 W Childhood experience

incredibly ahead of it's time. this game is likely one of the reasons I'm into game development due to the fact so much of it's development process was publicized, so watching videos of it's progress as a kid was no doubt inspiring. Despite starting development in 2008 it's graphics and gameplay hold up pretty well, not to mention most games even now can't even compare to it's ragdoll system. Even beyond all that, the game's code is now open source too, which is an excellent resource for game developers looking to learn procedural animation. tl;dr it's peak

I feel like Wolfire has this reputation of making tech demos that begrudgingly take the form of a game, and this is a perfect example of that. Maybe a turnoff for someone who is looking for an actual game, but as someone who works on games for a living this is like cocaine to me. The character controller (like everything else in this game) is extremely jank and bad by the standard of your typical character action game, but is extremely entertaining to play around with. The developer did a GDC talk on how he handled the character animation, and it's an extremely novel approach. I'll go as far as to say the ragdoll system blows Euphoria out of the water in terms of implementation. So if you're like me and like tech demos I'd highly recommend, but in terms of an actual game I feel like you could find much better for the price.

This game has a special place in my heart. I still remember playing the alpha versions back in the day when I was a kid, I remember the alpha changelog videos, I remember SumLauncher, i remember all of it. On top of being a big part of my childhood, Overgrowth is still one of my favorite indie games, and I'm glad I bought the game and supported the devs. <3
