For fans of games like X-COM, Keep Driving, and other procedural-type games, this is a wonderful success with a blend of thoughtful gameplay, character writing, and design. The art direction is a quaint style, and I very much enjoy the choice-driven adventures. It was a big challenge in the beginning, but once I got the hang of it, I really got into it. I look forward to many adventures in this game because you can have all sorts of companions (including dogs that you CAN pet!). 5/5 Highly recommended to all. Edit(s): Trigger warning: Do not play this if you cannot handle pretty regular dog death/killing. I feel that I must also say I got this on sale for 6.99 and that for that price point it is very worth it. I understand and respect the people who did not recommend this game at $20 for the lack of "upgrades" in late-game, even though I felt pretty damn strong towards then. Anyway, really solid. No bugs that I encountered.

whlie i generally agree that the game's replayability suffers once you see the game through to the end, and that rng can sometimes screw you over, i nevertheless thought this was a brilliant little game, very nifty little combination of tactical gameplay with a narrative, combined with a simplistic low poly style that nonetheless works quite well thanks to its art direction if a spiritual successor or such would come out, i would buy it in a heartbeat, i really hope the devs don't abandon this formula because despite its issues, this game is very interesting mechanically in a way that genuinely sucks you in, earlier today i spent my whole evening waiting to hurry home so i can play more overland such a hidden gem

Overland, developed and published by Finji, is a hauntingly minimalist strategy and survival game that reimagines the post-apocalyptic road trip as a series of tense, turn-based decisions. It places players at the wheel of a small, battered vehicle traveling through a ruined version of North America, guiding a group of survivors who are just trying to reach the next horizon. There is no overarching narrative in the traditional sense—no exposition about what happened, no grand speeches about humanity’s downfall. Instead, the story unfolds through small, emergent moments: the sound of a dying engine, the sacrifice of a companion, or the fleeting comfort of a campfire. Overland’s power lies in its restraint, using atmosphere, scarcity, and consequence to craft an experience that feels simultaneously intimate and vast. The core of Overland’s gameplay revolves around a series of compact, grid-based encounters that function as tactical puzzles. Each map represents a snapshot in the survivors’ journey—perhaps a ruined street littered with abandoned cars, a desert outpost, or a forest intersection. Every turn matters: each survivor has limited action points, and every move, whether picking up fuel, scavenging for supplies, or starting the car, attracts dangerous alien creatures drawn to sound. There’s no way to wipe the board clean of threats; instead, the goal is always escape. The decision-making is agonizingly tight—you’re constantly forced to choose between taking one more risk for precious resources or fleeing to live another day. The design thrives on tension, rewarding patience, adaptability, and a willingness to accept loss as inevitable. What makes Overland particularly striking is its presentation. The game is built around small diorama-like scenes, with each area resembling a tiny handcrafted model. The camera tilts and rotates smoothly, letting players admire the clean geometric art style and muted earth tones that evoke a world drained of life. The visual minimalism enhances the sense of isolation, while small details—the flicker of a distant fire, the gentle sway of overgrown grass—hint at the world’s quiet decay. The soundtrack, composed by Jocelyn Reyes, matches this tone perfectly: sparse ambient melodies punctuated by long silences and sudden bursts of tension. The audio design amplifies the emotional experience, turning each encounter into a mix of dread and melancholy. It’s a world that feels empty, but not dead—each sound, each flicker of light carries weight. Survival in Overland is as much about emotion as it is about mechanics. The survivors you meet along the way are procedurally generated, each with a short bio and a handful of traits, but you quickly form attachments regardless. A mechanic who can siphon fuel or a wanderer who heals others can become indispensable members of your journey, and losing them can sting in a way that scripted characters often don’t. Perhaps the most memorable companions are the dogs, which can carry items or even save your group at critical moments. These small touches of humanity—sharing a healing kit, sacrificing a passenger to distract monsters, or rescuing a stranded stranger despite the risk—create a subtle narrative that emerges naturally from play. Overland never tells you what to feel, but through its mechanics and silence, it makes you care. The game’s difficulty is unapologetic. Overland operates on procedural generation, which means luck plays as large a role as strategy. Some runs begin with favorable conditions—plenty of fuel, a reliable vehicle, or manageable enemy spawns—while others feel doomed from the start. This unpredictability reinforces the game’s themes of desperation and survival but can also frustrate players who crave fairness. There are moments when the randomness feels cruel, when your carefully maintained progress unravels because of one misstep or unlucky spawn. Yet that unpredictability is part of what makes each journey unique. It captures the spirit of the road trip—never knowing what lies beyond the next stop, balancing hope with the constant possibility of failure. Despite its difficulty and sparse narrative, Overland’s design feels deeply intentional. Every system serves its theme: fuel scarcity forces you to keep moving; noise attracts death; and every decision is permanent, reflecting the fragility of life in a dying world. Even the progression between regions—moving from forests to deserts to cities—mirrors a gradual descent into desolation. The lack of explicit exposition or dialogue allows players to project their own stories onto the journey, making every run feel personal. Some will see it as a meditation on survival, others as a study of endurance or sacrifice. The game’s minimalist storytelling leaves space for interpretation, which is one of its greatest strengths. Overland is not a game that caters to comfort. It’s slow, deliberate, and often harsh, asking players to accept loss and uncertainty as constants. But for those who engage with its rhythm, it becomes a deeply rewarding experience—an emotional road trip where strategy, survival, and storytelling blend seamlessly. It’s a game that demands patience and empathy, rewarding players not with victory, but with reflection. Finji’s creation is a rare example of how restraint and simplicity can evoke complex emotion. Beneath its quiet surface, Overland hides one of the most hauntingly human depictions of apocalypse in modern gaming—a journey where every mile traveled feels like borrowed time, and every small act of survival feels like defiance against the end of the world. Liminalism at it's best. Very replayable with a well executed atmosphere. Music is great too - sound design was a major consideration. Great game.

disclaimer: i had this game on itch.io and had a looot more hours there. despite what achievements may imply, i didn't get a perfect run on my first ever run LOL this used to be one of my favorite games when i was 14 or so, and i would say it still is a fav. jocelyn reyes' music is super cool and atmospheric and perfectly sets the tone (i actually specifically came back to this game after listening to the ost on bandcamp recently). the game also looks amazing. all the bugs look just creepy enough without venturing into horror game territory. the environments also look really pretty, and the diorama style of the levels is a really sick and unique touch the gameplay is also phenomenal and scratches all the right itches for me. the ticking clock of bugs closing in and each one you kill causing more to emerge makes for some great tension as levels turn into races to get to supplies before the bugs get to you. occasionally you'll perfectly execute some crazy strategy or flawlessly deal with some awful situation and it just leaves you feeling like a genius, it's awesome i'd recommend playing it on hard or expert though (you can switch difficulty by starting a new game from the menu during the intro, it doesn't let u choose initially). the default "normal" mode is actually an easy mode added a year post-launch, with one of its defining features being giving you 3 action points for all characters instead of 2, which completely breaks the challenge of the game imo but overall yeah, hard recommend. this game is a bit overshadowed by some of finji's other hits, but it's satisfied me in a way i haven't really seen many other games pull off. definitely an underrated gem
