Painkiller: Hell & Damnation – A high-octane remake of the cult classic shooter, delivering fast-paced combat, heavy metal energy, and hordes of demonic enemies. The visuals and performance are vastly improved, though level design feels dated in places. Pure, unapologetic old-school fun. ⭐ Rating: 8/10 – Loud, brutal, and satisfying — a hellish blast from the past done right. - Video Gameplay - https://youtu.be/Ro464-E_KQE - Follow my curator page - https://store.steampowered.com/curator/45547027/

After playing the original and this back and forth, it's very clear to me that the original Painkiller comes together much better in terms of visuals, tech, sound, and overall feeling and implementation. Hell and Damnation suffers from a very generic Unreal Engine 3 vibe, clearly built on top with minimal engineering effort to adapt the engine to the needs, vs. the original, which had an entire tech stack developed and adapted just for that project and its vision & needs alone. How does this manifest then? Well, in a bunch of ways, but right off the bat, the game just screams UE3 in its rendering characteristics for all the wrong reasons. The art, identity and overall atmosphere and vibe just doesn't come together as good as the original, making it feel worse to look at than the game that came 8 years before it at several times. There are sections that are quite dense with geometric detail compared to others, like the sewer before the train station or the first cemetery (even more excellent in the Halloween edition), but it is rare and not a quality that is kept over the entire game, unfortunately. I think both the original and the remake looked their best in darker, moodier and smaller environments. Some say the OPERA is gorgeous, and in some aspects it might be, but to me, it's a low point. This is because the arena is so large, open and bright. It lacks density and detail, as opposed to something more polished and moody that really embraces the tech it's built on, like Cemetery. There are some very moody and well crafted levels like the Orphanage and a few others where it plays extremely nice with both aesthetics and pacing. But eventually you run into something like Oriental Castle which is another low point for me. It effectively turns the game into Serious Sam, hundreds of enemies in open empty spaces result in a drag that isn't challenging, methodical or fun at all, and for me the game loses its identity at stages like that. I find it much more interesting with dense, confined and more challenging engagements that also spawn more detailed environments. While things certainly can be janky in the original, it's more so here. Movement feels less smooth, and balancing and pacing isn't as good as the original, with a bunch of levels mixed up or never brought over entirely, leaving the game with a lot fewer maps. It’s not all bad though, and the game was very faithful to the original in many aspects with a decent attempt at “remaking” it. The UI is a big improvement over original and stays clean and on theme, so credit where credit is due. Plenty of models, details, textures and animations also look better, which one would expect. Some levels also have a much more things going on, such as the Necrogigant walking around giving you a hint of what is to come. A special shoutout to the SoulCatcher which is an awesome new weapon that fits perfectly into the identity of Painkiller in both design and function. The impact from hitting enemies with it and lining them up for multi-gibs is awesome. It’s well implemented and stands out in the arsenal. The downside is that it is extremely overpowered, and you get the gun from the start. The hit detection seems strange, and again, possibly because this is very generic UE3 tech running under the hood, but a thing that is beyond understanding is how they didn’t implement a visual indication that you are taking damage. So not only does it feel like you get hit when enemies shouldn’t hit you, but when you get hit you also have no visual indicator of it in terms of shake/blood etc which is really annoying as you might just die all of a sudden without even knowing you were tanking a lot of damage. I can’t review MP today, but the original was very competitive and served as an excellent arena shooter. It was popular in high level e-sport tournaments such as CPL at the time, but by the time this dropped, arena shooters were already in a decline. It doesn’t matter how good of a game you make, those games ain’t getting a Multiplayer playerbase anytime soon, as shown with the excellent Diabotical. You can play LAN which is a godsend and makes it possible to enjoy and explore this game, and it’s multiplayer far after the game has died out on its own. However, being UE3, I would have little faith in its net code, especially if it wasn’t tailor-made for the game given how poorly UE has performed in tight MP-environments up to this day compared to something like ID Tech 3. People who say devs are lazy for the most part is just spewing out shit they know nothing about, you don’t produce anything near this while being lazy, but it is unfortunate that the project wasn't managed better or came together better as whole package, or was given enough time if that was an issue as well.

Blast from the past. Still fun after all these years.. Some fun weapons. Pretty much shoot enemies and survive areas like most retro first person shooters. Graphics still look good to me in 2025, just mindless shooting to kill time.

Playing side by side, I would say that this game is the best way to experience Painkiller nowadays. It has good graphics and the best maps of the original and previous entries. Buy it on a big sale with all DLC and enjoy.
