DISCLAIMER: I initially brushed this game off too fast and refunded it on steam. However, I felt bad afterwards for not giving it an honest try and remembered that I had the game on GoG. I've since played through most of the game on GoG and felt like writing a review here too. With that out of the way... Quake 4 feels very much like ID's answer to Half-Life. The game starts off really slow and the textures did not age nearly as well as Half-Life but once it gets going its actually a pretty good ride and some portions of the game as well as the shield mechanics feel kinda like early Halo games. I think its a very interesting game since its really nothing like the other Quake games at all, besides some loosely connected thematic elements from Quake II. It really plays and feels like a weird cross between Half-Life and Halo CE which is kinda cool. The beginning is a little boring, but once you get past the exposition and find a few more weapons (about 15-20 mins into it) the game actually really shines. The vehicles and boss fights are pretty cool as well. I will say though this game has several pretty intense horror sections with lots of gross-out mutilation and other body horror stuff so absolutely keep that in mind if you're not a fan of that stuff. Those portions don't last too long but it would be dishonest to say that they weren't a huge part of the game. Quake has always been a gory franchise but ID kinda took it to a whole new level here, haha. I don't think I like this game better than Half-Life or Halo CE but its enjoyable and a pretty interesting direction for a Quake game. Kinda wish it were possible to rescue more of the friendly NPCs. << Potential Spoilers >> but often it feels like the game just kills them off for fun and shock factor which kinda makes you numb to it since some sections of the game kill off minor characters before you can feel any sort of emotion towards them. I kinda preferred the early game portions in this regard since the other characters didn't just feel like cheap expendable trash and had enough personality to be interesting. If you like gory boomer shooters with some half-life 1 inclinations, you will probably like this game.
Quake 4 is a sequel to Quake 2, focusing more on the single-player aspect. Quake 4 should be approached as its own thing, however. While the base of Quake 2 can be seen, it's still very different. For example, a good chunk of the game is spent going around with squadmates. It's nice to feel like I'm not the only one here, but gameplay-wise their effect is rather minimal, save for the healing that medics and tech guys can do. At least on the difficulty I was in. I don't play much of FPS games, so when there were four options for difficulty given upon start of a new game, I opted for the recommended one: Corporal, the second from lowest. The game was too easy except for the last two stages. If you have some but still little experience with FPS games, I recommend taking the third difficulty, Lieutenant. (The difficulty settings could've done with a little better explanations...) That is, if you want some challenge. Just fiddling around with the variety of weapons was fun by itself, too. There are a total of 10 different weapons, all good for a variety of situations and worse in others, and each of them receives small upgrades as the game progresses. Although there is one problem: Only the basic blaster and the machinegun have flashlights on them. Why? A lot of areas in the game are dark, so instead of being ready to shoot with a weapon of my choice, I have to walk around with the machinegun and quickly change weapons when I see an enemy. If necessary, the machinegun isn't that bad of a weapon. Still, did the space military run out of budget for flashlights for other weapons? Apparently there are some mods that make the game graphically better, but I didn't fiddle with any of that. The graphics, after changing in-game settings, were overall fine. You can see the age of the game with the lower resolution textures and very visible polygons, but I still found myself admiring the interior areas' sci-fi machinery, and disgusted by the gore. I did experience some audio bugs. Sometimes - rarely - all audio would cut off for a few seconds. Sometimes the audio would glitch out, making everything sound robotic. Restarting the game fixed this, so no big deal. About the story... I'm hearing impaired. Spoken English has always been a difficult language for me to follow. This game has a lot of talking and no subtitles. Thus, no story for me. It sounds mostly like army talk, though, so I don't imagine I missed much. Strauss was fun to listen to, though. Too bad he doesn't appear much. There was one thing I could tell: There is a scene that is incredibly well-made, something I haven't seen in other games I've played. It is very gross, and it changes the tone of the game. However, in my opinion it doesn't change the tone enough : People go by almost as if nothing happened, the army talk continues, and all that changes is some army strategies or whatever. But I guess that's just how this game was made. While I would have liked something that touches more on the human condition, the focus here is more on glorifying the military, which is something I find harder to appreciate these days. Either way, the gameplay makes up for it, and is the reason I picked this up to begin with. So overall verdict: The game is too easy, go with the higher difficulties; weapon variety is fun; graphics are old but still fine, may need some tweaking depending on your machine; there are no subtitles, so expect to miss out on the story if you're not used to listening to English. Quake 4 is nothing ground-breaking save for That Scene, but is a decent 7 - 8 hour action package. Might want to check out F.E.A.R. for a more interesting horror-shooter experience.
