This game is so remarkable. The simplicity of its game mechanics, which it gradually introduces at an excellent pace, and the beauty of the logical implications that follow from them form an elegance that I am yet to observe perfected to this degree in any other game. After each set of puzzles, when a new game mechanic is presented to raise what can be done to a new level, I find myself astounded at the cleverness that just keeps on surprising me. I am over 200 puzzles in, captivated, and have thus far never found myself in frustration. This game is very entertaining for anyone with an interest in puzzles. It performs very well, too. There have been no bugs of any kind. 10 out of 10 experience
In the credits, Patrick's Parabox thanks 3 games: Stephen's Sausage Roll, The Witness, and Recursed. Name-dropping, no doubt, to be uttered in the same breath as those classics. With The Witness's boxy learn-through-tinkering level design, Stephen's Sausage Roll's title and acid-trip sokoban, and Recursed's, well, recursion, it resembles all three while never achieving the difficulty, intricacy, or greatness of any of them. But it's good. Arguably, very good. It also has, far and away, the shallowest learning curve I've ever experienced in a puzzle game. Each new mechanism is introduced with multiple simple levels that wordlessly scream: "Use the cool new thing this way! Oh, you want to explore its power? Too bad, I said THIS WAY!" Such hand-holding goes a long way toward explaining how the puzzle count lurches past 300 levels. It admirably explores just about every mechanism that might precipitate from the elevator pitch: "recursive sokoban." (Especially clever is how the game addresses the tricksy concept of infinity.) For most any game, 300+ levels would be overkill, but so many of these are painless procedural primers that the few interesting optional challenge levels in each section are the only ones that take any time or effort. The real joy for me came after the credits. There, the game drops a giant set of true challenge puzzles along with a couple of alternate-universe areas that ask, "What if we had implemented physics like this instead?" At long last, all my puzzle-loving completionist pleasures were piqued. It finally lets the game stop teaching and start showing off. Worth the wait, absolutely, but I'd rather not have waited at all. 7.5/10
This is is probably one of the hardest puzzle games I ever play, if not the hardest (excluding baba is you) It's a brilliant game that makes you explore every gameplay mechanic out of the idea of "Sokoban with recursion and portals" and even more It's a hard game but a very satisfying one, especially when you start to fully understand the mechanics, but I recommend you play another game that introduces recursion, portal and general non euclidian levels, games like Portal, Manifold Garden or Superliminal just for you to get how the main mechanic on this game works
It's a Sokoban-like, except it recurses. You can go into smaller blocks. The same block might exist in multiple places. You can create infinities. Fun! Of course, with mechanics as strange as that, it takes quite some brain power to wrap your head around it. Fortunately, the game is very generous with introductory levels. Maybe a little too generous; many of the hard stuff are saved at the end in challenge levels. But it means many people can play the game and see how far they can understand the mechanics before things go really weird. While it's still ultimately a Sokoban, the puzzles tend to be small and compact, so the execution is not terrible. If you like puzzle games with strange mechanics, this is well worth to explore.
