Amazing. This is the mature and fully realized Nancy Drew game fans have been asking for for years. None of the ND dupes have really caught my eye because of the janky graphics or flat voice acting or lack of details and exploration, but Penelope Pendrick has none of those issues. But I don't want to solely paint this game as an ND dupe because it really is its own unique thing and improves upon the ND games in many ways. I loved that the dialogue and characters felt more realistic and witty than the sometimes sanitized environments of the ND games. - Characters: There is plenty of dialogue with every character; they each have layers and backstories, and they each do something to arouse your suspicion. It's never quite clear who is telling the truth...I truly had no idea who the culprit would be until the very end. I came around to really care about all of them (well, almost all of them); the way they were written was superb. - Puzzles: So satisfying! Not nonsensical bordering on impossible like some later Nancy Drew games. I especially loved a homework/logic puzzle early on but there was a good mix of the classics (torn-up note, scavenger hunt), mathematical puzzles, and crazy (in a good way) puzzles. Most of them felt organic and like you would encounter them in real life. - Settings: Loved how new locations kept unfolding up until the very end! Plenty of snooping to do -- it really felt like I was in someone's house or storage closet rummaging through their things. So much detail. My only issue was that I often didn't know how to trigger the next conversation or task to do; lots of wandering around, setting the alarm, and calling random people hoping they would answer. But that's easily worked out with future games, which I hope are in the works, because this first installment was extremely promising!

LONG TIME Nancy Drew fan here. I've long missed the old interface of HERinteractive games since they've changed formats and changed every puzzle into a Sudoku marathon. This has more than scratched that long long missed itch. Julia, you killed it. My 33 year old self was transported back to being 9 or 10 solving Treasure in the Royal Tower all over again.. I'll be buying the next one the second it's out.

I've been playing Nancy Drew games with my family since 2003, still play them as an adult, and have completed all 34 plus the dossiers; this is the closest we've gotten to a True Nancy Drew game since Sea of Darkness. Art of Deceit is a game that wholly understands the ND formula, down to the details of having a kooky phone character to consult on an edutainment topic, fastidiously avoiding Penelope's reflection, and letting you die in ways both horrifying and ridiculous. In fact, it's such a good successor that I found myself going "oh my god , Nancy" whenever an insensitive dialogue option would pop-up, and then remember oh, wait, it's Penelope. I never write reviews, but I'm trying to manifest as much cash as possible for Default Cube so that we get more of these. This feels like the start of something new. I think we're just like one major Nancy Drew streamer away from seeing a huge spike. There *are* some growing pains here: a bit too much talking, starting with an opening five-minute unskippable monologue overlain on one static visual of a typewriter, after which you're launched into a ten-minute phone call. Small quality-of-life complaints, like when you order pizza, you have to sit around doing nothing for 30 in-game minutes, which translates to 3 agonizingly long minutes of real time. Or, you can pick up some objects immediately and others only after you have reason to. (Why did she steal a random spray bottle on sight but wait to pick up a box of screws?) Lots of little hitches like that. Sometimes the game was really good about anticipating my next thought (like when Penelope's next question for a suspect was also mine), and sometimes I felt like I was being arbitrarily held back (like when I couldn't fix an arcade game until another NPC told me to do what I already wanted to do). I got stuck for upwards of an hour at least twice, once because it let me cross off a task that I hadn't actually finished doing. ( I didn't realize that you could interact with one of the bootprints at the cliffs, which you have to do to trigger the next sequence, and I had already crossed off exploring the cliffs on my checklist. ) But here's how I think about it: Art of Deceit is objectively a much (much!) better first entry for an IP than Secrets Can Kill. And I had a great time with it. There are all the classic puzzles you know and love, plus a crazy secret passageway you won't want to miss. (There's one part of it that's so freaky-cool it made me pause and make the @_@ face for a solid thirty seconds.) Also, if you're somehow still not convinced, Default Cube gets away with using all sorts of words that HerInteractive could never, like "heterosexual" and "methhead", which should give any ND vet a shiver of forbidden delight. Who could ask for anything more?

This game is fantastic. It really captures the spirit of the old Nancy Drew PC games while also contributing new ideas, mechanics, and slightly more mature themes. I couldn't believe I squeezed 13 whole hours of game play! It is a very high quality adventure game and 100% worth the price. It also has replay value! I will definitely be playing it a second and third time. :) To the developer, Julia, creating games is your calling, I hope you continue this series and have tons and tons of success!!
