April 2025
I've replayed this game more times than I can count and I can confidently say that it will never, ever get old for me. From the moment little me launched this game, I was in love. Every year I come back to it, and every year it affects me just the same; whether that be the pure joy I feel rediscovering easter eggs I somehow forgot about, or the aching feeling I get when realizing I will never be able to play this for the very first time again -- it honestly, HONESTLY has impacted my life so greatly, more than any other game I know... and I have games with over 2k hours on it. But playtime be damned, this is my favorite game. My friend had made a point that many games nowadays are similar in nature (with shooter games being the example used, however I can apply that to many, many other games). The fact that a 14 year old game, to me, surpasses these games that have graphics so intensive that that's solely what it's known for is incredibly bittersweet, and yet, in a way, I wouldn't change it. The real charm of this game comes with the period of time it was made in (the golden age, I'd say), and due to the nature of post 2020 style games, I can't help but imagine that it would unfortunately end up like most media: popular for about a month, before being forgotten about in favor of something new. A game like Portal doesn't deserve that treatment. That hasn't happened to Portal, or Half Life, or any of the notable Valve games, really. It's quiet, there's no official new content, but I always find myself stumbling across other Portal fans in the wild. If not the story, or the gameplay, or the funny shit you can do in co-op, then my favorite part of this game would purely be the timeless factor of it. I've definitely rambled and this is a hell of a lot more dramatic than my other reviews, but I couldn't understand why I reviewed a fangame prior to this one. Maybe it's because I've never really been able to find the words to describe how much this game means to me. Like, literally, this whole block of text still doesn't do any justice on how much I love it.
