In an effort to play games already in my library, I finished Potion Tycoon this last week and after seeing the amount of negative reviews, I've gotta throw my two cents in here, too. As of right now, only 2% of players have the "Finished Game on Normal Difficulty" achievement, which really surprised me. It's not /that/ difficult of a game. I had some trouble with the early game difficulty curve (Pro-tip: establish a revenue source before expanding operations), but after a handful of restarts, it only took me about 25-ish hours to finish. I would say that going into this game you need to know that it's much more of a Store Manager game than it is a Potion Making game, and that's fine. There's other Potion Making games out there, and I'm sure they're able to scratch that itch. I found minimal bugs, if any. Nothing a reset couldn't fix. Overall, it was a largely positive experience, and whether you get it on sale or full price is up to your financial situation, but You could probably get about 2 good full game runs in before the gameplay gets really stale.

After about 9 hours I feel like you've seen everything the game has to offer. After that, it feels like you're spinning your wheels in the mud, because the game lacks the granular information and control you'd need to really optimize and automate processes. My biggest criticism is that the late-game technologies feel sort of pointless because money already felt pretty much meaningless by the time I was only midway up the research tree, and the late-game technologies don't feel particularly well planned-out or impactful for gameplay as whole. The small size of the building you're operating in is frustrating, and the "advanced construction" research doesn't actually expand the size of your build boundary like I originally thought it would. Overall, this is a competent and enjoyable incremental game with aspirations of being an automation game. It lacks the depth and granularity necessary to approach some of the big names in the automation genre, but it's worthwhile time for money spent. With about 11 hours of gameplay in a single run under my belt, I feel like I've seen everything it has to offer, and I'm satisfied with it.

Started with a cauldron and a dream. Ended up becoming kingmaker. Hire weirdos. Mix monster toe. Outsell rivals. Gameplay? deep. Systems? satisfying. Vibe? Cozy chaos. UI's clunky early on. Late game slows down in master diff. But once it clicks, it clicks. Perfect for fans of management sims with a magical twist. Bubbling fun. 4/5 potions. Would concoct again.

You’ll go from humble herbalist to magical mogul, juggling ingredients, staff, and customer demands—all while trying to keep your cauldrons from literally exploding. The Good: Creative Concept: Running a potion shop sounds simple, but this game makes it surprisingly deep. From brewing recipes to marketing your magical goods, there’s a lot to manage. Satisfying Automation: As your shop grows, watching your well-oiled production line of gatherers, brewers, and sellers feels really rewarding. Art Style & Atmosphere: The hand-drawn visuals, whimsical animations, and magical setting are full of charm. It feels like a cozy, offbeat fantasy world you'd want to get lost in. Replay Value: There are plenty of ways to specialize—go for speed, quality, or corner a niche market in love potions. The strategic layers open up nicely as you play. The Not-So-Good: Clunky UI: Menus can be overwhelming and unintuitive, especially when you're trying to scale your operation. It’s functional, but far from elegant. Steep Learning Curve: The game explains some systems well but leaves others up to trial and error. Expect a few failed shops before you find your rhythm. Bugs & Balance: AI workers sometimes glitch out, and certain upgrades or mechanics feel undercooked or overpowered. It’s clear that the game is still “brewing.” Pacing Issues: Early game can drag, and late game can feel like a grind unless you’re invested in full optimization. Potion Tycoon has the bones of a great simulation game—it’s quirky, complex, and genuinely satisfying when things start clicking. While it’s still rough in places (especially in UI and polish), the core gameplay loop is addictive enough for management sim fans to dive into. If you enjoy games like Two Point Hospital, Little Big Workshop, or Factorio—and like your spreadsheets with a sprinkle of fairy dust—Potion Tycoon is worth keeping an eye on as it continues to develop. It's the best and worst game for ADHD. I say that because it takes away all outside thought, which those of us who have it know that can be a blessing and a curse. After getting through all of the very detailed tutorials (which can feel a little overwhelming for a cozy/simulator, especially if you start it when your tired like I did lol), you really do control EVERYTHING. As in there is always something that needs doing, there's always something taking your attention. It sucks you completely into it, and before you know it, you've been playing for hours, forgot to eat dinner and did not remember once to drink water. It's great if you like your brain in another reality for a while, which I do. It's actually really relaxing in that sense. Excuse the chaotic review, but it is just a game you get lost in, it's really lovely.
