The only game I can think of that lets you transform into a grandma, grab a spec-ops military solider by the throat, and suplex his ass off the empire state building.

Leaving this review to let everyone know that the new stupid update that broke the game has been fixed finally, you have to use a mod: PrototypeFix- CrashFix - FPSFix - FrameDouble fix by emoose on nexus mods. The same person that fixed the game before this update. Also, It's recommended you uninstall the game completely before using the mod ^^

If you're considering buying this game, please read on for important info about increasing your odds of being able to run this game. The only reason I'm giving this a positive recommendation is because I can't give a numerical rating. Activision deserves 0/5 stars. They continue to sell this game and Steam continues to allow it, despite the game (in its current state when purchased) desperately requiring an update to allow it to play on modern hardware without crashing. I recommend it only because someone on Nexus made the effort to create a mod to fix the issues related to the age of this game, and thanks to their work, I am able to enjoy this game and indulge the nostalgia of playing this game many years ago. A huge shoutout to emoose, who created the mod over on Nexus. The mod is called "PrototypeFix - CrashFix - FPSFix - FrameDouble fix" and is the most highly endorsed mod for this game as of this review, and for good reason. If you purchase this game, once it is fully installed, do not launch it. I'm not sure if this matters, but a fresh install without running the game may prevent issues after applying the mod, so might as well play it safe. Go to Nexus Mods website, find the mod I mentioned above, and download and extract the files. Then in Steam, when you are on the page for Prototype, there will be a small gear icon on the far right. Click it, go to Manage, and click on Browse local files (or something like that). It'll open a window where the game's files are installed. Copy over the mod files you extracted. It'll prompt you to overwrite 2 existing files, let it do so. After that, you should be good to go back to Steam and launch the game normally. This is exactly what I did, and my game ran smoothly, without any crashes. All I did in the game settings was adjust the audio and turn up the mouse sensitivity. I'll update this review as I play more, in case I run into issues, but so far so good!

NOTE: The game does not work on modern hardware due to engine issues hardcoded in. You will need to aquire a mod to get the game to function on modern hardware! A link to the community fix can be found here; https://www.nexusmods.com/prototype/mods/52 Since Activision is highly unlikely to fix it. There is a fix for Prototype 2 linked in the mod as well and vice versa. This is my absolute favorite game of all time. I remember picking it up at a rental store (when those were a thing) back in 2010 when I was staying the weekend at a friends house. I didn't sleep that night. I just kept playing this game throughout the entire night and having an absolute blast. Then when I had a Xbox 360 at my own house, I picked the game up again. I probably have done about 21 playthroughs of this game at this point. The OST is feckin' phenominal. The gameplay is extremely fun, overtly violent and chaotic. And they put in so many secret little details that you just don't get in games anymore these days. The graphics definitely show their age by now, even then in 2009 when it came out they were a bit dated. But the game was amazing none the less. The Story is also very intriguing, making most of the lore and exposition optional with the introduction of the "Web of Intrigue" utilizing the gameplay loop of "Consuming" enemies and living creatures to assume their shapes, memories, and even heal from consuming them. Need to escape from military pursuit? Shapeshift your body to disguise yourself as someone else when out of sight. Or if you're feeling a little bloodlusty, shapeshift your limbs into claws, hammerfists, a whip, boost your muscle mass, or even a giant sword arm! (As depicted in the cover art.) About to die and can't wait for natural regeneration to do the job for you? Grab someone and consume them for a big chunk of healing. Truly a game of the time, and to this day, no game gives me that power fantasy itch like this game has. My ABSOLUTE FAVORITE game of all time! :D
