"Arcade Mode" plays and feels exactly like the arcade versions if that's what you want. Besides that, the features and modes unique to Rise are a lot of fun too. It runs smoothly, has a great GUI in general, all the Banya classics, quality of life improvements over the arcade game and a lot of attention to detail. If you like traditional rhythm games or PIU specifically, this is a great purchase and a very healthy way to support Andamiro. It also gets paid DLC as well as free updates now and then, which is very much appreciated.
When they announced that PIU was coming to Steam, I didn't expect it to be such a great PC adaptation. Now that I've played it for a solid amount of time, I can say that it's fun, it feels fresh, and the new soundtrack is really amazing! It's great for experienced Pump players, while also being interesting and accessible to rhythm game players who are new to the series. Pump It Up RISE deserves all the support it can get. I really hope it keeps growing and stays around for many years. Highly recommended, whether you're a longtime Pump player or just a fan of rhythm games.
Great presentation, nice music selection with some old school stuff, it's perfect for someone like me who never learned 5K, it got me into it. As mentionned by others, even if charts have been adapted to keyboard, they're still heavily based on dance pads, but that can actually be a good thing if you're someone who wants to find a good game to learn 5K or 6K. It won't teach you more advanced patterns that you might see in games like DJMAX, but I feel like it's a great introduction. Pad charts can be really fun too with the way it makes your alternate your hands and teach you some good stuff. Gimmick charts in this game are also really cool. Challenge and division modes are great at pushing you to your limits and it really helped me learn 5K fast. I have one criticism, it's the lack of early/late indication, during the game play and after playing a song, as the auto calibration in the options is not great. Took me a while to figure out my offset before I was able to pull out full perfects.
Recommended only if Pump It Up is a big part of your life, and you don't mind the "online only" part this game currently has active. There are also some changes with hold notes and how charts are structured to account for hand play (7/29 EDIT: The original arcade charts are now here with the base purchase). There are some parallels being drawn to Pump It Up M (mobile edition) that was later discontinued and shut down -- but then again, practically every mobile game did this. Pinball Arcade was delisted from mobile at one point, rendering table purchases useless until its return. The warning is justified, though. Personally, I grew up playing a few games in the series, and some of the songs were great to listen to. Yes, Beethoven Virus is there, and that (and a few others) won my favor over DDR. It wasn't until Phoenix where I branched out more, and this game partly helped with my singles/doubles climb in the arcade. Phoenix 2 was just revealed, and you'll receive greater value from this purchase and R!SE Volume 2 if there is a relevant cabinet nearby.
