So... Quartet: the other reviews are right. The character writing and overall story in this game are incredible; this is top-notch stuff that will hold your interest. If you play JRPGs primarily for story and characters, just buy this game right now. With that out of the way, Quartet is a mid-length mid-price JRPG that follows the general style of LIVE-A-LIVE, not Octopath Traveler. Octopath is specifically a game that is paying homage to LIVE-A-LIVE and the second act of Final Fantasy IV: you guys need to learn your history. The literal gameplay structure of Quartet is exactly like LIVE-A-LIVE in that you have to play each self-contain individual character chapter before progressing to a different scenario in which the cast meets up, but the specifics of how this all plays out is a significant improvement over any of the games I just mentioned. The idea of the scenario itself is genius, and this game was clearly made by people with a natural talent for writing. But as good as the story is, video games have other parts which need to be judged. Gameplay: The basic turn-based system is nothing you haven't seen before, though it has a few minor tweaks. It is a single-turn system where speed governs how many turns you get as well as their order, so speed-altering buffs matter a lot. This also means you never have to "guess" the order attacks will go in, and you can see a list of all upcoming turns in order. I prefer this system over the one in a Dragon Quest game for example. You use AP for all abilities but attacking regenerates it and defending regenerates it even faster. Later in the game, you end up with a full party and reserve party members regenerate AP for free, making it easy to use them for out-of-battle healing. You also get some tactical depth to swap them in to use powerful abilities after stockpiling AP, and swapping characters does not consume a turn: always a plus for systems like this. There's 3 difficulties if you are finding the combat too easy or too hard. Dungeon and world map design are pretty basic but not distracting or problematic, and there are a few fun little puzzles, but nothing even approaching the depth of Golden Sun. Graphics: This is the area that's easiest to criticize. While the environments themselves look pretty good, and the character sprites show a bit of detail, everything is too low-res to really let their "facial expressions" show anything. The game does not have portraits next to any of the dialogue, nor does it have emotes above their sprites a la Golden Sun, so the graphics actually hold the game back A LOT when it comes to showing emotion to accompany emotional text. It's like reading a book, you have to imagine all of the emotion because all you have to go on is text. Even worse, the actual combat animations are quite mediocre. Most of the attack animations are fine, but the spell FX are extremely simple and definitely fall flat. This game has only decent pixel art overall, and the resolution of the different types of text is not consistent. Additionally, this is the kind of game that really should have shipped with a CRT filter option of some kind, but it egregiously doesn't have one. I built my own profile using a software called ShaderGlass and that's made the game much more enjoyable. Music: Surprisingly good and deceptively high-fidelity, with different characters have wildly different genres in their segments including some very impressive free-form Jazz in Alexandra's story. The battle themes are alright, but the environment themes are where it really stands out. There's also quite a few remixes and rearrangements depending on the context, which keeps things fresh when you change perspective. This OST won't be defeating an AAA game in quality or scope, but it matches the vibe of the 16-bit games it is styled after, and that's really all it needs to do. Story: So good it's the main reason to buy the game. Conclusion: I give the game high points for everything other than graphics. With its modest length and modest price tag, it's easy to recommend to anyone who is looking for another JRPG with a good story or even just anyone who loved the LIVE-A-LIVE remake and wants more of that.

Enjoyable throwback SNES style JRPG that could've used another balance pass and better progression. A solid 4 /5 game and doesn't overstay its welcome. I've had a good time with Quartet but it was also a bit frustrating as its just on the cusp of greatness and doesn't quite get there. Still it's memorable and you will get your moneys worth. The soundtrack ranges from ho-hum to great, some of the tracks sounded like public domain music and were a bit old timey jazz era. The battle music and other themes were quite good though. The combat doesn't do anything new but it satisfies. I wish some of the debuffs were stronger or used less A/P % as it doesn't make sense to cast them most of the time. The different party members were decently balanced but Jerome is kind of a beast and outshines everyone else. The game could've been more generous with A/P % regen items towards the end, you only get a few accessories or outdated armor pieces with it. The endgame gear is decent but there wasn't enough of it, I wanted full kits to have the complete progress/power fantasy that most JRPGs let you achieve. The story is good and the writing is surprisingly serious, it covers some heavy topics including genocide, racism and so on. It wasn't overbearing and shouldn't offend anyone for those worried about today's political climate. My biggest criticism is that the game was a bit too ambitious and needed to pare things back a bit to be more focused. It also took way too long to open up and give you the airship, by the time you get it you only have 8 sidequests (some of them quite short) and less than a handful of end game locations to visit before you go into the final battle. All of that said, I still had a good time with Quartet and I put it above Sea of Stars but slightly below Chained Echoes in my "throwback JRPG games" list. Worth the time and money, memorable but just shy of greatness.

I'm really enjoying this game. The one thing I would recommend to the dev is character portraits in dialogue for at least the main cast. Other than that it's a blast.

This is absolutely a love letter to classic JRPGs - and even modern ones. From the (legally distinct) Triple Triad, to the callbacks to FF6, Chrono Trigger, and even Octopath Traveler, to the silly sidebosses (Bobby, anyone?), this game definitely hit the spot. The game has great pacing and is very easy to pick up and learn. I was able to reach max level and get all of the achievements without any major grinding on Normal difficulty. By the end of the game, there were some really powerful and cheesy combos that are really fun to execute (and I like seeing big numbers). My only real complaints come in the endgame, and specifically only in terms of the hints for where to go for the sidequests. This might just be a me problem, but I felt that some of the hints for where to go were a bit too obscure. But it did get me to explore the world thoroughly, so this might just be a feature. I would suggest adding more detailed hints (maybe make them cost a bunch of VAL to obtain so players still have to earn it). I would also like additional hints in-game for things like Arcana (at least telling you how many players there are left to play or the number of players in each world). This is more because I'm a nutty completionist and like doing EVERYTHING. I would absolutely recommend this game to anyone who enjoys playing JRPGs. EDIT: Oh, and the interactions with the Devs I've chatted with in Twitch chats have been great! Keep up the great work!

Final Fantasy 6 is one of my favorite games of all time and so far Quartet ticks all the boxes of "awesome spiritual successor" to it.
