Part railroad management sim and part automation optimizer, Railgrade is in a league of its own. It supports a few different play styles and has lots to sink its teeth into. Some reasons you'll fall in love with this game: ⭐ The tight level design keeps you coming back for more. There are two campaigns to play through, which are both full to bursting with interesting levels that challenge you to think and build in new ways. Levels start out taking just 15 minutes, and slowly build in complexity until you have an hour or slightly more to win the Rank S score. Whether you find that bite-sized levels help build your interest in a game, or love a longer challenge that you can sink your teeth into, there's plenty here for you. There is also a flexible sandbox mode if campaign challenges aren't your jam. ⭐ The plot and concept is different from any other railroad management sim. It's interesting and political, and definitely motivated me to keep going. It's also optional. If you don't like plot text, you can simply fast forward through it and get to the levels. ⭐ Play mechanics are streamlined. The building tools are intuitive and simple enough that you don't need to spend ages learning them. I tend to stall out on games with too many complex tools. If I need to leave the game and watch videos about how to play it at a basic level, it has lost me. Railgrade never touches that. Gameplay is simple to start and hard to master, letting you focus your learning on how to optimize your track systems. ⭐ The music is phenomenal! This game really scratches an itch that I've had for a long time. However, nothing is perfect. If I could wave a magic wand and change anything about it, I would wish for: - A greater diversity in assets, especially landscape assets. Just for a little visual diversity. - Train routing logic mechanisms one step more complex than what we currently have. Even just "If this train is empty, do this, else do that" would be great. - Slightly improved English/American localization. There are a few places where the translation sounds... a little funky. I understand it's a Japanese game, but it clearly has a big English-speaking following. This would be nice to have.

The core game is really a series of puzzles, which isn't quite what I was hoping for. I wanted more of an open-world game where the world grows and adapts as I connect it. Still, the rail logistics puzzles were interesting enough to carry the game for a good while. But only get this if you want to solve builder/logistics puzzles.

Many people see "TRAINS" and think of openTTD or Transport Fever 2. Honestly, I fall into this group as well. But as many reviews already stated, it has nothing to do with those games, except trains. You won't be sitting in one of your vehicles and see a beautiful world unfold. Most of the negative reviews stem from a misunderstanding of the concept, which is a shame. It is a puzzle game that requires you to reach certain goals on a timer. The faster you are, the higher your rank. It can be quite stressful, but the levels are extremely well made. You have an initial phase where the timer doesn't run and you can freely salvage. That's where you make your gameplan. As soon as the first train runs, it's GO-time! I won the S-rank by one second. I lost the S-rank by one second. Joy and misery go hand in hand. But it's one of those games, if I lose, my head starts spinning and looking for holes in the gameplan. And then I'll have to try again! Not many games give me this trigger. Very satisfying!

10/10 Railroad game. Absolutely love it. It hits the sweet spot between a railroad themed puzzle game (see Railbound) and a true railroad sim (see Railway Empire 1 and 2). I'm not a fan of Railbound because, like most puzzle games, there's a single "read my mind" answer, often not intuitive. I Do like the Railway Empire games, though often the levels are long multiday challenges. Railgrade gives you a lot a decisions to make in a short period of time, so you are constantly thinking and constructing strategically. There are one or a couple defined goals to pass each level. Levels are very sandboxy - can be solved in any number of ways with your own creative designs. It's likely your solution will look nothing like other player's. And if you are like me, you will turn off the timer, so you can build at your own pace and not stress. People that complain that there are no signals or other things are missing the point. Learn to construct solutions without these things. Again, it's not a sim, but looks like one. I'm only roughly halfway through the base game at around 25 hours, but have appreciated the challenge, and know levels are only getting harder. Creators recently released a new free campaign included with the base game, which most companies would have made paid DLC. This is the train game I have been looking for. Thank you to the developers. Looking forward to your next game.
