Interesting game, could have some equipment on the Ratatan to buff the team or increasing heath with some trade off stats. Not necessary to be all permanent buff with upgrade.

Having messed with the trilogy now for well over hundreds of hours mixed across the PSP, PC, and even my attempts to run it on PS3 through modding -- not PS4, waited for Replay (and didn't own one until late last year, not long before Replay released, lol) -- this is the absolute best way the series formula could've improved. There's extremely little nostalgia-insistence, and instead raw finesse in the devs truly being veterans. They are NOT rusty. Patapon gives an immense feeling of muscle memory that, once familiarized, it immediately sticks to you, and it's even more present if you already have knowledge in marching band, playing instruments, etc. Even if just only a slight boost at the absolute best, the rhythm (no pun intended) the games put you in is second to none, and my own marching experience, again, has helped. Only slightly, but still a greatly present benefit. Anyhow, my own experience aside: Ratatan is a beautiful advancement in the formula that doesn't ride on nostalgia (although the single eye 'notes' are adorable), but instead shows the devs stuck to their guns and revised it well enough to carry its rhythm and instant complexity so insanely well. Just like Patapon in the middle of a dense fight: you'll *know* when you make a mistake as you're hitting a given command, and the same applies here. However, unlike Patapon, it all only applies if it hits YOU, the Ratatan. I love the Cobuns, but they're realistically infinite. If you yourself can avoid attacks, if you've played Touhou, this game's straight for you. The fact this rhythm, rogue RTS-RPG hybrid (as I've dubbed it anyhow) adds a potential bullet hell is utterly insane, and only in the best ways. What I feel the game only comes short in is the lacking of a similar function to the Tree of Life in Patapon, where you can have different 'breeds' dictate different fighting styles, where that's now in the hands of the game's luck. I had the hardest sex in my life thanks to this game. However, that very much makes a roguelike into a roguelike, getting the right seed and letting it rip. Being able to customize each Cobun into such a nuanced matter would, unfortunately, defeat the strength in what the devs have added, and maybe could've leaned too much into Patapon itself. Could be cool, but I'm unsure of how to toss it up exactly! I endlessly recommend Ratatan if any of these apply: - You like rhythm games. - You like roguelikes. - You like bullet hells. This is an 'easy' one, but there's so much more than dodging. - You like Patapon. There is no other way to say it: Patapon and its devs are in amazing hands, and their own hands haven't aged a bit. Try this out when you get the chance!

I played Patapon 1,2,3. This game is not Patapon 4 and that's good. I feel you have more freedom while following the beat and the roguelite part adds lots of fun and replayability. A bit childish sometimes, funny if you think about the people who came here from Patapon 1 (2008) because most of them are 20+ years old now. Only thing i did not like is that some attacks from mini boss or big enemies are not synchronized with the beat, and they hit you mid beat.

I have played Patapon 1,2,3 several times over, on both PSP and emulators. Easily thousands of hours into the Patapon series. Do NOT go into this game expecting Patapon 4. Ratatan is, simply put, the opposite of Patapon. Patapon from the beginning was a more melancholy, rugged, and combat-focused rhythm game. The story was focused on reviving the long-forgotten Patapon tribe and their struggles to regain their strength and glory. Ratatan on the other hand is a bubbly, bright, and single-run focused game. It seems like Risk of Rain and Patapon smashed together with brighter tones. The music is very reminiscent of the "circus" tracks from the Patapon series. It certainly brings back the childhood memories of playing encapsulating rhythm game in the early 2000s. My chief complaint is that Ratatan seems a bit... childish? I would urge Ratatan Arts to consider their target audience: Patapon players. Since Patapon 1 released 2008, almost 20 years ago (damn), their target audience has now grown up to become adults. They're no longer kids with PSPs. I think they missed the mark on targeting that audience. Other than that, I truly believe if you played the Patapon series, you'll like Ratatan.
