Yeah my patapon brain kept doing 4 beats instead of the 3 like the game is showing me it's kinda hard to break old habits at least the fever mode isn't too punishing but other than its not bad for early access Edit: Okay so after a very liberal 30+ hours I can say the devs definitely havent lost their charm

Never have a chance to play Patapon even though I want to, due to sh*tty childhood (Asian parent that think game is kind of addicted dr*g and act like I committed third degree m*rder when my grade Drop from A+ to B) now I grew up have a job have my own money, I jump into this game at instant (plan to try Patapon as well). And oh boy It's not disappointed me! Recommend this game to my friends to play together, and since then we, all almost 30 years old dudes all share one brain cell chanting RATA-RATA-RATATAN! non-stop.

So, I heard of the game 'Patapon' about 3 years ago or so. It was the first time I heard or seen something like it. However it looked funny and unique in its own way, so I watched some videos on it. Through that, I found out Ratatan was being made and how its the spiritual successor to Patapon. I played this game for a little bit and I adore it. Its totally not something I would normally play. I tend to like strategy games or city builders or rogue lite games. Ratatan being a rhythm game which Im normally kinda bad at should kinda mean that I would have no love for this game. But I played it for nearly 3 hours now and Im heavily inclined to play more. Side note: Going through some tough times. Normally when Im upset the last thing I want is happy children singing in my ear and a bunch of chipper bright colours on my screen. Ratatan however turned my frown upside down rather quick and I just sit here bouncing to the beats. Hope this game can keep my interest for a long time to come. TLDR: Something fun to pick up and just play for a little while. Might burn you out on it pretty fast perhaps, but it has a lot of charm and a unique style.

I don't write Steam reviews, but I'll make an exception for this game, as I'm a big Patapon fan and I want to support it. First of all, I recommend trying out any of the Patapon games before trying this one, as it's sort of a spiritual successor to them. I'll write my review assuming it's being read by someone who has played the series before. This game deviates from Patapon by adding roguelite elements. Instead of going through a selection of levels, you go through stages in order with multiple "rooms" where you can select the reward you'll get in the next room when you clear it and get upgrades for your run (called Ratakarutas) and different materials, similar to Hades. When your run is over, you go back to a lobby where you can spend these materials on meta progression, such as permanent upgrades and equipment for your army, and then you start all over again from stage one. One important thing to point out is that, just like in Patapon, your meta progression is a deciding factor in your runs. In Patapon, if you want to succeed, you have to build a strong army, as you WILL be taking damage from enemies and bosses no matter what; you can help your army by playing well, but if you are severely underpowered, you will most likely fail (e.g. when going against Patapon 3 enraged bosses). Here the situation is the same. This is different from how most roguelite games handle meta progression, usually giving players a reasonable chance to beat a run as long as they are good enough, so if you were expecting this game to be different from Patapon in that regard, you will be disappointed. It's still as grindy as Patapon. Another important thing is that in here you actually take direct control of a character, a Ratatan. You basically take control of Hatapon, as the only way to lose a run is for your Ratatan to die, and you can't do much with it other than to play music for your army to give them orders. The other members of your army, the Cobuns, will revive shortly after they die with some of their maximum HP. You move your Ratatan independently of your army, which I actually find to be a really nice addition, as the game usually takes advantage of this (especially on bosses and special enemies) and forces you to dodge attacks between orders, giving you something engaging to do between them other than just stare at your army. The music is absolutely amazing, and the art is really pretty, though they both are fairly different than what you'd expect from Patapon, so they might not be to everyone's taste. I suggest you look them up online and judge for yourself as they are important aspects of these games. The way you play the notes is also different, but nothing too crazy. Other than that, the game is pretty similar to Patapon. If you're a fan of the series like me and are really craving more, you'll probably be satisfied with this, but don't expect something of much higher quality. Something to note is that it's on Early Access as of the time I'm writing this review and doesn't have all the content promised on the Kickstarter (in fact, there's very little content right now compared to a Patapon game) or all the polish it needs to really feel complete, so have that in mind if you're considering picking it up right now. Here's a list of things I wish they would add in the future (some of them are already promised, but anyway): * More variety in general for runs. I'm already used to repeating content since it was common in Patapon, but that game still had a big pool of levels, enemies, bosses, and special encounters, so I think it's only fair this one has at least as much content since it essentially makes you repeat all of it every time. * More and better Ratakarutas. There's a fair amount of them, but a lot are only effective if you are able to inflict a particular ailment on enemies, which is not all the time. Basically, I want more Ratakarutas like "If your Ratatan has more than 75% HP, you do more damage", which can be useful in a lot of scenarios, rather than ones like "Enemies are weakened if they are on fire" which are only useful in specific scenarios. * Better meta progression. Right now it's a little barebones for being so important, so I hope it's expanded in some way (especially the equipment for Cobuns; I like equipment :D). * More things for the Ratatans. Pretty much anything to make them stand out from each other more than their passives. I know they will eventually have unique skills, but I don't think that alone will be enough to make them as exciting to play as the Uberhero in Patapon 3. Maybe bring back class skills/set skills? Also, something minor, but they really need to add a way to slow down the dialogue. I can't read anything with how fast it goes lol.

I have played Patapon 1,2,3 several times over, on both PSP and emulators. Easily thousands of hours into the Patapon series. Do NOT go into this game expecting Patapon 4. Ratatan is, simply put, the opposite of Patapon. Patapon from the beginning was a more melancholy, rugged, and combat-focused rhythm game. The story was focused on reviving the long-forgotten Patapon tribe and their struggles to regain their strength and glory. Ratatan on the other hand is a bubbly, bright, and single-run focused game. It seems like Risk of Rain and Patapon smashed together with brighter tones. The music is very reminiscent of the "circus" tracks from the Patapon series. It certainly brings back the childhood memories of playing encapsulating rhythm game in the early 2000s. My chief complaint is that Ratatan seems a bit... childish? I would urge Ratatan Arts to consider their target audience: Patapon players. Since Patapon 1 released 2008, almost 20 years ago (damn), their target audience has now grown up to become adults. They're no longer kids with PSPs. I think they missed the mark on targeting that audience. Other than that, I truly believe if you played the Patapon series, you'll like Ratatan.
