It is clear to me that the perception of this game is going to be very different depending on whether you are an old school player of Wing Commander Privateer or anyone else. Calling Rebel Galaxy Outlaw a spiritual successor or a tribute to Privateer does not cut it, the similarities are stronger. This game does everything to make a fan of Privateer feel right at home. Having played Privateer several times over the decades I developed small routines, like starting a new game by immediately selling the laser and missile launcher to buy mass driver and torpedoes. I was amazed to discover that I could do exactly the same here, and even the layout of each screen was similar. The static camera angles of various locations are just like they were in Privateer, the merchant and mercenary guilds are so close to a replica that it feels funny, and many of the phrases and sound effects are nearly identical. It also does not fail to reproduce one thing that I loved about the Privateer the most: every ship you purchase has a unique cockpit. Buying a new one becomes exciting, like moving to a new home. This makes it possible to love or hate specific ships based on the layout and the field of view alone. And when the damage to the ship is reflected by instruments blowing up, it can feel personal. The controls may feel just as clunky as in the old game but the assist is really good at smoothing them out. Playing with a controller, I found myself using the assist but constantly correcting it manually, and it is really satisfying this way. I maneuver fast to land a good hit, but with the assist active, which helps to not overshoot or lose track of the target. All this makes Rebel Galaxy Outlaw a better sequel to Privateer than the Darkening was. Well, except for the story. The first game had an interesting atmosphere, being set behind the lines of a larger conflict, a war with aliens, and the second one was pretty much a movie in disguise. Here the setting feels more like a western, perhaps a nod to Firefly fans, but a bit shallow. There is no flying to unexplored systems with barely enough fuel to discover ancient mysteries, neither is there a great acting. This is where I feel the game lacks something. But, hey, at least I can buy and build up my own station!

Bounty hunting and civil work is less profitable in this game, so I am forced to hijack and blow up minimum wage space truckers for their measly haul, and uneventfully rendering their children into fatherless space orphans that may end up recruited by the space pirates as cannon fodder for future incursions that'll repeat the same cycle.

It's alright. It's really Privateer 1 with friendly aliens, and with Pool and gambling minigames at the LZ and a bit more personality. The graphics in space are somewhere between now and 1995. I'm sure there's some stuff they're doing you couldn't do in 1995. Maybe even 2005. Makes up for it with consistent style though. I feel like there could be more ship variations and at the moment I can't get into the grind so I'm going to play something else for a while. +You can literally paint/ graffiti your own ship in game with a Photoshop like app. Never seen that in a game. Buy if you're itching to play Privateer 1 again but with better (yet trying to be the same) graphics. Buy on sale.

An ADHD dogfight sim in a sea of autism space sims I may have been the ideal audience for this game. I loved Wing Commander Privateer growing up, so I love that this game took so many of the best parts of that and made something fresh. Rebel Galaxy Outlaw: + is not dry. It has bright colours, humour and fast, fun gameplay. + has big, crunchy, satisfying explosions, blaster and bullets. This is so often missing from space sims + has the auto-face feature which has changed space sims for me. + has a player character who isn't just a generic dude or women. Juno is middle-aged, caustic and unimpressionable and I love her. + has TEXTURE. I love how tactile the cockpit feels. + has a soundtrack, but I just loaded in a bunch of tracks I like, and it's fun hearing my tunes come on the radio. - is repetitive. The dogfights and missions don't vary very much. I don't mind this because I like yelling 'LET'S DANCE MOTHERF*CKERS' and kicking on the afterburner and emptying my magazine into a pirate's six (that is not innuendo I do actually mean murdering pirates) - doesn't flesh out Juno enough. I'm really rooting for her and she deserves more depth to her character. I love this game. Maybe it's the ADHD space sim and it's up against all the autism space sims. But whatever it's doing, I'm finding that few titles match it for sheer explosive fun.

I jumped into this after like a 100 hour FreeSpace series binge and after remapping the controls I instantly felt home. I have not played the original first game yet so that is why I think it is not as horrible as the reviews make it out to be but there are definitely some weak points. Here are my points below in no particular order. What I liked: - difficulty without all the aim assist was decent enough when it comes to pure 1v1 dogfights - unique visual style - amazing soundtrack - cool main character - runs well - nice mini games in the bar, I spent quite a few hours with just playing pool and dice poker - flipping off enemies and trash talking through comms - you can have your own station - companions What I disliked: - the star systems are too big to the point they do not make sense, you can skip travel but even with that I felt it was tedious to go through several systems - barely anything to do, missions seem varied at first but there are a lot of repeat offenders with barely anything different yet being labelled as something else - nothing visually unique about the star systems, like if you played Freelancer and saw a mostly red background you knew you were in Bretoina, there is none of that here, the last system you go to is exactly like the first one you start in - your own station is heavily underutilized, the game does not really go out of its way to tell you this is even a thing - enemies sort of scale with you defeating the sense of progression, I was able to farm credits for end game gear in the starting system and meet end game enemies -companions have some side missions but there is not much point and most of them are useless if you call them to help you - main story felt like it just ended randomly without properly resolving the root of the conflict - absolutely abysmal way for missions to trigger into their next phase, I could do 10 system jumps without triggering anything, sometimes I got it after just going near a station - the fastest ships are exclusive to the enemies I did not even notice I wrote a wall of text, oh well, it is ok to play through once, it is really sad that the developer was literally bullied out of game making.
