Recettear is a bit of a liminal fever dream...a game that, to me, is iconic in its simplicity. What you see on the Store page is what you get: there's the VN driving the narrative, the Dungeons to gather the items, and the Shop to sell those items and simultaneously gear up the adventurers. Nothing in particular about Recettear is special, but you won't find another Shop Simulator / RPG title that hits quite like this one. The dialog is witty and will evoke a chuckle from time to time, the graphics are exactly what's shown on the page and nothing more, and the gameplay loop is smooth and, to me, ramps up to rather difficult, but I'm also not very good at this sort of Action RPG. Should you buy it? Of course! This game is a treasure in gaming and deserves more support, if nothing else. Capitalism, Ho!
If you ever wanted a "open a shop" game with some adventuring on the side, this is by far the best of its kind, which is kind of funny considering there has been dozen of attempts at copying Recettear, but really none of its clones have managed to nail that very satisfying feel that only Recettear brings when you sell stuff and start profiting up, despite its age and more basic graphics. But maybe its due its age and respective restrictions which makes the whole game feel way more immersive and real, while staying fun, with a respectable amount of challenge & comfort, since, you know, real shops are do indeed constrained by space & time & ever mood changing clients, unlike its modern clones that just overdo on the cozy with no substance, or ramp up on very immersion breaking "modern" optimizations.
A delightfully addictive mix of shop management simulator and action RPG dungeon crawler. Its gameplay loop of haggling with customers by day and exploring dungeons for loot creates a surprisingly satisfying rhythm, all wrapped in charming chibi visuals and lighthearted humor. Despite its cute presentation, the game has a notoriously brutal difficulty curve, especially the massive final debt payment, which took me 3 loops to finally overcome. Thankfully, the forgiving New Game Plus system makes repeated runs feel rewarding rather than frustrating since you keep your levels, upgrades, and inventory after failure. While the dungeon combat can become repetitive later on, being able to skip cutscenes makes replaying fast and enjoyable. Recette’s iconic line, “Capitalism, ho!” never stopped making me laugh and perfectly captures the game’s chaotic, cozy charm.
Game 167 of my backlog Starts out as what feels like nothing but a children's game that seems extremely easy, until you get to the third week and things RAMP UP. Then you find out you can loop (somewhat potentially mandatory. I'm unsure) and start the whole process over again except you keep your items and levels. This does make it significantly more manageable. Not always easier though. Lots to learn unless you look up a beginners guide (I totally did)
