You hear a lot of great things about this game. I've never really cared much about cowboys or horses, so I never picked it up. Then it went on sale and I thought, "Well, maybe it would be a good idea to play something that doesn't fit my interests at all." After the first two hours, I genuinely thought I had wasted 15€, but I kept playing. And boy, was I wrong. RDR2 might be one of the best - if not THE best - story-driven game I've ever played. More importantly, it's the game that taught me how to enjoy video games again The pacing feels incredibly slow at the beginning, but makes perfect sense when you look back on it. You have to let go of the urge to get things done and check off quests one after another. You don't rush through the main quests to finish the story. You're exploring the world and the characters. You simply exist in this world. And that's something you really have to be willing to embrace. Don't get me wrong, the main story itself is fantastic, but honestly, I don't think it's what makes this game so special. The real magic happens between the main missions: in the small encounters, the random people you meet along the road, the places you stumble across and all the little moments. At times this game almost felt like therapy. It's a weird mix of brutality and cozy game - and somehow, both sides fit together perfectly. I would have never guessed that I could feel so comfortable, so much at ease in a game like this. The characters are another huge part of why I love this game with every fibre of my being . You might hate some of the characters when you first meet them. But the more time you spend with them, the more you understand that they're just people. They have their flaws, they make mistakes, they can be frustrating as hell - but you'll love them for exactly what they are: human. And then there's Arthur Morgan , our protagonist. You're not the hero of this story. You're not the villain, either. You're just some guy trying to live his life . He's not perfect. He makes terrible decisions, hurts people, gets angry, but he's also kind, caring, funny and thoughtful. An incredible main character you can grow alongside. If a game can make me finish a 67-hour playthrough and immediately think, " I want to do that again, but so much slower ," I think that says everything. Also, this game might be for the horse girlies. Started it not caring about horses at all, ended it as a horse girl myself.
There are some games you play, and then they end. There are others where the credits roll, and they remain as a fond memory. But very few games stay with you long after they are over. For me, “Red Dead Redemption 2” was never just a game. It was a world where I truly felt I was living. In this world, I didn’t just complete missions; I gathered memories. I rode long distances on horseback at sunrise, moved silently through the rain, and sat by the campfire at night, listening to the sounds of that world. The game’s greatest achievement wasn't just its graphics or its massive open world. Its true success lay in how it turned small moments into unforgettable ones. The stories of people I met on the road, conversations with my campmates, vistas that appeared when I least expected them... My most cherished memories were hidden within the small details the game didn't force me to notice. And then, there was Arthur Morgan... Arthur wasn't just a character I controlled. I journeyed alongside him; I made mistakes, felt regret, and changed. His wasn't the story of a perfect hero. It was the story of a man bearing the weight of his past, confronting his mistakes, and striving to do what was right even at the very end of his life. I’ve played many games over the years. Some entertained me; others left a mark. But very few made me want to stop and watch a sunset, listen to the sound of the rain, or take a screenshot just to hold onto the moment. Because “Red Dead Redemption 2” isn't just a game you play; it’s an experience you feel. Years will pass. Graphics will improve, and bigger games will be released. But some experiences are simply irreplaceable. Because some games aren't just played; they become a part of your life. Usually, in long-form narrative games, I stick to the main storyline and try to enjoy it like a TV series or movie, but in this game, there’s story even in the newspapers, man. The people who said there are hundreds of subtle details were absolutely right; catching those little nuances is genuinely satisfying. You really have to pick up and read the newspapers found in the cities—they usually appear after you complete missions. Also, make sure to explore the mountains, rocky areas, and forests; you’ll come across people in need, so help them out. Seeing them again later on gives you such a profound, heartwarming, and proud feeling—it’s an incredible sensation. For instance, at one point—I won't give away spoilers—I collapsed and lost consciousness due to certain events; when I came to, I saw a family I had helped earlier. As I tried to leave, they calmed me down, saying, "You saved our lives back there; let us help you now." This is Red Dead Redemption 2. Masterpiece.
Red Dead Redemption 2 started as a complete mystery to me. I had never played the first game, barely knew any of the characters, and the three previous times I tried to start it, I quit during the snowy opening hours. The reason was simple: the Western genre has never been one of my favorites, and games in the style of GTA never really appealed to me either. This game seemed to combine both of those things, which made it difficult for me to get invested. What changed was a friend who kept insisting that I give it a real chance. Eventually, I did. I started my journey full of doubts, expecting to drop it once again. Instead, those doubts slowly disappeared as I became immersed in what the game truly is: a work of art disguised as a video game. Every hour revealed more of the incredible care and attention poured into its world, its characters, and its storytelling. By the time I finished it, I understood why so many people consider it one of the greatest games ever made. World & Atmosphere: Even as someone who isn’t particularly interested in the Wild West, I found myself completely absorbed by the setting. The game constantly teaches you something about the era, whether it’s the conflicts over land, the changing nature of civilization, or the everyday struggles of people trying to survive in a world that is leaving them behind. It feels authentic, lived-in, and endlessly fascinating to explore. More importantly, the world feels alive. Not in the way games often advertise, but genuinely alive. People remember your actions, conversations feel natural, and every location seems to have its own story waiting to be discovered. It is one of the few worlds where I truly felt like my presence mattered. Music: The soundtrack is exceptional. Every song appears at exactly the right moment, whether during a quiet ride across the wilderness, a tense shootout, or one of the game’s many emotional scenes. Even now, hearing Unshaken is enough to give me chills and immediately bring back memories of my journey. Storytelling: This is where the game truly separates itself from most of the industry. The amount of love and effort poured into both the main story and the side content is impossible to ignore. The game constantly finds ways to surprise you, whether through moments of tension, tragedy, reflection, or hope. Some of the most memorable moments come from situations that initially seem insignificant. A simple side quest can suddenly become deeply emotional, while a random encounter can leave you thinking about it long after you’ve finished playing. Few games manage to create that kind of impact consistently. Characters: This is where I have to make the biggest point of all. Arthur is one of the best-written protagonists I have ever experienced in any video game. I don’t want to spoil anything, but the fact that you help shape the kind of person he becomes throughout the story makes him feel incredibly personal. There were countless moments where I found myself thinking something during a conversation at camp, only for Arthur to express the exact same thought moments later. That level of humanization is what makes him special. Eventually, you stop thinking of him as a video game character and start seeing him as a real person with beliefs, flaws, struggles, and dreams. The supporting cast is equally impressive. Whether it’s the charisma of Dutch, the journey of John, the determination of Sadie, the wisdom of Hosea, the calm nature of Charles, or the unsettling presence of Micah, every major character brings something meaningful to the experience. Final Thoughts: Very few games reach the narrative heights achieved by Red Dead Redemption 2. It is the kind of experience that stays with you long after the credits roll. You don’t simply finish the game and move on. You spend days, weeks, and sometimes even months thinking about the people you met, the choices you made, and the journey you experienced. I started this game expecting to dislike it. I finished it convinced that it is a masterpiece.
