This game is the exact reason why Steam desperately needs a “Neutral” recommendation option. On one hand, this is Red Dead Redemption, one of the greatest open-world masterpieces in gaming history, finally playable on PC. The port itself is excellent, running smoothly and offering incredible nostalgia. If you have never played it before, you will easily get your money's worth out of the brilliant story and characters. On the other hand, Rockstar is charging $70 for a 16-year-old game that features zero graphical overhauls, no new content, and completely stripped-out multiplayer. It is a must-play title, but the corporate greed behind the pricing is a tough pill to swallow. Unless you are entirely new to the game, put this on your wishlist and wait for a special.
Red Dead Redemption is a great game, but the PC release is not worth $50. The story is amazing, the characters are memorable, and it's still one of the best western games ever made. However, this is a game that originally came out in 2010, and the improvements don't justify the full price. If you've never played it before, it's worth picking up on sale. At $50, I'd wait for a discount.
miss this era of rockstar where they released a full game with good DLCs alongside it. 2000 to 2010 was a special era of video games. edit: just beat undead nightmare, why couldnt we have gotten something like this as DLC in red dead 2? with the creative department rockstar has at their disposal they easily could've given us cowboys vs aliens maybe robots as a spinoff with all the ufo references and that one robot that killed its creator but of course not, this kind of rockstar games will be dearly missed.
Red Dead Redemption is a really unique experience to go back to after playing its sequel. Compared to Red Dead Redemption 2, this feels more like a novella shorter, tighter, and more focused in how it tells its story. The tone is different too. Where the sequel leans heavily into character relationships and slow burn storytelling, this one feels harsher and more direct closer in spirit to something like Blood Meridian. It’s more about inevitability and the fading of the Old West than companionship or long character arcs. That focus works in its favor, giving the narrative a clear drive and making it feel more concise and purposeful. Mission design is a highlight. There’s a lot of variety, and many of them feel memorable thanks to the game’s more eccentric cast of characters. You’re constantly meeting strange, unpredictable people, which adds personality and keeps things from feeling repetitive. The pacing also benefits from the shorter length there’s less filler, and it doesn’t overstay its welcome the way larger open-world games sometimes do. Mexico is another standout section. It brings a completely different atmosphere, with its own tone, music, and sense of place. It’s one of the most memorable parts of the game, and honestly, it makes you wish that Red Dead Redemption 2 had done more with that region in its own world. That said, going back to it, you can feel its age in some areas. Movement and shooting aren’t as refined as the sequel, and the world isn’t as dense or interactive. But at the same time, there’s something refreshing about how focused it is. It doesn’t get lost in systems or realism it just delivers a strong, straightforward experience. You can also see a shift in Rockstar’s storytelling here. This feels like a turning point after this, their games became more cinematic, more detailed, and more character driven. Red Dead Redemption sits right in that transition, blending classic open world design with a more modern narrative approach.
This is NOT a remaster. It's the original game with 4K, HDR, DLSS, and FSR support. The game is as great as it ever was and feels amazing with mouse and keyboard. That said, this should NOT be priced at $50. I got it on sale for $25 and would have never bought it at full price. If you are someone who has never experienced this game before, this would be the best and "definitive" way of playing it. But $50 for a game from 2010 is absurd IMO. Catch it on sale.
