Warning: This comment comes from a pirate game addict, Sid Meier's Pirates superfan. I had seen Rise of Piracy a while ago in the first streams of the solo dev, John. He is a passionate guy! The game itself wishes to be something like Blood and Gold: Caribbean (M&B but pirate) and Port Royale. Has an action and an RTS perspective in combat. Action needs work. RTS works better IMHO for now at least. Now, is it rough around the edges and somewhat clunky? Yes. Is it enjoyable AS HELL for someone who's into pirate games? oh HELL YEAH! I will personally update my review when more progress is done but for now, at this price it is probably a YES if you are a fan of pirate games. It wishes to be (in my mind at least) something like Sid Meier's Pirates but more "serious". Needs work. Solo dev is working crazy fast, squashing bugs etc. I suggest to get this on this price because it has already stuff to do. I hope development continues and we can have a gem we NEED!

Let me start with the fact that i'm always suspicious of EA games, I have refunded plenty due to the disappointment of unplayable games and false promotion. Being a fan of this style of game, Sid Meier's Pirates, Pirates of the Burning Seas, Naval Action I was hopeful when I came across Rise of Piracy. I held off buying for a few days, read comments, reviews and YouTube videos. Having now been playing the game my conclusion is: This is a good EA game, there is a'lot to do in the game and ship battles are my favourite part followed by shelling island towns and then sending in the troops to conquer them. I have not really got into trading yet as that is not my play style. This is what I consider proper early access to be, there is a broad game available here to play at this stage and its a'lot of fun. There is room for improvement of course but that's the nature of this game being early access. Addressing the room for early access improvement: Having joined the discord, the Dev is very active there and open to suggestions. These suggestions I have seen have made it into the many updates already released. If the updates continue this really could be an amazing game, the foundations are there. So rarely for me I can say I can say with confidence to recommended "Rise Of Piracy".

This guy made what Skull and Bones could only dream to be. You can also terrorize natives and kill the french. Game doesn't crash like newly launched AAA games. Sound design is solid but can blank out if firing too many guns. Absolute Cinema to send 2000 guys straight into the enemy capital while you turn it into a crater with hundreds of cannons firing at the same time. Price is absolutely worth it for the dumb fun you can have.

Alot of jank still, but that is to be expected with a single dev EA game. They also are patching like crazy with all the bug reports coming in so that is promising. I can see the goal and I admire the work put in so far, this game is trying to do a lot and I hope it succeeds. The gameplay is engaging and I can see myself playing this for hundreds of hours once its finished / polished alot. I did have to turn off the music about 15 minutes in because its honestly so cringe it will drive you nuts imo. Even so, shame on you heartless scumbags for giving this 5 year solo project negative reviews on day one, atleast give them time to patch. Its only $15, that is less than the cost of a fast food meal these days. If you cant afford $15 on a game that is obviously not finished "as it has been so labeled" then don't buy it, why are you even investing in EA games if your that broke. For gods sake don't bash it for not being done on day one of early access.

Having just finished all the tutorials and played a bit of the campaign, I can say this game is a breath of fresh air for the pirate genre as a whole. The fact that the developer has added options to tilt the cannons further up or down to aim exactly where you want, adjust how much gunpowder you pack to increase or decrease shot distance, and even change how the cannons fire so you can gauge your range with a single shot is impressive. When was the last time a pirate game had any of these features??????? I think some reviewers and people on the forums were expecting AAA-quality gameplay, which is insane considering you’re buying access to a game that’s still early in development (which means it isn’t finished. Shocking, I know). This is a passion project made by a single developer. I've been following this game for years on my wishlist and i wish him all the success, because by god we need a good pirate game and we aren't likely to get one soon unless the Caribbean Legend's games are your pace. The naval combat feels good and is honestly a blast; it's up there with Caribbean Legend for the ship fights. I’m glad the giant fireballs from the cannons were removed at some point. The controls are tight and don’t force you to micromanage everything. It strikes a good balance between being fun while still taking itself seriously, without going full arcade. There are also RTS-style controls if you want a bird’s-eye view of your ship instead of handling everything in third person. Fighting other ships felt impactful. I was amazed at how loud the cannons were from a ship of the line a few kilometers from my ship as the balls whizzed past, just barely missing me. Land combat is obviously janky, with very little in terms of model animations, but I’m aware that it’s not the current focus and will be improved later on. The land cannons actually made me laugh when I saw how slowly the cannonballs travel. I also enjoyed the open world introduced in the tutorial (I don’t think it’s the same world you normally play on, but I could be wrong). I like that treasure hunting is included. Another feature I really appreciate is being able to visit outposts of hostile nations without them immediately attacking you. Instead, the game gives you a warning that you shouldn’t stay too long because the port is hostile. And the best part of it all, still a better game than Port Royale 4, lmao.
