I have played over 200 hours in this game. This game is leagues better than Salt 1. This game is not SoT. It isn't like SoT in ANY capacity. I have over 5000 hours in SoT. I know what I'm talking about. THIS IS NOT LIKE SOT AT ALL. It isn't like Windrose, either. If you're coming into this game thinking it will be like that, you best turn around right now. This game is NOT for you. This game is not for players that want high octane, instant gratification. This game is a slow burner, it builds slowly. It's depth isn't known right off the bat. There are builds in this game, gear has stats and unique talents and that plays into your skills. But it has all the old trappings of that kind of system as well. You have to level it up, you have to build multiple types of the same gear to get the talents you want, you have to grind up your skills to get the points to make your skills better , etc. Where this game REALLY excels is looting and exploration. You build your own map. You mark it and you tag it. it is a bit more advanced since Salt but I think it is for the better. Salt you literally had to put the island size in, Salt 2 does it for you. Hurray no more running around spamming the Sextant until you hit a new quadrant on a 4x4 island! IMHO, they need to lean more heavily into this aspect in their marketing. This is a huge draw for me. The map is procedure generated based on your world seed. After 20x20, which is where the "main" game takes place, the training wheels on that, come off. There are many secret walls and hidey places for loot. Yes a lot of it is used for crafting. There's almost a generous amount of weight limits here. You can practically carry everything. 60 health potions of basic healing weigh like 6 pounds as an example. People who say the game is DIRECTIONLESS are somewhat correct. The game will give you maps that have coordinates, you mark the waypoint and you go. This game is not hand holdey, you are an explorer. Get your ass out there and explore. Follow where the quests tell you to go, don't dilly dally on every single island along the way. Mark them to come back to later. Some stuff on islands you can't even handle at your current gear level. Your boat is your mobile base. You are meant to build up your boats over time. You are meant to build the best ship in the game. You will do much crafting from your boat. You have your storage and your crafting nodes here. You can also decorate your boat. You'll have to buy/loot the recipes first but once you get a nice reptoire of them, you can make your boat your own. Co-Op for this game is perfectly fine for a very small indie studio. It ain't like other games though. Some loot is instanced, others is not. Keys in particular are not. CoOp was not built in mind for this game, wasn't in the first one either. It was added on, that's why it feels, indie. There is ZERO naval combat in this game and there are NO plans to add it. A choice for sure but it is what it is. Sailing does feel kind of lifeless and flat. I can't disagree there. Wind only affects the ship in terms of speed. Ship is mostly a vehicle feeling vehicle. You pull the sail and it goes various speed forward based on length of sail. There's no real physics involved. Again and I will keep stressing this for the players who don't pay attention, this is not SoT or Windrose so do not go into this thinking you will get that type of experience here, you will not. Some people say the game is too easy. Put it on HARD or LEGENDARY. The default difficulty is meant to be cozy with a little bit of challenge. If you're looking for a cozy pirate game, with heavy emphasis on exploration and looting, this is it. Salt 2 is an entirely, unique game with its own mechanics and style and that is not going to appeal to everyone but the people it does appeal to, boy is it something special.

I was very close to giving up on the game in the first couple hours. I'm glad I stuck with it though. If you're thinking about buying this, keep in mind that it was only made by two people. It does not have naval combat, the sailing mechanics are very basic, and the enemy AI and combat isn't the greatest. That said, you won't find anything else like this game out there. The best part for me is that you can basically focus on whatever you feel like, whether it's exploring, questing, or just upgrading and decorating your ship. It's also very casual, which I found a bit off-putting at first but later came to appreciate. You can fast travel between certain islands you find (not all of them), teleport to your ship at any time, and there is no penalty for dying. So it's a great low-stress game you can pick up and put down at any time. As far as content goes, there's a lot more than I expected. There are several guilds each with their set of quests. These aren't just copy and paste content either. Every quest I've done so far has taken me to a unique hand-crafted dungeon. I still haven't gotten through all of them yet.

Some of the other geniuses who leave reviews don't read the game's description before buying. I bought the game SPECIFICALLY because there's no naval combat. There are TONS of games that provide this. I wanted one that didn't. Every other aspect of the game is what I was after. If you're wanting naval combat, play another game. Just don't buy one that specifically says it's not in there and then leave a review complaining about it. That makes you stupid. I play this with my 9yo and we have a blast exploring islands and hunting for loot. And the best part, the main reason I bought this, is we never get back to shore to find some moron sinking our ship while hurling racial slurs. The "mongos", as they like to call other people, are somewhere playing pocket pool as they write angry reviews. All the negative reviews for this game boil down to "don't like what I don't like", and it's okay to ignore those people. I give it a 10/10 for the same reason others give it 0/10. It's not SoT.

Let me preface by saying this, for a game made by 2 people it is freakin impressive. This is one of the few open world crafting games I really enjoyed playing. Granted the game does feels short of few features as a pirate game like canons on ship or ship combat in general. But it does makes up for it with sailing, cave dungeons, dynamic weather, crafting, treasure hunting even underwater, fishing, hunting animals, ship building, general combat, plethora of quests, boss fights and navigation mechanics etc. One gripe I have with the game but it could be related to my hardware as I play it on my laptop so the performance fluctuate from 19-30 fps throughout the day but at night or inside rooms and caves it doesn't, as much. But I think this can be addressed with the implementation of resolution scaling. Overall, it's a great adventure and has some of the best visuals I have seen in a game, out in the sea watching the sunset is a real treat. The soundtrack is also brilliant but as I said if the developers could add performance update this could be easily be but still is one of the best pirate and indie game on the market imho. P.S. After reading so many reviews on this game, I came to the conclusion labeling it as a pirate game doesn't do it any justice. A more fitting description would've been an exploration game set in the pirate era or as someone else pointed out, a pirate themed game.

Very simple and enjoyable game. I would like to see ship combat but for what it is, im having a good time. Honestly, it's a breath of fresh air that its not some kind of pvp game.
