July 2025
This game has been an unexpected hit for me. I was aware of it in the past, before the new engine upgrade/overhaul and gave it a pass. I recently decided to give it a go about a week ago and have been engrossed since then. This game provides such a solid foundation for expansion in the base game and with a developer focus on adding mod support that will greatly expand the game's possibilities (once people start making more mods and are able to tweak more things). This is most certainly a game for builders at the moment. If you enjoy, like I do, crafting intricate and unique buildings out of your resources as a relaxation hobby than you will find many hours of joy in this title. The building system is straightforward, but difficult to master. My first house was "minecraft style" (i.e. 1x1 block by block) and that is most certainly not the way to go - huge waste of resources. Once you familiarize yourself with the mechanics of manipulating blocks into any shape you want, the construction possibilities start to become endless. Once I played around with the block mechanics more I was able to very quickly build an outdoor workshop area for all of my crafting stations that was much more advanced than my original house. I have also torn down the first house and began construction on a much homier farmstead that will be complete with fireplaces on both the main and upper floor as well as dedicated rooms for cooking, dining, relaxing, storage, and sleeping. This game's building mechanics scratch an itch that is very difficult to satisfy, and I often find myself planning new projects and structures when I'm not playing and adding it to my mental "to-do" list. Crafting is also a strong point here. I enjoy a lot of the routine of crafting (placing individual iron ore into the smelter and watching them melt, grinding grains and cloth on the grinding wheel you have to push around yourself, etc.) My favorite by far, however, is the spinning wheel. It is the simplest, most mundane activity but I could spend hours watching that thing spin around and craft spool after spool of precious yarn. In fact, this game taught me how a spinning wheel actually works, as I had always seen them at pioneer villages and in antique stores and whatever, but never had more than a passing understanding as to what you were supposed to do with it or what it would produce. Thanks for teaching me something new, game. Animal husbandry, at the time of this review, is sadly missing. I know it is probably coming in the next update or two but I think for me that is the biggest thing I am missing. You are able to pick up chickens and rabbits and I was able to build a basic coop for them in a fenced-off enclosure. The chickens lay eggs and I the rabbits could be used as a future food source. Very much looking forward to raising all types of animals and for them to reproduce (sheep especially, as wool is hard to come by unless you know where the sheep are). Farming is there, but very basic. As of now, you can only gather certain plants with the sickle and will receive seeds for your efforts. I have not yet tried planting and growing yet to see how it works (still finishing that farmhouse, ya know) but that is my next project is to get a field up and running. There is not yet an option to gather other, more decorative plants (flowers, etc.) for beautifying your property - but I am sure its coming at some point. Mining is a fun time as well, and I really like how the voxel-based world has been implemented here. Mines feel organic, and when you start by just hacking into a stone wall in the side of the mountain you soon find yourself deep in your complex tunnels searching for ore. Fishing is the most recent addition to the game and has been fun. Great food source when you've settled on a lake like I have. Please, for the love of god, reduce the number of sticks you catch. My lake must be completely bare at the bottom by now but still the sticks haunt my dreams. All that being said, however, mods are kind of non-existent at the moment and what little mods there are can be found on the developer's website/forum. Additionally, googling questions about this game can get very confusing as the new version has created basically a whole new game, so many of the answers you will find pertain to the old version and don't apply to your problems. I have come across a lot of (presumably) confused Germans and so those posts weren't helpful to me either. If you have any questions you can always post on the discussions board for the game, or even ask me if you want - I'll try to help. If you're a builder and a crafter, pick it up! It has a friendly, cozy atmosphere to it and you can build whatever you can imagine (check out some of the multiplayer servers for things people have built - wowza). If you're someone who doesn't vibe with building and wants to build a crappy house and go kill a dragon, there is some of that here (no dragons, though). There are caves and some dungeons, and other biomes that offer different resources and more challenging predators, but I believe that there is more to be added to the game in the works if you are an avid adventurer. One thing, in closing, that I absolutely LOVE about this game is the number of settings available to the player. Want no predators? Fine. What only certain predators? Also fine. Want to turn off the spiders and scorpions? There is an easy option for that (thank you so, so very much devs). There are settings to change mountain height/development, ore abundance, vegetation and tree abundance, and more. That is probably the one thing I would ask of the devs in the future - please make everything a setting that can be changed so that people can continue to enjoy the game how they want to. I have seen some talk about food spoilage (fine, whatever, but as long as there are preservation mechanics included) as well as diet requirements for eating diverse foods for maximum effects (I personally hate this mechanic but I get some people like it). All I ask is that I can turn it off. In conclusion, if you like to build and build creatively, this game is a slam dunk. The negative reviews are often people who haven't put enough time in to figure out how to manipulate the game or aren't the right gamer for the type of content the game currently offers. Thanks devs for a great time so far and I will be following progress closely.

This is maybe the best unknown or underrated survival game EVER. The world is absolutely stunning, with wildlife that brings it to a living, immersive environment. The weather is very impactful and can be extreme or even deadly. It's very chill and relaxing (as long as a pack of wolves don't eat you!) and includes a massive building mechanic where we don't place prefabs or parts, we can custom make every piece down to the single brick or easily plunk down a simple base in short order. But mistakes or failing to plan can be devistating. The transition to the Unity engine brings this sleeper to my radar and I'm loving it I'm hopeful there will be enough attention to this game such that the Devs keep creating wonders to explore!

The TLDR: A modernized minecraft, well done. Needs some additional work but still one of the best open world survival crafting titles out there. As a game dev I have to say the underlying technology here is astounding. The polygonized voxel rendering is gorgeous, as is the world itself. Foliage, volumetric clouds, effects etc the rendering here exceeds many AAA studio efforts. The game also has perhaps the best building system I've seen, great crafting, and a generous library of assets to make and enjoy. Lots of quality of life additions for deep building, ways to save and reapply building blueprints, the works. Also kudos for a modding focus. Everything can be modded, setting up a server is easy and robust, multiplayer works great. Really the only problem I see here is the emphasis on "sandbox" play. Yes, it adds a certain "minecraft" aesthetic to the game, where you are left to determine your own gameplay etc. But minecraft also presents tempting goals to work towards, such as investigating ruins one can see in the distance. Here the experience is rather more one of being alone on a vast and gorgeous planet - there may be dangerous predators or even inhabitants but for the most part the feeling is one of aimlessness. Other downchecks: aluminum necessary to advance but often impossibly rare compared to iron. Need more minerals etc to make mining more compelling. Current procedural caves area boring network of tubes. So the core gameloop needs some more goals to help grab people's desire to return despite grind. And some of the UI and placement thinking is just too nonstandard. But the game itself is a thing of beauty, done better than most AAA studios can hope to achieve. And the game can be, with a little more fleshing out, as fun as minecraft while being graphically gorgeous. That's pretty "wow." My hat's off to the devs.

I've been following Rising World for a long time. Started playing on the Java version right about the time they made the switch to Unity. That took a lot longer than expected, but for anyone reading, this game is anything but abandoned. It continues to grow and the Unity version is now the premier game of the two version, both of which are available for one purchase. The developer is dedicated and continues to add new features to the game as quickly as he is able. There is still more to go, but the game, as it stands today, has a lot to offer. A few of the features: - Best construction system in the gaming world, bare none. When they say build anything, they mean it. - Massive endless world to explore with three region types available today and more to come. Each region is composes of many subregions that are each unique. - Great crafting system with a progression that will continue to evolve over time - Great community and online servers with massive worlds in development. Just some of what RW has to offer. There is more with even more in development. The downsides as of the date of the store page update to the Unity version, is that the crafting system is still in development and while it has everything needed to create infinitely, it does need some tweaking and more general recipes, and we're anxiously awaiting moveable objects such as trains and cars. The survival mode is still a bit weak as well, with endless food supplies, though that will change soon with the addition of food spoilage. We also need a lot more in the way of clothing and armor, and I'm still waiting for dungeons to crawl around in and sack like in the Java version. Everything I've just listed though is nearing completion in development. Very little requires new technology or heavy development now, they just need polish to release. Development is slow at times too, but updates are regular and each one is usually packed with additional components. Now that the Unity version has taken over as the prime advertised product, it will begin to grow in features and capabilities, and the developer is very consious of not breaking anything in existing worlds so that you are never forced to start over. He is also very active on the forums and extremely responsive to issues that come up and bugs are fixed very fast. Overall, RW is one of the best games out there, strictly my opinion. Been playing for years and will continue to play for years to come.
