May 2025
A outstanding combo system with significant depth for the genre. I had fun leveling up. Then, purchasing food and special items from the diffrent shops to fill in the various attributes, after leveling up. For a stronger, harder hitting fighter. Along with, buying all the additional attacks from the dojo's to perform more efficient and creative combos with the character. RCRU, is not too difficult of a side scrolling brawler. Especially, if you understand the game & system mechanics. Many people didn't understand them at all. Which is why other reviewers are negatively pointing out its difficulty. Citing, it is too challenging. So, in turn they struggled at every moment with every aspect of the game because of their lack of knowledge. Never finding the gameplay loop and fun of it all. Instead, being frustrated the entire time. What a misunderstood beat 'em up RCRU truly is. After completing RCRU, this early 90's influenced continuation of the original US NES release, is now on my all time beat em up list. Paul, is one of the most fun characters I have ever piloted in this genre. He played as well as controlled very solid on my Sanwa fight stick. Legitimately, being a walking one man army. Once you've completed his entire moveset, it's just like let's go! I literally played post game, just to aimlessly walk around performing stylish combos on the enemies. I had a satisfyingly great experience! Lastly, the visuals in this title are well animated. This is easily one of the best looking "River City" games. If not the best! The pixel art and character expression is absolute quality work and superbly done. A retro inspired delight. 4 player online play, is a plus. Intergrading where you left off in single player. Seemlessly, allowing you to play with friends. The characters, all play differently from one to another. Each needing to be leveled up and upgraded individually. Offering plenty of replayability and unique experiences every play through. Terrifically enjoyable on the Steam Deck. If you like beat 'em ups, this is a misunderstood, must play, gem!

The story is completely bizarre but at the same time it works since it follows the American continuity so it just feels right. Combat is AWESOME all the characters control super well and aside from some confusing inputs pulling off combos is tight and rewarding. Love this game!

It's the best beat'em up right now. It's not like using the franchise name and releasing another Beat'em up with 30-year-old mechanics. They actually improved it and added combos and fluid fighting mechanics. Unlike other “new” Beat'em up releases. I actually want to name names and curse them a lot but whatever. Definitely worth buying and playing with friends (Online, couch co-op etc.)

8/10 - Absolutely loved RCR back on the NES days and was glad to see a sequel that is true to the original just with better pixel art. The fact that the cast of playable characters all have individualized move sets is an awesome added touch. Looking forward to trying out other characters. My only complaint would be moving vertically feels slow since you cant sprint that way. It is a hard game at first, but once you get your rhythm going then things start becoming easier for a time.
