I never played this game before, I found out about it in 2025, and honestly, I am surprised and amazed. Very good feeling playing this, the controls are smooth, the animations serve their purpose and look cool. This game feels like it was ahead of it's time gameplay-wise. I didn't feel like I was playing an "old game" at all, the shooting is smooth, headshots and precision shots feel good, the weapons and emplacements feel good to use. I actually think this game didn't needed the Redux version, and honestly you should skip that and go straight for the original (this one).

Rogue Trooper, developed and published by Rebellion, is a third-person tactical shooter set in the gritty, war-torn universe of the classic British 2000 AD comic series of the same name. Originally released in 2006 and later remastered as Rogue Trooper Redux, the game brings to life the violent struggle on Nu-Earth—a chemically ravaged planet where genetically-engineered soldiers fight a never-ending war. The title follows the lone surviving Genetic Infantryman (GI), Rogue, who sets out on a personal mission for justice after being betrayed by his own commanding officers. This revenge-fueled narrative, bolstered by engaging mechanics and strong source material, makes Rogue Trooper a compelling and memorable experience, particularly for fans of comic-inspired sci-fi action. From a gameplay standpoint, Rogue Trooper combines third-person shooting with tactical and cover-based mechanics that, for its time, were innovative and well-executed. Players control Rogue, a super-soldier bred for war, enhanced to survive in the toxic atmosphere of Nu-Earth. What sets Rogue apart from typical protagonists isn’t just his genetic enhancements—it’s his sentient gear. His fallen squadmates, Helm, Gunnar, and Bagman, have their personalities digitally preserved in Rogue’s equipment: the helmet, gun, and backpack, respectively. This mechanic is more than narrative flair—it gives the player access to unique abilities such as automated turret fire, on-the-fly ammo crafting, and enemy hacking, all of which add layers of strategy to standard shootouts. The level design is mostly linear, with open areas that encourage tactical positioning and use of cover, but what truly elevates the combat is the synergy between Rogue and his bio-chip companions. Each encounter becomes a chance to utilize your tools creatively. Whether you're setting traps, creating decoys, crafting grenades, or calling in automated fire from Gunnar, there’s a welcome depth to what might otherwise have been standard firefights. The AI isn’t groundbreaking by today’s standards, but it’s aggressive and varied enough to keep you engaged throughout the campaign. There are also stealth elements sprinkled throughout the missions, giving players alternative ways to approach certain objectives, though the game leans more toward action than stealth overall. Visually, even in its original form, Rogue Trooper had a distinct aesthetic that captured the bleak, blue-toned atmosphere of Nu-Earth with surprising effectiveness. The Redux version updated textures, lighting, and models to meet modern expectations, but retained the original’s comic-book charm. Character models and animations are functional rather than flashy, but the environmental design helps immerse players in the constant state of warfare and desolation that defines the setting. The blue hues of Nu-Earth are iconic and used purposefully to evoke the toxic, alien nature of the world without becoming visually monotonous. Narratively, Rogue Trooper does a commendable job of adapting its source material. While it doesn’t delve deeply into complex character arcs or moral ambiguity, it offers a focused and personal revenge story that drives the action forward. Rogue himself is a stoic, no-nonsense figure, a perfect match for the war-hardened world he inhabits. The betrayal at the heart of the story gives the game emotional weight, and the ongoing banter with his fallen comrades—now part of his gear—adds both humor and camaraderie to an otherwise grim tale. The voice acting and writing are solid, managing to convey both gravitas and the darkly sardonic tone often found in the 2000 AD comics. The campaign is moderately lengthy, offering around 7 to 9 hours of content, depending on play style and difficulty. It’s a well-paced experience that rarely drags, with a satisfying mix of shootouts, set pieces, and light tactical puzzles. The game also includes additional challenge modes and multiplayer options—though these have become less populated over time—which give it some replay value beyond the core story. Despite its age, the Redux edition is a testament to the original game's thoughtful design, proving that good mechanics and a strong setting can stand the test of time. One of the game’s only real drawbacks is its adherence to older design philosophies that might feel dated to players accustomed to more dynamic cover systems or deeper customization. Movement can feel a bit stiff at times, and mission objectives are sometimes overly straightforward. However, these issues are minor in the grand scheme, and most players will be too absorbed in the combat and world-building to dwell on them. The game also doesn’t offer extensive exploration or branching narrative paths, but it doesn’t pretend to. It delivers a focused, action-packed experience, and it does so with confidence. In conclusion, Rogue Trooper is a standout example of how to adapt a cult comic series into an interactive format without losing its identity. Through smart mechanics, solid gunplay, and a memorable setting, the game creates an experience that is both entertaining and respectful to its roots. The integration of squad-based abilities via the bio-chip system still feels fresh, and the Redux version ensures that both new players and returning fans can appreciate the game in a more visually refined package. For those who enjoy tactical shooters with a twist, or simply want to step into the boots of a war-bred super soldier on a mission of vengeance, Rogue Trooper remains a rewarding journey through the chaos of Nu-Earth.
