Fun but each run ends too soon. You get a build going and the run's done. Feels like it should be twice as long

very unique and challenging game. The characters are all very different gameplay wise, meta unlocks make the game easier as expected - but you can win runs without these upgrades. (All the roguelikes that dont let you win runs without upgrades can suck a fat on) The dev worked tirelessly on the game for the past years and came up with loads of good content

Easy recommend as-is, even before the final 1.0 update. An unusual take on the roguelike genre, kind of like a deckbuilder, except in all the ways it isn't like a deckbuilder at all. Takes things in a completely new direction, which it explores to great depth with a host of unusual effects and conditions. The game makes a point of having all "modules" be impossible to use by themselves, which makes it all the sweeter when you manage to cobble together some overpowered engine from bits and pieces. It's hard to explain with words, but sometimes you use a Turbine to automatically charge up a boosted Condenser, so you can discharge it all at once on your delay-inducing gun on your other explorer and immediately use the delay-magnet to absorb it and turn it into massive damage on a boss, while the other explorer was doing some shenanigans by activating a bunch of powerful Plasma-consuming modules to one-shot the minions, and a Plasma-consumption sensor connected to the Plasma factory through a Coil to gain all that Plasma back with added interest, meaning you can buy-out every shop you come across. And the graphics and sound design make this whole thing feel as crazy, overengineered and broken as it felt in your brain while you were putting it together.

When I was playing Backpack Hero I thought "CR-8 is fun, I wish there was a whole game about designing circuits." Then I found Rogue Voltage. It's a roguelike battler with a large amount of logic puzzling. Understanding the order of operations for a Blaster is one thing, but time manipulation math is a beast. However, figuring out how to sequentially take out an enemy while negating all of their damage is a great feeling. The sounds and visuals are wonderful. Every module shakes and makes nice CHUNK and CRACKLE sounds when they activate. Watching your Rube Goldberg death device charge a 9 damage shot and obliterate an enemy tickles the Mad Engineer part of my brain. The RNG can be tough, but there are usually enough tools (like paint) to save a bad run. There are also times I feel like my build is finally coming together but I realize I'm already at endgame. Altogether it's a great game.
