If you liked Ultimate Admiral: Dreadnoughts for the naval action but thought it was silly there was never any coastline , nor any air power at all, nor any missiles or anything else, Rule the Waves 3 may be for you! It is, however, very much a 'spreadsheet simulator' kind of game. It's the brainchild and love's-labor of one person, and that one person frankly, desperately needs to hire a User Interface/User Experience person. It's very dense, like a fruitcake, so if you haven't got the patience to master a whole new piece of software, give RtW3 a miss. Or don't, I'm not your mother, but you'd be a hippocritapotamus to buy it and then complain about the UI being a hot dumpster fire when I've warned you. This is a game with which to live out your naval grand admiral dreams, everything from designing the botes to sailing them, not to give you a slick and wow experience.

It's a completely Niche game for a specific kind of person. If you watch Drachenfel, History of Everything, or Perun, you will enjoy this game. If you do not know who they are, you will not. (However if you are attracted to this game and do not know who they are, look them up.) The game is one step up from playing an Excel spreadsheet. Things are a bit obtuse and the AI control of battles could do with a lot of work, and Auto-resolve would be appreciated. Buuuuut, it's a very specific niche game that fits an itch that I didn't know I had, and once you get past some of the rather obtuse logic involved in the game, it just turns into something fantastic. Things will click into place more each time you play, understanding combat Divisions, ship design, changes that come from Radar, Aircraft and Missiles. Each time you master a new facet and the game just changes completely, you'll restart and find even more enjoyment from it. Also because you lost two wars and 7 Supercarriers to the French because you didn't understand how the hell Air Recon worked.

Look at a few screenshots of the game. If you don't recoil from them in horror, and are even mildly interested in past century naval warfare, you will like this game.

This game is an Excel spreadsheet, you should know that before spending money it. Having said that however there is no denying that the game is the most comprehensive early 20th century naval warfare simulation out there.
