Former submariner here, very entertaining with relatively easy control set. Has more of a bias toward action than real life, would prefer more development of the fire control problem and tactical positioning, but understand that most casual players probably wouldn't be patient enough for that. Highly reccomend dotmod, as it enhances the controls and makes game play less clunky (less switching of screens).
It's a lot of fun! A great belance of realism and a good gaming experience. Sensors and weaponry is just the right amount of complexity. Perhaps due to my background I came into it with a lot of knowledge about these things, but it wouldn't be hard for a novice to pick up in the way the game presents it. No performance issues. Runs very smooth. The sand box is great, with good scenario building capacity. Just wish you could add friendly surface units in the scenario editor. It's a great offline game too if you're without internet at any point.
if you've never played a realistic submarine simulator sort of game, cold waters is definitely the best one to start with in my opinion. it's realistic enough that learning about actual real life anti-submarine warfare will make you play better, but it's simple enough to control that you don't have to bother learning anything if you don't want to
I have beaten two of the three main story campaigns, and all of the 1984 period single missions, and I had fun doing so. But while I do recommend this as a good game, it is not for everyone. This is not a fast-paced arcade submarine game, you will need to read wiki pages. you will need to sit and wait while playing, even with the fast forward button. If you really like naval combat and want something tactical and realistic, this game is for you, and I hope you enjoy. Fun fact: the USS Seawolf cost 6 BILLION dollars to build. if you lose it, they will not give you another lol
