They made the clever choice of making the controls simple, but made sound propagation through water (the main factor influencing a submarine's ability to remain undetected) realistic. This means the game is reasonably easy to pick up and play, while allowing a very high skill ceiling, allowing you to get very good should you wish, and expertly carry out your missions. That being said, although what is here is great, and there is a decent amount of replayability and even a modding community, there is not that much content. It's clear just from the empty slots in the menu, and from the modelled areas of the global map that you can go to but where nothing happens, that they initially planned to make more campaigns, and possibly have more content in existing campaigns. The game has not been developed further since release and has effectively been abandoned. I would absolutely snap this up on sale, but I would not pay full price, especially considering its 9 years old now.

If you have liked any ww2 sub game. Get this on sale. Forget about vanilla. Use Epic mod or DotMot, I prefer the latter. Makes the controls better and adds allot of content, while also tweaking the core game a bit. The mods basically works like a "final patch", if you ask me, Epic has more content, while DotMod is more realistic with more focus on enemy tweaks and realism stuff. Do all the training missions, read the ingame manual, understand that avoiding getting detected is key, while dodging torps is a 5050 thing. Once you understand the physics of staying hidden, sonars, radars and weapons the frustration of dying gets allot lower because you understand that it was actually fair. Unlike ww2 games you have more wire guided torps in the missile age and that is where the fun is compared to ww2 sub games. You get allot more tactics you can use because torps can be guided after launch, enemies can detect launch, you can do L shape tactics with the torps to confuse the enemy on where you are and so on and because of this you can fight enemy subs just as well as surface ships. IF you do stealth well. When you do not, you can suddenly have a ship launch a cruise missile with a torpedo on and drop it close to your position and zero stress goes instantly too 100% stress. The challenge is fun. This game is sub focused and therefor has more sub features than their new game Sea Power, which has more limited sub control, while more focused on fleet command.

9 years later and it's still the best sub sim out there. Coupled with Epic Mod or DotMod, nothing else even comes close.

This game is as close as you can get to the old game via MicroProse called The Hunt for The Red October. That game was amazing and this game follows that to some degree. I have played a fair number of submarine simulation games and overall tactics wise and fun this one is the best. This is now an older game and I purchased it when it was new. With over 500 hours of time playing you will not be disapointed. It plays as an action game and strategy game at the same time. I just don't think you will be disappointed with this one.

The game is incredibly complex and you will have to do a lot of reading in the many tutorial missions, but once you can understand how the game works it becomes a lot of fun.
