Runaway: A Twist of Fate, developed by Pendulo Studios and published by Focus Entertainment, serves as both a conclusion to the Runaway trilogy and a tonal departure from its predecessors. From the opening moments, it announces its ambition with a dramatic hook: Brian Basco, the hero of earlier installments known for stumbling into trouble, is now framed for murder and presumed dead. Meanwhile, Gina Timmins receives a cryptic message hinting that Brian is still alive, launching a mystery that threads through psychiatric institutions, conspiracies, corruption, and hidden identities. The narrative leans far more heavily into darker, noir-styled tension than previous games in the series, yet it still retains Pendulo’s signature cartoon flair and humor, resulting in a distinctive but sometimes conflicting atmosphere. Pendulo’s visual storytelling is one of the game’s strongest assets. The cel-shaded character designs, lavishly detailed backgrounds, and polished cinematics create a vivid cartoon aesthetic that feels simultaneously playful and cinematic. Every location—from gloomy asylums to bustling city streets—reflects a strong artistic identity, helping anchor the story even when its twists become convoluted. Character animations are expressive and exaggerated in classic Pendulo fashion, which gives the cast a lively presence and smooths over some of the tonal mismatch between dramatic stakes and slapstick humor. The game’s production values clearly surpass those of the earlier entries, making this installment the most polished and visually cohesive of the trilogy. The point-and-click gameplay adheres closely to genre tradition. You gather items, combine them in unconventional ways, decode environmental clues, and navigate conversations that shape puzzle solutions. Pendulo introduces quality-of-life improvements absent from previous titles: hotspot highlighting minimizes pixel hunting, and double-click travel makes movement faster and less tedious. The alternating perspectives between Gina and Brian also provide a welcome sense of variety. Each chapter shifts not only the environment but also the tone of the puzzles, as Gina’s investigative approach contrasts with Brian’s more chaotic, unpredictable circumstances. This structural rhythm helps maintain momentum across the game’s lengthy narrative. However, despite mechanical improvements, the puzzle design remains uneven. Many puzzles are intuitive and satisfying, but others rely on obscure leaps in logic or item combinations that feel forced rather than cleverly designed. Traditional adventure-game frustrations surface in moments where the solution is technically reasonable but poorly signposted, prompting trial-and-error experimentation rather than thoughtful deduction. Some players will enjoy this classic design philosophy, while others may find it disruptive to the story’s pacing. When paired with lengthy dialogue segments filled with tangential jokes or drawn-out exchanges, the pacing can become inconsistent, oscillating between brisk narrative progression and slow, talk-heavy stretches. The game’s tone is perhaps its most divisive aspect. While the story aims for tension and emotional stakes, the writing frequently leans on caricatures, zany humor, and exaggerated scenarios reminiscent of animated sitcoms. This combination can be charming when it works, but it also undermines moments intended to feel serious or dramatic. Pendulo’s trademark humor—colorful, self-aware, sometimes awkwardly delivered—lands unevenly in the context of a plot involving murder accusations, mental institutions, and corruption. Fans of the earlier games may appreciate the continuity of comedic style, but newcomers might find the mixture of gravity and cartoonishness disorienting. Still, the game succeeds in providing closure for the trilogy. Long-standing mysteries resolve, character arcs find their endpoints, and the final chapters tie together themes of loyalty, identity, and survival. The ending feels thoughtfully crafted for players who have followed Brian and Gina’s story from the beginning, delivering the catharsis and emotional completion that the second game notably lacked. Even if some narrative elements are melodramatic or overcomplicated, the overall resolution feels confident and complete. Runaway: A Twist of Fate ultimately stands as a stylish and heartfelt finale that captures the spirit of Pendulo Studios’ adventure design—vibrant visuals, eccentric characters, traditional puzzles, and stories that blend intrigue with humor. While it struggles with tonal balance, pacing issues, and occasionally outdated mechanics, it remains a memorable and distinctive entry in the point-and-click genre. Those who appreciate classic adventure games, cinematic art direction, and quirky storytelling will find much to enjoy. Those seeking modern pacing or tightly crafted logic puzzles may find its flaws more noticeable. But as a closing chapter to a long-running adventure series, it succeeds in offering both spectacle and sentiment, making it a fitting farewell to Brian and Gina’s escapades. Rating: 8/10

Runaway: A Twist of Fate concludes Pendulo Studios’ charming adventure trilogy with a polished, globe-spanning point and click experience that blends suspense, humor and cinematic storytelling. Picking up after the cliffhangers of the previous entries, the game continues to follow Brian Basco and Gina Timmins as they unravel intricate conspiracies, encounter colorful characters and traverse a variety of meticulously crafted locations. The gameplay remains true to the series’ core: inventory driven puzzles, environmental interactions and logical deduction. While some puzzles challenge even seasoned adventure players, each one is logically consistent and rewards careful observation. The game encourages exploration and experimentation, with numerous hidden details and easter eggs that enrich both narrative and world-building. It strikes a careful balance between difficulty and accessibility, ensuring that frustration never overshadows enjoyment. Narratively, the game delivers a satisfying conclusion to the trilogy, blending intrigue, romance and absurd comedy. Dialogue remains witty and engaging, while the story’s pacing expertly balances suspenseful sequences with lighter, comedic moments. Graphically, it is a stunning evolution of the series’ hand drawn style. Backgrounds are richly detailed and atmospheric, while character animations are fluid and expressive, conveying humor, emotion and narrative nuance. The art direction, paired with dynamic lighting and cinematic scene composition, heightens the sense of adventure and scale, making each new environment memorable. The soundtrack complements the visuals and story perfectly, using thematic motifs and ambient cues to reinforce tension, humor and drama. Audio design plays an important role in puzzle-solving and narrative immersion, ensuring the player is fully engaged at every turn. Ultimately, Runaway: A Twist of Fate is a fitting, elegant finale to a beloved adventure series. It combines clever puzzles, engaging storytelling and vibrant artistry to create a memorable and rewarding experience.

What a great comeback! Honestly, after absolutely horrible 2nd game, I didn't expect that this serie may ever recover, but nevertheless, here we are. Developers admited that the 2nd game was bad, they knew why it was bad and they really did a damn good job to correct all these mistakes. I'd say, at some aspects they even overdid. It is especially noticeably how they adressed all the issues if you play this game right after the 2nd one (if you did not - do not ). How they mocked their own mistakes, how they adressed 'alien' and 'paranormal' stuff and especially how they handled here that ridiculous 'story' from the 2nd game. What I really like about this game, is that Gina is not a background furniture anymore, like in previous games. Now, she and Brian are working as a duo, each of them doing their best to reach the goal. Story is exactly how it should've been. It's bright and simple, with typical cartoon villains and without abnoxious characters. The game became shorter and easier than previous ones. That's my only critique here. Could be harder. But hey, at least now you don't have to waste time pixelhunting and guessing about weird gameplay triggers for each action. Thus, while you will spend less overall time here, true duration of this game is not much shorter than of previous games. AFAIK, this is the last game in the serie. But I would not mind to see more.

A fitting end for the Runaways trilogy. Not as famous as the classic Lucas Arts or Sierra point n'click adventure series but still a cult classic in the annals of the genre. I have found through experience that I away enjoyed playing games by Pendulo Studios. I appreciated the innovations and immersive narrative of Twist of Fate. There is even a build in hint system! The graphics and animation are excellent. The voice acting was good and the music was perfect. You don't have to play the other two games to enjoy this but I liked the call backs. Puzzles were logical except for a few that felt just tedious and some conversations dragged on way too long. The characterisation was well done and found the upbeat tone refreshing. I found the length of the game to be about right to what I prefer. This game is excellent and a must play.
