Running with Rifles is a standout indie title that blends the immediacy of a top-down shooter with the scale and strategic nuance of a full-scale military simulation. Developed by Osumia Games, it puts players in the role of a single soldier amidst sprawling, chaotic battlefields filled with dozens—sometimes hundreds—of AI and player-controlled troops. On the surface, the game’s minimalist, stylized visuals might suggest a light arcade experience, but underneath lies a surprisingly complex and immersive tactical war game. Combat is fast, lethal, and unforgiving. A single bullet can take you down, which makes the use of cover, flanking, and squad positioning absolutely essential. There’s a strong sense of vulnerability that forces players to think more like soldiers than lone heroes. The AI is impressively smart on both sides; enemies will attempt to suppress, flank, or overrun your position, while allied units react dynamically to the evolving battlefield. It's not uncommon to find yourself laying down suppressive fire while your AI teammates advance, or calling in a precise artillery strike to clear out a bottleneck. As you fight and complete objectives, you gain rank and resource points. Rank unlocks access to new weapons, gear, vehicles, and powerful support options like mortar strikes, paratrooper drops, or full-scale tank assaults. These elements allow you to gradually shift from a basic grunt to a battlefield commander with tools to turn the tide of war. The game’s progression system is tightly integrated into its tactical core—what you unlock isn’t just cosmetic, it directly impacts your influence on each mission. The campaign structure is non-linear and allows players to choose which fronts to push and where to dig in and defend. Each map operates as a living battlefield, with objectives changing hands and front lines shifting dynamically. Battles can last a long time, sometimes over an hour, as each side struggles to gain the upper hand through sheer persistence and tactical coordination. For players who prefer shorter sessions, skirmish or quick battle modes offer a more compact experience, but the full campaign is where the game truly shines. Despite its simple art style, the visual design is effective and functional. The minimalist look allows the game to run smoothly even with large numbers of active units, and it ensures that important battlefield information is always visible. A day-night cycle adds atmospheric variety and changes how missions unfold, especially during nighttime operations where visibility becomes a major factor. Sound design is similarly understated but immersive, with distant gunfire, explosions, and shouted commands creating an ambient sense of being in the middle of a real conflict. Multiplayer extends the experience even further, allowing players to join large co-op or PvP matches. Working together with human teammates to secure objectives, coordinate attacks, or defend chokepoints adds another layer of intensity and unpredictability. While the scale can make it easy to lose track of teammates, the game’s radio system and intuitive command options help maintain a sense of coordination. There's a genuine thrill to seeing a coordinated player push succeed under fire, or to hold a base against overwhelming odds with a mix of AI and human soldiers. However, the game does come with a learning curve. Tutorials are minimal, and many systems—such as radio commands, squad tactics, or advanced vehicle use—are left for players to discover or research through community guides. The pace can also be slow for those used to more immediate shooters; objectives take time to capture, and enemy reinforcements can make progress feel hard-earned. For some, this slow-burn approach is a strength, but it can be a hurdle for newcomers. Over the years, Running with Rifles has only improved with regular updates and high-quality DLCs that introduce historical campaigns and new factions. Content like the Pacific and Edelweiss expansions add a WWII flavor with unique units, weapons, and mechanics, further enriching the base experience without compromising the core gameplay. The developer has cultivated a loyal fanbase, and community modding support continues to inject variety and longevity into the game. In the end, Running with Rifles delivers an experience that is both grounded and thrilling. It’s a rare game where you feel like a small part of a much larger war effort, yet your individual actions can still shape the outcome. The blend of tactical depth, emergent AI behavior, and meaningful progression makes it one of the most underrated military strategy shooters on the platform. While it may require patience and a bit of learning, the payoff is a uniquely satisfying and long-lasting experience that continues to evolve. Rating: 8/10

I've enjoyed my time with this top-down shooter. It has its cartoony charm; the shooting feels great, requires some tactics, and the progression from being cannon fodder to commander is great. It has some issues, though—the game can get repetitive rather fast and the ability to change my loadout on the death screen would be very appreciated. My biggest issue, however, is that soldiers from your team don't hold your previously taken capture points and needing to secure them myself gets draining rather quickly.

What a fun game! Really good for a LAN party. Pro tip! Once you win your first battle in campaign mode, the campaign isnt done! You can "extract" from certain points on the map and win the whole game world!!!

Criminally underrated joy of a game. Great for people like me who want a good combined arms, large scale isometric shooter but are too scared to play Foxhole lol

Wouldn't have imagined this game to be so fun. Picked it up and the Edelweiss pack for 8.00 on sale. I have put in 13 hours already and it's a blast. Not overly complicated, doesn't require a ton of resources. Huge maps and very dynamic gameplay that ranges from just hustling to a new location to absolute chaos in battle. Reminds me of games were simpler but still a ton of fun.
