It's definitely not a Saints Row game. It feels empty and a bit soulless. You need the expansion pack for 100% completion, and even on sale, both cost around 4.49 (euro). That's not even worth it, tbh. The graphics are great, but that's about it. Don't let this be your first Saints Row game.
It's not as awful as people make it out, but it's also not as good as past Saints Row games. Whereas past Saints Row games kinda shoot you out of a cannon at the start of the game, this one gets off to such a slow, meandering, and aimless start that you're not sure who these characters are, what they actually want, what's standing in their way, why you should care, anything like that. The game is kinda just like "Here are four characters. You are one of them. Go get rent money." Things then unfold where you, in the course of trying to earn rent money, piss off every other gang in the world and have to form your own. This isn't really a spoiler, as it is extremely predictable. People say that the characters and writing in this game are terrible, and I'm not sure it's really that the characters are bad; it's just that nothing that the game does narratively or with its characters really feels earned. Every relationship or development is just kinda declared or brute forced without feeling like a natural result of anything. I'm not finding the game buggy or glitchy at all in my playthrough so far, but I can understand what people mean when they say it feels janky, because this game literally looks, feels, and plays extremely similar to Saints Row 3, which is more than fine in the year 2011, but for a game released in 2023, I can see why people would say it feels trashy. It does have some QoL improvements over past Saints Row games, such as better sorting of all of your purchased clothing items and allowing you to change your clothes at any time without having to return to a crib. But it also for some reason completely gets rid of QoL features that past saints row games had, such as the ability to save custom outfits, which is crazy, since they made creating custom outfits so much more complex, it's actually a huge pain to slowly build a new outfit every single time. They added some cool new stuff to the driving, such as the ability to do a side ram, which can send opposing cars flying off the road, sometimes exploding in a satisfying fashion. But they also made the driving worse in some ways, such as having a completely terrible and utterly bad drifting mechanic. This is sorta wild, because the past games had a hand brake that worked just fine, but in this game they seem to have tried to "fix" the drift by creating a sort of "drift for dummies", but it's actually quite bad. One of my biggest complaints honestly. When you hit the handbrake and try to drift, the game actually ADDS perpendicular momentum to your vehicle that was not there and could not---given the laws of physics---be there. This SHOVES your car around the corner like it has side thrusters, in a way that purely and simply does not make sense and does not feel good. It's one of the weirdest and most head-scratching things they did. Some people have said that the environment in this one is "empty" and "boring" and I'm not sure that's really the case. They've moved Saints Row out of its normal intensely urban environment into something that feels more flat and desert. There are just as many activity POIs on the map as in past games, and there are all kinds of fights you can get into if you're looking. The game just feels more flat and more brown than post SR games because... well... that's what that area of the world looks like! People have said the humor sucks in this one and is "cringey", and I don't really know. I don't think the humor in the past SR games was gut busting hilarious or anything. It was pretty juvenile and stupid a lot of the time. But there is something different in the delivery that's hard to explain. The past Saints Row games felt cheeky because that's just who they were, so it came across effortless. This game feels cheeky because it is TRYING to be cheeky, like you can feel it trying. Hard to explain, but that's the vibe you kinda get. I don't know if the failure is the writing, the delivery, the direction, or the execution. Maybe it varies. All that being said, you can't release GTA 6 and have it feel like a reskinned GTA 4. Likewise, if you're gonna reboot Saints Row in 2023, it probably shouldn't feel like a Saints Row 3 mod. But THAT being said, if you just like driving around a map, doing little activities and missions, buying clothes, acquiring guns, getting into huge shootouts because you left a bad yelp review at a rival gang's donut shop, well this game works fine enough. I don't know if I would recommend it for $60, but if you see it on sale for five or ten, it's a perfectly good way to waste time.
This just feels like the work of a student who's always aiming for a passing grade it has everything you’d expect but lacks any real insight or depth, coming across as a rushed job. Saints Row is honestly a mess. Who is the demographic for this? Am I just out of touch with whatever culture or age group this appeals to? Maybe I’m just getting old. It does have a surprisingly decent soundtrack, but having DMX tracks mixed in with the game’s tone just feels mismatched. Everything’s there on paper, but none of it really fits together. The mechanics are outright weird, as if they were thrown in without any real thought about how they’d function or mesh cohesively. Everything feels disjointed. And seriously a QTE prompt for explosive objects? A simple red outline or glow isn’t enough? That’s just outright insulting to players’ intelligence. On top of that, the characters aren’t likable or even hateable they’re just plain annoying. I stopped caring so much that I now browse online or do other tasks during cutscenes (since they keep playing even when you alt-tab). The gameplay, somehow, manages to be even worse. Side activities once a highlight of the series are now reduced to meaningless chores: leave a rating and get attacked by a gang, pick up drugs, take pictures, or, unbelievably, go dumpster diving. There’s no creativity or charm here, especially compared to the hilarious and memorable side missions in Saints Row 2, which still stand out as some of my favourite gaming moments. So why am I still recommending it? Honestly, if you can get it cheap, it’s still fun in a casual, turn your brain off kind of way. I’ve been rushing through the story and having fun with the missions each one at least feels different and occasionally delivers some entertaining, cinematic moments. It’s not all a dud. This isn’t Saints Row anymore, and it hasn’t been for a long time but whatever this version is, it’s at least worth a look when it’s on sale.
Just completed a full run. I started this journey in honor of IdolNinja. And I'm glad I did it. I'll keep this one short, there's plenty of more detailed reviews on this. The TLDR is that if you are a Saints 1 or Saints 2 purist, you won't enjoy this game. If you enjoyed Saints 3 and Saints 4 in any capacity, you'll find that you will find this game entertaining too. If you are on the fence but fit into the category of enjoying Saints 3 and Saints 4, have an open mind where you can find enjoyment in things and not immediately writing it off after disliking something in the game, then grab it on sale, and enjoy the ride.
