A super short visual novel (get it on sale) but was a pretty fun time, the world has a bunch of lore to it so it doesn't feel bare bones, but I was expecting it to be a lot longer

As far as world-building goes? This game is second to none. Every interaction, every scene reveals a new and incredible facet of a land scarred by ancient technology, dark spirits, and dire cataclysm. The world that we follow our protagonist through feels alive in a way that many triple A games can't match. I adored the story as well, with its odd twists and turns, it is on the shorter side, and there are four endings, plus an unfinished quartet of side stories that we may never get to see. But don't let that deter you from enjoying what is there already!

Having read some of the negative reviews before buying the game (heavily discounted, for what it's worth) citing the extensive lore/mythos/codex relative the short playtime, I got increasingly frustrated with those negative reviews as I read through Scarlet Scarf. I should note - it took me 2 hours to 100% the game and I probably would have been frustrated at that if I had bought it for full price, but coming at the game for its content There's two approaches to worldbuilding in fantasy - you can start with your story and make a world to fit it, or start with a world and tell a story from it. The former is more common - it's much easier, after all - but Scarlet Scarf takes the latter approach and I'm glad that it does. The story takes place in a world with offhand references to cities, countries, belief systems, and mythologies that are never mentioned more than in passing. The characters talk and think in patterns that aren't quite the same as our own - some may chalk this up to a rough translation but I think the writing really helps convey the sense that this is a different world. Not to get pretentious by dropping philosophy quotes in a steam review, but the below was used in a milo song and it's stuck with me (from the 1993 movie Wittgenstein): "If a lion could speak, we would not be able to understand what he said. ...Yes, yes, hum, we, we could get an interpreter... but what possible use would that be? To imagine a language is to imagine a form of life! It's what we do and who we are that gives meaning to our words. I can't understand a lion's language because I don't know what his world is like! How can I know the world a lion inhabits?!" It kept coming to mind while I was reading - even if it's only because of a rough translation, why should I assume that I would be able to perfectly understand people from another world and culture, even if they're speaking my language? Their references, thought patterns, internalized beliefs, etc are all going to be different from mine. Of /course/ it's not going to read like prose written by someone in my country, why would it? How could it? What I mean to say is that despite the short playtime, Scarlet Scarf really made me feel like I was in a different world with all the consequences that would come of it. The slice of the world we get to see is tantalizingly brief, but I have full confidence that there are countless stories going on outside the walls of Reustadt because of the care that was put in to developing it. Ultimately, I got this game on sale for $2 and it's an absolute steal at that price.

I don't even remember when and how I got this game, but well I played it. It is my second visual novel after Everlasting Summer and what can I say, the story is great, music is perfect for setting and atmosphere is dark. I recommend this game if you catch when there is discount and if you don't have anything to play.
