So here's the thing: I technically didn't play the game, because I watched a streamer play through all of it instead. I just saw the credits roll not even an hour ago, and I just had to buy it anyway and leave a review, because yes, this game really is THAT good. I'm a sensitive kinda guy, I love a good heartache story and all, but for some reason I've never been able to actually cry from being moved by one. I don't really think about it, some things just aren't meant to be and I was ready to appreciate the story all the same just like any other tearjerker I've liked before. Well I'll tell you what, this game actually pulled it off. The combination of the emotional depth it delves into as you unfold these people's lives, and the incredible soundtrack that elevates it all completely swept me off my feet. In fact, I have one of the tracks on loop in my ears as I'm writing this. Which brings me here now. I just couldn't step away from these streams without properly thanking the devs for making me "believe my tears into reality" haha. And now that I've gone and bought it, I suppose I might as well try to make my mom play it too, hopefully when a French translation eventually comes out.
Schrödinger's Call is a game about listening. About empathy. About the empathy found within lies. About forgetting. About loneliness. And it handles all of these themes on a truly remarkable level. Unfortunately, the game is not always the most efficient, as it tends to repeat itself quite often. Some scenes are presented to the player multiple times in short succession, almost as if the game does not trust them to remember something for more than a few minutes. There are also a few situations where the player has to answer questions — but they are so ridiculously easy that you would almost have to try to get them wrong. The game tells several short stories, all woven into a larger, interconnected narrative, with the protagonist Mary always forming an emotional bond with the people she speaks to. Every story is well-written and filled with likable characters. They are mostly tragic, but often come with a sense of reconciliation and are occasionally lightened up by humor. Even so, I still found myself with tears in my eyes at the end of every story, and the final resolution hit me especially hard. The stories are not the only thing that is well-written — the presentation of Schrödinger's Call is equally impressive. The sound design is perfectly tailored to each scene and conveys the intended atmosphere wonderfully. I especially enjoyed the voices of the characters: they are unintelligible and sound heavily compressed, yet they still convey the unique qualities and emotions of each voice. Visually, the game uses many effects to create a strong sense of otherworldliness. I particularly loved Mary's notes in her diary. Schrödinger's Call elegantly transfers a physical thought experiment into the human state of mind. It is a game full of empathy for its characters. It knows exactly how to hit the right emotional notes, both in its beautiful and its tragic moments. I enjoyed it immensely. But what did you actually hear on the other end of the line?
They put the "visual", in visual novel. First half of the game is not much else besides solid episodic stories accompanied by incredible visuals and music but then the second half starts getting into the grit of the story and is such a wonderful experience. You could be a cynic and criticize parts of the story that feel like they lack critical detail and whatnot but the whole narrative comes from the perspective of a young girl so that shouldn't be something to care that much about. These developers have no other games in their catalogue but my god if they ever make something again I will so be there. Like I said, they put the visual in visual novel and I can't stress that enough. The art and sound direction is genuinely such an incredible work of art and vision. Thank You, Mary.
A really great visual novel with some meager flaws. First, the art direction, the cutscenes and animations are extremely beautiful. Of course, the music is really well made too. Very emotional, very depressing; if you are a sentimental with social issues, this game will give you probably a hard time. Nonetheless, most of the chapters have great story telling. The flaws are firstly the repetition / exposition problem. I don't know, what it is, but sometimes the protagonist seems a little dense or the writer was way to afraid that the reader would forget some of the plotlines and plot direction. Which isn't complicated, to be honest here. But nonetheless the game forces you to read through several expositions of past dialogues and lore bits, that it stretched the playtime a bit to much. The second flaw was... one of the chapter's plottwist was... way to obvious. And then the game tried to mislead you with red herings that it really felt too on the nose. But other than that, it is a really great visual novel. I really enjoyed it. Art and music is so damn beautiful; not on a masterpiece level, but clearly a 8 out of 10.
