So here's the thing: I technically didn't play the game, because I watched a streamer play through all of it instead. I just saw the credits roll not even an hour ago, and I just had to buy it anyway and leave a review, because yes, this game really is THAT good. I'm a sensitive kinda guy, I love a good heartache story and all, but for some reason I've never been able to actually cry from being moved by one. I don't really think about it, some things just aren't meant to be and I was ready to appreciate the story all the same just like any other tearjerker I've liked before. Well I'll tell you what, this game actually pulled it off. The combination of the emotional depth it delves into as you unfold these people's lives, and the incredible soundtrack that elevates it all completely swept me off my feet. In fact, I have one of the tracks on loop in my ears as I'm writing this. Which brings me here now. I just couldn't step away from these streams without properly thanking the devs for making me "believe my tears into reality" haha. And now that I've gone and bought it, I suppose I might as well try to make my mom play it too, hopefully when a French translation eventually comes out.
Schrödinger's Call is a game about listening. About empathy. About the empathy found within lies. About forgetting. About loneliness. And it handles all of these themes on a truly remarkable level. Unfortunately, the game is not always the most efficient, as it tends to repeat itself quite often. Some scenes are presented to the player multiple times in short succession, almost as if the game does not trust them to remember something for more than a few minutes. There are also a few situations where the player has to answer questions — but they are so ridiculously easy that you would almost have to try to get them wrong. The game tells several short stories, all woven into a larger, interconnected narrative, with the protagonist Mary always forming an emotional bond with the people she speaks to. Every story is well-written and filled with likable characters. They are mostly tragic, but often come with a sense of reconciliation and are occasionally lightened up by humor. Even so, I still found myself with tears in my eyes at the end of every story, and the final resolution hit me especially hard. The stories are not the only thing that is well-written — the presentation of Schrödinger's Call is equally impressive. The sound design is perfectly tailored to each scene and conveys the intended atmosphere wonderfully. I especially enjoyed the voices of the characters: they are unintelligible and sound heavily compressed, yet they still convey the unique qualities and emotions of each voice. Visually, the game uses many effects to create a strong sense of otherworldliness. I particularly loved Mary's notes in her diary. Schrödinger's Call elegantly transfers a physical thought experiment into the human state of mind. It is a game full of empathy for its characters. It knows exactly how to hit the right emotional notes, both in its beautiful and its tragic moments. I enjoyed it immensely. But what did you actually hear on the other end of the line?
If you're a fan of Umineko or Fata Morgana, please play this game. The soundtrack is excellent, the story has unexpected twists and turns and made me cry several times. I'm a huge visual novel fan, and, outside of visuals, I think the soundtrack and story are the most major components of a good one. Not to spoil anything, but the game remembers particular parts of your choices and, at the end, it feels like it's a critical part of the gameplay. I finished it in about 7 hours, which was a good three-night gaming session for me. Excellent length for a VN fan who, like myself, has a job and stuff to do but wants to enjoy a heady, tragic story.
All I could say is... It's beautiful From the moment I tried the demo (chapter 1), I fell in love with the soundtracks, the artstyle, and the narrative. And I was right, through the next chapter till the end, I really enjoyed this game. The story is just beautiful, and carefully written. I don't know how to exactly put it with words, but this game will definitely has a place in my heart. It's not a long story, but each chapter was such an emotional roller-coaster, beautifully written, to convoy a pure, kind message to the reader. This is one of those visual novel you'd wish to forget about and wanted to feel it all over again like the first time you've read it. The soundtracks also really helps with the atmospheric and to build up the tension. So for anyone who read it and want to try this game, I really recommend you to use a headphone while playing the game. The puzzle, well, it's not really that outstanding. But that's because it was clearly made so the player doesn't really need to scratch their head over the mystery, but rather to feel and interact with the world themselves. The artwork, is also stunning. Maybe not for everyone, but I really love the hand-drawn child-like style with all the animals and symbolism. And once you've reach the conclusion part, you'll see that this is a perfect style for this story. Finally, for you at the end of the line, I want to say: Thank you for making this game with all your heart. I hope this story and its message also reach to those who need it. I bought the full game, and this is my review of Chapter 1. I’ll update the review again after I finish the whole game. This game immediately hooked me with its visuals, but that’s not even the best part. The story is incredibly well written, sad and mysterious at the same time. I absolutely love games like this.
