OK THIS IS WHAT SERIOUS SAM 4 SHOULD HAVE BEEN. PROS: Better optimized and more fun than SS4. You do not need Serious Sam 4 or any other game to play this. This is NOT a DLC but a stand alone game. Proper mix of enemy hordes in big areas with some fun secrets. Sadly its set in an alternate timeline between Sam leaving Siberia Oil Rig and meeting Brand & Ugh Zhan in main timeline. There are a couple of changed weapons and couple of amazing fun gadgets. There is a fight in tank, in a Mech and an epic fight in train stations. Who does not like train stations? Brand as final boss is great choice with a really tough end fight. The game is lot of fun. I enjoy playing SS4 & SM on unlimited ammo with unlimited gadgets and abusing them. Best is hoverscooter introduced here, you get that unlimited mode you need nothing else. Fastest way. The Sentry towers are a great entry to new enemy and tests you at start till you realize how to beat it. Some of the secrets are tributes to classic encounters. Set in classic fight rooms replaying memorable room fights from original games and HD remakes. Thats amazing idea. The whole Siberian country landscape is huge and you feel the snow. I had a blast playing it. CONS: Compulsary Survival Grind in achievements. There are 6 maps you need bronze in any 5 maps and a gold in remaining map. Whatever map works for you. Any map you can beat. There are Triple Trouble and Kleer Base copy maps. I imagine having 1 gold, 1 silver, 1 bronze should be enough test. The Kleer map remains as much a pain in ess like original TSEHD one. Most other players I know didnt have lags BUT I kept getting it this map making it a task. This map is either first attempt success or a hard grind till you beat it. I was tempted to negative review a Serious Sam game first time for the pain this map caused me. Beat it finally. Rest were quite easy. Still would not like any future SS game to have a gun on head for survival. Developers need start thinking more original maps than rehashing TSEHD maps again and again. I guess I am getting bad at this with age given I spent last week 30 hours on this map. One friend got it first try. Another over dozen tries in a night. BUT dont let that stop you having fun. If I beat it with lags you will too after some attempts. I am getting older for such demanding stuff on older PC builds. Link: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3603822607 However I would wait buy it at sale where highest has been maybe 60-65% discount. Or if not owning SS4, than together in a discount bundle pack. I did wait to buy this at last discount seeing it was not going lower and already had the SS4 game so the pack got a little more discount for this pushing it till almost 70%.

From fans with love I always treated Serious Sam franchise as this weird and wacky series of games that people give way too much credit due to nostalgia. I was never fond of it and every title I started began boring me after ~1 hour mark, resulting in a refund or abandonment. This changed with Siberian Mayhem. Not that long ago I seriously tried The First Encounter , which according to Steam reviews is the best title in the series. I was very disappointed. To not repeat my review on it I'll just say that game felt like an amalgamation of the worst game design decisions genre had to offer. Any known FPS at the time blew Serious Sam out of the water. And funny thing is, this remained a consistent theme. Most shooters of modern age are light years ahead of SS. So I decided to compare The very first encounter to the very last, in order to see if claims of series' stagnation were true. I understandably can't properly say if those claims were true due to not playing any other game properly. But I don't really feel like I need to, if this is what I'm getting in basically every game then I might as well play stuff that's worth it. One word. Modernization . That's what was missing. The whole gimmick of "lots of enemies on huge maps" needed capable hardware and technological advancements to shine. It still feels like a game made during early-mid 2000s but with very welcome and basically required QoL changes. And it's funny how this was made by people that just wanted to make a mod for SS4. Mod turned into proper collaboration that according to the community is better than everything Croteam did in every step of the way. Everything I complained about in The First Encounter was acknowledged, murdered, dismembered, burned and buried. · Locations are HUGE , beautiful, filled with small details, packed with funny secrets, unique side quests, engaging enemy encounters and constantly changing combat scenarios that keep you on your toes and thirsty for more. · All this goodness runs relatively smooth with respectably flexible graphical settings, fitting for both potatoes and millionaires with more than 8GB of ram, seriously, did you see prices recently? · Soundtrack is BANGING and doesn't sound like background noise from your average weather report on TV anymore. · Weather itself changes , so you no longer stare at the same scenery AND it has an effect on fights. · Sam is no longer a slow goober that awkwardly outwalks enemies, he can sprint, shoot while sprinting and doesn't have a pitiful jump that made me feel like he constantly skips leg day. And you can upgrade him too, with perks. Turns out if you make movement fast and progression tangible level of engagement skyrockets. · Talking about rockets , weapons have impact, devastating secondary firing modes and can be dual-wielded, so game doesn't hold back and throws A LOT at you. It really help that you can store power ups. Now if I see an army rushing towards me from the top of a mountain all I say is "Oh yeah, this is getting serious" while chugging rage serum, releasing my buddy drone and calling an airstrike while holding two miniguns. I don't hold S and M1 anymore, I strategically move around the arena, avoiding enemies and their projectiles, killing them in dozens at a time to create space, guts fly in every direction and blood colors the ground red. I guess I finally understand what Serious Sam is all about. One badass motherfucker against the world. It's huge, bombastic, addictive, not too long, tight, smooth, better than sex, but most importantly, it's very SERIOUS. I still think The First Encounter is terrible btw. I'll try BFE next ig.

A miniature version of the magnificent Serious Sam 4, but here we were pleased with the NG+ mode, and it's a pity that it hasn't been added to SS4 yet. One disadvantage is that interesting puzzles, some levels, and bosses are only found in additional quests, so if you're just following the main plot only, you might miss interesting content like "the two Giants Gnaars," or even plot points like Brand's audio recordings that reveal the plot. But otherwise, the same pleasant vanilla gameplay, where you just shoot enemies with a rocket launcher or a minigun to cool music, instead of juggling weapons and puzzling over overloaded combat mechanics while constantly experiencing a shortage of ammo.

Fun game! > If playing with friends < But still, I'd prefer the OG "The First Encounter" over this one. Croteam went try-hard mode with this one, way too many things and kinda felt empty in some places. Devs, please go back to the ANCIENT EGYPT PYRAMIDS LIKE IN THE PAST. I don't want futuristic stuff with Serious Sam.
