The story goes on .... ... in Shenmue 4 coming 2048 or NEVER ! Suzuki's ego is so big he cant even finish this story, originally he wanted to make 8 games, now he thinks he can do it in 5. Breakdown of the Mismanagement of the franchise: Sega gives Yu Suzuki 90 million dollars They start developing Shenmue on the Sega Saturn The Saturn is under powered for the 'vision' that Suzuki san has. They bin the Saturn development and make Shenmue for the pretty powerful 'Dreamcast' (better graphics than the PS2) In Dec 1999 Shenmue blows everyone away for it's futuristic 'ahead of its time' like RPG exploration elements. Shenmue 2 is delayed and eventually released on the Dreamcast but only with Japanese voices. The Dreamcast dies due to lack of sales and lack of DVD player. Eventually Shenmue 2 Is released on the Original Xbox but they dont release the original Shenmue, instead it just contains a 'Movie catch up DVD' (not really winning new fans to the franchise. Instead of starting work on Shenmue 3, Suzuki or Sega think that making an Online Multiplayer game would be a good idea and the last of the Shenmue cash and goodwill is sunk into that which is eventually cancelled. In 2015 because publishers have SO little faith in Yu Suzuki he announces a kickstarter to develop Shenmue 3. The Fans are Ecstatic "We Finally Get an Ending to the story, wow never thought we'd see the day !!" In 2018 Shenmue 1&2 are FINALLY released on PC and Consoles, HOWEVER most people curious about playing these unique games have LONG since downloaded emulators and ROMs to play it , so they have lost a revenue stream that could have funded Shenmue 3 Shenmue 3 finally comes out , it has all the mechanics that made the originals great but now they are HORRIBLY dated, the way you talk to characters, there's no dialogue tree, the CONSTANT fading in and out, its just slow and boring. So it hasnt blown anyone away and the fact that we are going to need a Shenmue 4 and probably 5 to get some sort of ending is unlikely at this point. Shenmue 3 doesn't progress the plot at all.. its just a long rescue mission, there is no dialogue with Lan Di and all of the 'revelations' in this story we already knew from Shenmue 2 2022 'Shenmue the Anime' is released ... great at least the story can play out in animation form NOPE , cancelled, it tried to translate the detective nature of the first game into something coherent , nope it was janky and boring. THE END: So there you have it they tried over and over again but fumbled every time all of the detail is in Shenmue 3 its very nice to look at, 3D artists have spent ages creating TONS of useless objects to buy and sell and I would have been perfectly happy (happier in fact) if it looked like the original Shenmue 1 &2 (but with more processing power to expand on) Yu should have either kept it idential to the originals OR added modern like gameplay to make things flow better, Ultimately the Shenmue games are about , ask this person, then ask this person, then ask this person etc, there's no real detective work to be done. Oh and the end of Shenmue 2 shows a MAGICAL SWORD.. which we don't talk about in Shenmue 3, the promo video's for Shenmue Online imply that Shenhua has some magical ability and the 'prophecy' itself speaks that Lan Di will unleash some sort of magical dragon and phoenix with purple wings blah blah blah. AND FINALLY: I am one of the biggest Shenmue fans out there, I was there on day one with my Dreamcast utterly blown away by Shenmue 1 , less impressed with Shenmue 2 and UTTERLY bored with Shenmue 3 and the real problem is the Story is Stupid , Ryo as a protagonist is a terrible IGNORANT person, every Elder he meets tells him to stop and that his path will lead to ruin and he constantly gets his ass kicked by old people and random thugs, he will never beat Lan Di and frankly I hope he doesnt, Lan Di wanted revenge for Ryo's father killing his father and now Ryo wants 'his' revenge... who cares its a story we've seen a billion times , Lan Di has a scar on his cheek and Ryo has a plaster on his .. oh my is Ryo turning into the bad guy? will he see himself in the mirror and see what revenge has done to him? .. I don't care .. I just don't care anymore

A beautiful great game. I highly recommend it to anyone who has enjoyed Shenmue I and Shenmue II. It is important to note: This is a 'shorter' game than Shenmue I & II, as it covers only one chapter of storyline. There is also a lot of optional grinding, but it is mostly optional so you can skip it. There is a newgame + mode, so if you finish, you can carry over most of what you earned (skills, mastery, money, etc.) I recommend this highly!

I do not understand what anyone's problem with this game is. After years of listening to people tear it apart I expected a complete disaster. But when I finally played it I was surprised to find a completely consistent and authentic Shenmue 3 experience. It feels every bit like a natural continuation of the series, the official next chapter, the sequel we never got, picking up exactly where Shenmue 2 left off and carrying forward the narrative and game design elements of the first two games. I replayed the remasters immediately before this game and was not able to recapture the sense of joy I had exploring those games back when they were first released, but I was surprised to find it here. The slow peaceful pace, the well crafted environment, the introspective character growth. I understand if someone doesn't like Shenmue. These games are not for everyone. What I don't understand is anyone thinking Shenmue 1 and 2 are the greatest games of all time but then thinking this game is terrible. They are the same games. Shenmue 3 so perfectly recreates the souls of Shenmue 1 and 2 while, honestly, improving on them in every single way. From the visuals to the voice acting to the pacing and moment to moment gameplay. It's far less clunky to control. It's far less tedious progress through. Almost every aspect of the design has received quality of life improvements. Character designs are as varied while being far more detailed, and the game's architecture maintains the simulated game world design of the originals. Even the fighting system is not the train wreck I was led to believe. It's not great, but honestly, neither was the butchered, button mashing, unresponsive shell of the Virtua Fighting system found in Shenmue 1 and 2. At least now I can target specific enemies. Based on what others have said, I was not expecting this game to recreate the Shenmue tone and aesthetic. I was not expecting it to move the narrative forward. I was not expecting this game to have a climax or a final boss. And based on what others have said (spoilers), I certainly was not expecting to trade blows with Lan Di at the end of this game. None of these things ended up being true. Do not believe any of them. And I really was not expecting the gaming community and influencers to so grossly misrepresent this game that it would irreparably damage their credibility and my perception of them. Worst of all, these misrepresentations have likely impacted the chances of the series continuing, which is one of the worst injustices that could have possibly resulted from this entire situation. So the Shenmue curse continues. This beautiful game series continues to be misunderstood and maligned. I supposed I should be used to it by now. Regardless, thank you to the people created all these games. You do not deserve the hate that has been directed toward you. A few minor complaints I want to add. The arcades in this game are barren, consisting of multiple instances of the exact same Whack-A-Mole or boring QTE games when they should be a celebration of the arcade scene of the time period and Sega's history. The food system isn't a problem once you earn some money, but until that point it's stressful and obstructive, and there's no doubt the game would be better without it. Finally, the way the side quests are architected make them sometimes impossible to find and engage with. Many of them open for a very short period of time making them easy to miss. Other than these nits, I didn't find any other aspect of this game to be out of line with the Shenmue series in general. I didn't mind grinding my martial arts skills. This whole series is about Ryo developing and maturing as a martial artist. I didn't mind grinding for money either. Both Shenmue 1 and 2 did this and there's so many more ways to earn money this time. I didn't even mind catching chickens. You spend far less time doing this than you do carrying books in Shenmue 2, and it's far less tedious. If you like Shenmue, don't listen to non-Shenmue players about this game. They either don't get it and never have, or they played the old games so long ago they don't remember what those games are like or they have been conditioned to expect a different kind of game over the last 2 decades. This game is Shenmue 3, and it's amazing.
