I owned the original DVD release version of this game. I played it a lot back then. Even nowadays, every few years, I come back to it and enjoy another round. I can safely say, that for me this game has stood the test of time, with one small caveat: The standard maps are quite boring. When I play nowadays, I always play a user made map called "BC Gold". It's about the gold rush in British Columbia. You can get it from here: https://smrsimple.com/2009/06/bc-gold/ One issue with the game is that getting to run properly on newer Windows versions is problematic and needs some tweaking. For this reason, I was delighted to find out that under Linux the Steam version combined with the Steam provided Wine/Proton works out of the box. I have yet to find a single bug caused by this setup. Getting my favorite map to load needed a bit of trial and error because all guides assume that one runs Windows and therefore describe where the files have to be placed under Windows. Under Linux the location is for me "~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/7600/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/Documents/My Games/Sid Meier's Railroads/UserMaps/". This directory should already exist. If you cannot find it, read the paragraph below. Download the zip file from the link above and unpack it's content into this directory and enjoy the map. It is possible that when Steam updates Wine/Proton that the path changes. If the above path does not work for you, try the following: Start a game with any map. Save the game. Give your save file a very memorable name (for example "foobar123") and place it in the default location. Next, search your "~/.local/share/Steam/" folder for "foobar123". Wherever this save file ends up is right next to the "UserMaps" directory into which you have to place the map.

from back when games were actually difficult. Greatest economy simulator of our time. 5 Stars. Wish our society wasnt addicted to instant gratification so games like this could still get developed .

At this point, Sid Meier's Railroads is a casual game for me. When bored or when I need to silence my brain for a bit, I fire up the French scenario (which is the easiest) and play with a random city and geography layout. I don't even exit out of the game on one of my computers, which accounts for the high play time.

The link below fixes 98% of all crashes. It looks super complicated, but it's very easy. Just follow the TL;DR { you don't even need to look at the screenshots }. Without this fix, he game crashes a lot! { like every couple of minutes sometimes. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1349679487

Would only recommend to advanced users as you will have to manually patch the game in order to avoid crashes every 5 minutes. Great game though and one of the first I have a memory of playing as a kid.
