Possibly the greatest city builder ever made, very hard to find a similar sim game today with such pretty visuals and details. It is IMPERATIVE that you download the community patches to make it run fine, since this was made for 2003 computers. If you don't do it, it will crash every x minutes want it or not, this is unavoidable! You also have to be patient and consistent building cities of course, and use the whole neighbor dynamic to have good growth and skyscrapers easier. With the patches and mods like NAM, this game won't ever crash or give you any headaches AT ALL! Many people complain about this in the reviews and it's easy to fix, plenty of guides and simple tutorials on how to do this (on YT: Rob's Red Hot Spot and Ulisse Wolf have the best guides). The community for this game is very much still alive and there's HUGE amounts of content you can download. Check out Simtropolis and its Reddit.
To get this game to work, including high resolution, high FPS, and AUTOSAVE: - go to https://community.simtropolis.com/forums/topic/762953-performance-and-graphics-list-index-of-all-critical-mods-to-install/ - install all critical mods, from top to bottom. Take your time, read the readme files or the explanation on the webpage. It will take you like 20 minutes in total, but it should work and make the game better than ever - if you have set the sc4.exe to run in compatibility mode or in administrator mode, turn this off, because it will interfere with the mods. If you don't have a clue what I'm talking about, you should be fine. SimCity 4 is known as the best of the series, and I agree. Pros: + Zen-like city building gameplay, as simple or complex as you make it. No hand-holding past the optional tutorials, along with optional advisors on your side + Has charm, humor and lots of space to build a large array of different buildings and utilities + Great soundtrack + Decent visuals. Aged well too + You can manually drive/fly around your city in vehicles, and even talk to Sims via mic + No modern or scummy sales tactics + No unnecessarily high graphic fidelity and budget restraints on the size of your maps and city + Does not require EA app, account or always-online connectivity Cons: - No hd resolution settings - Will crash every so often, even on high end hardware. Save often Note: Add the following to your game's launch options in its properties: -intro:off -CPUCount:1 -CustomResolution:enabled -r1920x1080x32 The first skips the loud intro, the second stops crashes, the third and fourth allow custom resolution (change the forth to your own resolution. Keep x32 as the color depth. In conclusion, $20 is a bit steep considering its age, but it is well worth it on sale.
