I used to believe the original SimplePlanes was too good for a sequel, but that changed immediately when I saw the announcement trailer for SP2 almost exactly two years ago. Ever since, I have been eagerly following the progress of this game. During the demos, I played nearly 140 hours in total, and one thing I noticed how the performance of the game improved with each demo that was released. I have to say, on a MacBook with bare minimum hardware requirements, the game runs very well with medium quality settings, and it only really lags when everyone else is experiencing lag in a multiplayer server for one reason or another (usually because someone loads a build with 1000+ parts). The fuselage blocks in SP1 were already incredibly versatile, and yet somehow, the new blocks in SP2 are even more so. Wings and multiple engines are now also very flexible to suit different needs. Then there's the paint tool, with several types of textures. I honestly could go on about the designer, but I would be here for a week if I did. The flight scene is fantastic, with the vast land area and its countless cool features to explore. Some methods to reduce device workload are evident, like how when restarting, only your build restarts, instead of the entire scene. Other methods happen in the background, but still make a difference. Jundroo have done a great job to make sure that even on devices with minimum hardware requirements, SP2 can still run well. As for the game map itself, the variety of aerodromes is fantastic, the terrain features are very much worth exploring, and on the racetrack, both straight-line performance and handling for cars can be tested. There are some bug that need fixing, but nothing too difficult I would assume. After all, the game is in Early Access, so it can be excused. Would I recommend this game? Hell yes! In fact, despite already having a flight controller, I bought a sim wheel and pedals just for driving cars in this game, and if that's not serious commitment to a game, then nothing is. This game may be called SimplePlanes 2, but it is one of the ultimate sandbox simulators.

I really loved SP1 and came into SP2 with high expectations. While the game has huge potential with improved graphics, physics, and multiplayer, there are still some frustrating limitations in its current (Early Access) state: The 500-part limit in multiplayer makes it impossible to import many of my favorite SP1 builds (e.g. my 588-part craft). Missing features like dogfights and races that were in SP1. No controller support and no in-game XML editing yet, which reduces creative freedom. The UI (especially loading screens and icons) feels like it could use more polish. I know it's Early Access, so I'm hopeful future updates will bring back the depth and freedom that made SP1 so special. Looking forward to seeing how the game evolves!

I am so so utterly charmed by this game. It's incredibly lovely. It's gorgeous, lovingly well made, immensely fun to fly your builds in, runs well on the steamdeck even in multiplayer, and is pure joy to explore and do sandboxxy things in. The clouds and waves effect over water are such a great touch. The sense of scale is absolutely perfect. And the details of the environment and airports is incredible! The customizability offered to most parts is a vast improvement over its precursor, and the realism behind how they all work has me inadvertently learning quite a bit more than I thought I already knew on what it takes to actually make an aircraft fly. I actually have to optimize things here! The fact that looking up propeller specs and aircraft airfoil diagrams online actually yields good results in game and helps me properly optimize my builds shows the level of meticulous research that went into making the game as accurate to life as possible. I genuinely cannot wait to see how this game progresses during this early access, the future is very bright for SP2! Please keep up the stunning work, Jundroo! 💞
