In its current state, the base game easily delivers around 400 hours of pure enjoyment. However, the modding community unlocks literally thousands of hours of extra playtime (some people have tens of thousands). I have 2,708 hours so far, and the game still feels as fresh and exciting as day one. For almost 2 years now on our dedicated server, we run a model(ish!) of the solar system where it takes a ship ~14 real-life days to travel the diameter of the solar system and we so far we have only conquered the Earth, Moon and Mars. No matter how you want to play this game, there are the community and tools to make it happen.
Disclaimer no honestly I don't have 3,846 hours in SE a lot of those are mod managing, loading, and passing out after too many drinks. SE I have owned since 2015 and while it had its rough areas growing up here it is. So heres the bottom line yes I recommend it if you want a game where it feels like anything is possible. Also I highly recommend viewing the workshop at times several actually the devs made mods part of the base game. Great community feedback in my opinion. Now if you want a pretty version of the game SE 2 but note its in early development. Q&A Is this a game you can get sucked into? Yes for me I have to uninstall every so often and touch grass. Do you need to use the steam workshop for best experience? No but you might be surprised what the folks in our modding community can do. Do you need the DLC? Honestly no, not at first or ever. Its only if you want different versions of the same blocks for the most part and want to support the devs more.
