got the game for around $3. The game itself is good, just don't expect Black Flag-like gameplay. Lower your expectations and just treat it as a simple pirate game, then you'll enjoy it.

I'm going to write a review coming from what is likely a unique perspective. I really like and am interested in naval warfare. I grew up in a landlocked desert the thought of sea-going vessels (And especially submarines) was as interesting as visiting space to me. I also love flight simulators. I play a lot of naval simulations such as Sea Power, Sailwind, Modern Naval Warfare (Just released in a rough beta), Uboat, Cold Waters, etc. Real nerdy stuff. If this game WAS AC Black Flag I would likely not like it as much do to a bi-focus on Third-person action and Naval combat. I typically rarely buy Ubisoft games because they tend to be too formulaic and the amount of barf they put on the screen should have died out a decade ago. I knew this one was a laughing stock of the industry due to the "AAAA" presser. Also the 15 year development hell or whatever. It's been an interesting game to dive down the rabbit hole regarding mismanagement and a lack of clear direction during it's development. BUT. I am having an absolute blast. While of course arcadey, there's some attention to the ship designs and minor details that make me smile. I love how the crew positions the sails somewhat accurately to apparent wind. I love that apparent wind is modeled. I love how the ship designs artistically mirror their real life counterparts. There's just a smidge of historical detail here and there that makes me grin. I of course wish there was a more realistic sailing "mode" that made your ships perform more like they do in Sailwind where you could actually get in irons if you weren't careful, etc. I don't think that would appeal to a wide audience though kinda like Sim mode in Warthunder is fairly dead. It's kind of like playing Nuclear Option vs. DCS. As a simulation fan I can love and appreciate Nuclear Option despite it being fairly "Simcade", DCS is where I go for simulation though. Also, regarding the Ubisoft HUD barf I can really tone it down. I turned the Interface option to "Immersive" and turned off the damage numbers and it's a lot better. Can't really turn off much more without hampering myself due to RPG mechanics but that's okay. Also, I have 80 hours in and I'm still finding new stuff to do. I haven't really done a ton of research on the game so many of the activities I've been doing may be outdated or unprofitable. That's okay though because I just love sailing and combat in this game. The game would be even better if I never had to actually set foot and run around with my goofy character. Again, I think that would not appeal to a wider audience though. Also, there would be nowhere to show off the cool clothes you worked hard for. So, from a fresh perspective coming from a guy that simply likes boats. 9/10 for what it is and how it handles sailing and combat. My perspective as a Naval Game fan is that this is pretty awesome. Edit: For all of you joining the DMC you should learn more about the kingdom of Belgium and the Dutch East India company. I will happily join the French (Although fairly awful themselves at times), and slaughter every Dutch ship I see with a shimmer in my eye in hopes that in the Skull and Bones universe I can prevent the atrocities that lead to King Leopold II's reign (Screw him with a chainsaw). And yes, I pointed out I'm a nerd at the beginning of this review.

Look, it’s not Black Flag, so don’t expect a full-on pirate fantasy. It’s missing a bunch of pirate-y stuff, sure. But if you just want a chill open-world naval game where you sail around, blow up ships, and vibe, it’s actually pretty fun. And honestly, if you snag it on discount, the price makes it totally worth it.

ok. so..... I KNOW the publicity this game got. I KNOW the community jumped all over the hate wagon (I was one of them). The development of this game was a crazy roller coaster and I always said they were crazy to assume AAAA status and the amount they charge at full price. All that being said.....this game is good. I bought it for pretty dang cheap because I refused to pay full price for it, but no that I've been nothing but a pirate for 4 or 5 days straight, I am here to tell you this game has so much to do. My quest log has never been empty, I haven't explored everything yet, I haven't scratched the surface on ships, I'm fighting insane flying dragons and stuff, the community has been nothing but helpful, and I keep finding new ways to play or things to explore. I always say 1 dollar for an hour of gameplay is what I want to spend on a title, and I'm well past what I paid. Kudos to Ubisoft for still creating content for this SOLID game that, let's be honest, I didn't see making it for a year because of all the negativity surrounding it.
