I fu-cking love Sea of Thieves. But this adoration comes with a huge caveat: Only when I play it with my friends. Playing this game with a full galleon of my favourite people in a Discord call together is some of the most fun I've EVER had in a videogame and I think those moments are genuinely unmatched. So much so that I have 100 hours in this game and maybe 5 of them were just me on my own. So much so that I made TWO hours of YouTube videos of just me and my friends messing around in the game and accomplishing nothing specific. We played so much of this game we have developed specific terminology to describe things in game and our own methodology to completing tasks and farming resources. I genuinely adore this game so much and yet at 112GBs of size I just cannot justify reinstalling this game when I can't guarantee that I'll be able to get everyone on board (haha get it?) in a world where Sea of Thieves literally has a paid battlepass and seasonal challenges in a game that costs 40 f-ucking Great British Pounds. I love so much about this game, if you are in a group of good friends just looking to mess around and maybe sink a few noobs but at the same time, the rampant and blatant cheaters, absolutely no-life sweats that take you down in 4 seconds flat, and again, incredibly predatory monetisation is very off-putting. I give this game so many passes but new content recently has been so sparse and flavourless that it really is hard to endorse as a returning player. I have marked this game as recommended but please Rare, Microsoft, whoever is at the helm (heheh GET IT GET IT?) please sort out the constant teleporting pirate ninjas and subpar updates.

Used to play this game a hell of a lot on xbox before it came to steam, I can definitely feel the change in the times. For TLDRs sake, if you're looking for a game about managing your own ship with total freedom in what you want to do that session with said ship, you've found it hands down. If you're looking to meet other pirates and plunder things together... run. Starting with the pros, the game looks stylistically beautiful. Listening to the waves on the bow of your ship really gets you attached to it all. The freedom each voyage is quite nice, hunting megaladons one session then grabbing the wrong type of animal to deliver to a merchant that thought you had reading comprehension. Its fantastic The cons. Biggest one hands down is the social interaction with other pirates. Earlier I mentioned change in the times. In its early and mid days, you'd meet other sailors, form an alliance, maybe play some instruments before dispersing onto the waves like drunk bacteria. Now? Every. Single. Ship. I have tried to grab that megaphone and say "hello!" instantly thinks im a Category 5 threat that needs instant destruction. So I thought "alright, it's probably going to be awful but lets try open-crew." Silent crew members staring at you, doing nothing for a while and quiting like they were forced to be there on a parol test. Its a great pirate game, full of pirate stuff to pirate. But the only pirates left are the ones that no one wants to be around.

If you’re feeling that pang of nostalgia “the old days with friends” this game really scratches that itch. The unplanned moments, the shared laughter when someone misreads a map, the scramble to plug holes mid-storm… these are the moments you remember, not the grind. "10% of this game is sailing… the other 90% is screaming at skeletons." 11/10 <3.
